This is from a Live performance in Tokyo (maybe Liquid Room (that's not sure, January 1995). Pure... that's when a version/cover offers really SOMETHING SPECIAL and it's not a cover done to make money or appropriate to one-self because you wanna be a famous "artist". Buckley was one beautiful specimen of maleness with out a doubt, but I don't think he did this master piece of Cohen's any favors. Hallelujah has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever composed. Many have done a nice job with it, but only KD Lang's version puts the period on the sentence of this incredible Master Piece of musical art. If you haven't seen her version,treat your self it's worth it.

@gaia1love This is my favorite performance of the song, but for me the meaning became clear when I saw Leonard Cohen perform it on a DVD from about three years ago. He even added a couple more verses in that performance. To me the meaning is summed up in "and I've seen your flag on the marble arch, but love is not a victory march; it's a cold and it's a very broken hallelujah." Leonard always chooses his words carefully, so "very" is the key word that caught my attention in that performance.

Leonard Cohen is a fantastic song-writer, as is Bob Dylan. But neither of them are the greatest of singers. Now & then, someone will cover a song of theirs & give it the justice it deserves. This is one such cover, as is Bob Dylan's 'To Ramona' brilliantly covered by Sinead Lohan. Cohen wrote the original 'Hallelujah' back in '84. John Cale covered said song in '91 as part of a Cohen tribute album. The Cale version was then covered by Buckley in years following. Buckley's version, again, is a cover of Cale's, which is a cover of the original. A cover of a cover. Whether or not one is better than the other is irrelevant. All versions are celebrated and all artists revered. Let it be.
