this guy was so talented that despite the fact he was short, fat and bald...he was still the biggest rock star in the world in 1974...and back in 1974 you had to look like a rock God...like robert plant, roger daltrey, mccartney..with long flowing hair and good looks...
but not elton...he was a little toad with soccer-ball sized hemorroids from getting corn-holed 24/7....
lol him and his crazy glasses (: nice video thanks for filming!! be sure to check out my cover of bennie and the jets on my channel if you ever get the chance
I SAW ELTON LIVE IN VANCOUVER , BACK IN HIS SMASH THE GUITAR AT THE END OF HIS SHOW DAYS ..... Would have been early 70's I 'm thinking . Any idea what year that would have been ? Thanks for posting . KC
I was there. In fact I am right down the front so had a perfect view when Rod came on. Rod did three numbers, I think Angel, Oh Not Not My baby, Sweet Little Rock and roller. Elton debuted his cover of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds at this gig too.
The GBYR version was studio recorded. The live effect was a delay from a 70's Watkins Copycat delay unit, and the audience/applause effect was stock audio from a non-Elton concert. Hope this helps :-D
does anyone know where the version on GYBR came from??
was it actually live or just made to 'sound live' in the studio...I think thats the best version out of all the ones I've heard. please help youtubers!
In an interview (you can probably google it) Sir Elton talked about how the LP version Benny and the Jets was cut to sound live with dubbed in cheers. I can't recall if the crowd was from one of his shows or just stock audio. Anyway, it seemed like the production of the original 'Benny' track was very much a slick, layered studio effort. Changes NOTHING for me.
@mlrose - thanks for that, I kinda thought it was a studio job as there is no sleeve note to say where it may have been recorded. - great job they did though!
@mlrose529 Gus Dudgeon spoke about it on the Classic Albums dvd of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road..Can't remember what all he said, but buy it,so you'll know..
you probably read me wrong but yes i absolutely agree with you. that is why i said lady gaga has NOTHING on elton jhon:) did you know that lady gaga got her name from queen's song radio gaga. she is such a copy-cat.
This was a charity concert for Watford Football, which is why the black/yellow jacket EJ has on.I have part of this on dvd-r,like a couple of songs and that's it,but not this song.
Just my personal preference but I think the most awesome version of this song is on the "Here and There" album. Great vocals, clear sizzling guitar solos by Davey, it has it all.
Thanks for posting this vintage EJ, it's a clip I've never seen it before and thought I'd seen em all. Looks like the version of his band which he'd called "The Elton John Band", I think technically only lasted a year or so, even though he played with the same guys in one capacity or another, on and off for years. These were his golden years!

I love the spaced-out lyrics in this song. Makes me want to lay back and enjoy a big toke.

Oh... No sorry. I thought I read you correct :)
But still... Music nowadays sux so much! I can't find anything.
Except with a pianist David Hicken. What about rock bands - forget it :(

Just wanna bump for those appreciating the summer of '74. Elton was good top 40 rock.

this song will always remind me of Summer of '74 down the shore in Atlantic City. There was nothing hotter than Elton then.

It was never a big single in England. Just like "Candle In The Wind" wasn't a big hit in America (until later in the 1980s).
