I've been trying to play this song the way Buckley did and I must say that when I play it it makes me feel like out of myself, it's in a way, like being able to feel what Jeff could have felt being alive, I don't know, it's just ... mindblowing, it makes me feel like If I was high on drugs, with a warm feeling but also desperate for life.
Reafirmo o que um dia disseram os criticos a respeito de Jeff Buckley e sua voz e musica: "Ele é uma gota cristalina em um oceano de ruídos". Não há melhor definição para este cara e sua musica!
oh dear... 23 people's speakers must not have been working so in a fit of frustration over not being able to jeff's beautiful singing they pressed "dislike"
God have mercy for i am walking down the road that never ends. the road that hurts that kills every part of me. the haunting ghost inside me screams for help. my mind is gone. my heart has been taken. the music i sing is the crying vocie inside of me asking for help. i feel abandoned in my own mind. my own world." - Six String Demon
When you go through heart break you lsoe everything you own music liek this helps you say whats inside your heart RIP Jeff
@stevil1300 I have sOme affection for KD but why would anyone assume to follow Jeff Buckley, unless they bring something new to the song. Even Antony covered a dIFFerent Cohen song, rather than try to top this. And Antony is the only singer who comes close to Jeff's mystical, magical delivery.
@stevil1300: I totally agree that JB caught the essence of the song and with it, the public imagination; but Jennifer Warnes' Famous Blue Raincoat is an album full of Cohen goodness. A different style, certainly, and this song is not on it, but still a must for any fan of Cohen's work.
This is from a Live performance in Tokyo (maybe Liquid Room (that's not sure, January 1995). Pure... that's when a version/cover offers really SOMETHING SPECIAL and it's not a cover done to make money or appropriate to one-self because you wanna be a famous "artist". I mainly hate most versions.... I love both from Buckley (Lilac Wine too)... he feels the songs and gives his special touch. Love his version. That is what a cover have to be: a tribute to the original.
Buckley was one beautiful specimen of maleness with out a doubt, but I don't think he did this master piece of Cohen's any favors. Hallelujah has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever composed. Many have done a nice job with it, but only KD Lang's version puts the period on the sentence of this incredible Master Piece of musical art. If you haven't seen her version, treat your self it's worth it.
@J4vandf - KD Lang is a decent singer performing a copied version in front of her hired band. Buckleys version is dark and moving. Well performed both vocally and musically. Untouchable.
@gaia1love This is my favorite performance of the song, but for me the meaning became clear when I saw Leonard Cohen perform it on a DVD from about three years ago. He even added a couple more verses in that performance. To me the meaning is summed up in "and I've seen your flag on the marble arch, but love is not a victory march; it's a cold and it's a very broken hallelujah." Leonard always chooses his words carefully, so "very" is the key word that caught my attention in that performance.
So who gives a rat's if it's a cover? I love Cohen, but Jeff knocks him on his arse with this version. No guitarist/singer can compare to Jeff Buckley, and i reckon they all accept this. Who wouldn't?
There are a few men among Humanity we refer to as 'Gods'. Jeff was one of them and he is sorely missed. May his music be remembered forever and his name forever scribed in History. Rest In Peace Jeff Buckley.
Ah yes, more people divided because of religion right here in the comments section. Just enjoy the beauty of the music you twats and take your arguments elsewhere! RIP Jeff
He fell of the river and was hit by a pasing boat..so what stupidity is this blaming God for his death. There had been greater persons in history who died early in life..check one Dr. Jose Rizal..a doctor, writer, linguist, paiter, scuptor, fencer, irrigation engineer and a patriot.
Leonard Cohen is a fantastic song-writer, as is Bob Dylan. But neither of them are the greatest of singers. Now & then, someone will cover a song of theirs & give it the justice it deserves. This is one such cover, as is Bob Dylan's 'To Ramona' brilliantly covered by Sinead Lohan. Anyone who is not emotionally wrenched by either song, is someone not worth knowing, in my book, but then again. who the fuck am I.
@neva2old2rock : Never a truer word said. I was blown away when I heard Sinead Lohan's version of To Ramona. What an amazing voice and perfect arrangement.

Cheer up . You're all a bunch of little cocksmokers. See through your gay love of this tormented pathetic fool. Realize that this is his most famous song and it's not his own. He stole it and tried to make it tormented and pathetic, which is exactly not how it is written or sung by Cohen. This is a strong song about standing up and embracing love as the driving force and meaning of life, even when it goes wrong. Buckley is a whiney, pervy wanker and the lord of song found him guilty of rape.
@skridtprygl Well, your comment was terribly unnecessary. Maybe some people just like different music than you? Shocking, I know, but the fact that someone can take an already great song, make it better and become famous for it shows how much musical ability this man had. Anywho, thanks for wasting your time to comment on this video which you clearly don't like. The only thing you achieved here was revealing yourself to be a sad ignorant person with too much time on his hands.
@skridtprygl Arn't you so gracious in explanation. Cohen proves to be a master in writing such a classic, but I'm afraid Jeff Buckley absolutely STEALS the show when it comes to performing this tune in live sessions and his original recording. I don't know why your so bitter about it, it's pure fact - listening to the two versions is evidence of that. So.. go cry.
Cohen wrote the original 'Hallelujah' back in '84. John Cale covered said song in '91 as part of a Cohen tribute album. The Cale version was then covered by Buckley in years following. Buckley's version, again, is a cover of Cale's, which is a cover of the original. A cover of a cover. Whether or not one is better than the other is irrelevant. All versions are celebrated and all artists revered. Let it be.
They should make a film about Jeff Buckley's Life... James Franco should play Jeff.. they kind of look alike... I have no idea how they will get him to sound like him though. Jeff Buckley had such a massive impact on my life... RIP

@MelleB90 God doesn't murder. He doesn't, he hasn't, he'll never murder anyone or anything. This is our life.. This is our existance, our earth. He gave it to us. The Lord is not to blame, nor is he responsible for it, when anyone dies.
@ecstasiaburdened The Old and New Testament. The exact number for God's murder is 2,476,636. The estimated amount of uncertain biblical numbers is about 25 million. So much for a benevolent God. And just for shits and giggles Satan only killed 10, the the seven sons and three daughters of Job.
@ecstasiaburdened God is a wrathful god and a merciful god. Remember the story of Noah's ark and the giant flood? that flood killed a lot of the world, just about the majority of the world.
THEY R JUST INTIMIDATED BY THE MANS VOICE, LOOKS, DARK SOUL, AND BRILLANCE...HE IS ALL AROUND THE BEST ARTIST/PERSON...HE HAS A DARK SOUL WITH DARK HUMOR...YET HE IS INTELLIGENT...WHO WUDNT WNT TO BE HIM LOL
this music is peaceful enough to make me not even want to tell @skridtprygl off.
So I'll explain it to you. It's a cover, in no way shape or form has he claimed that he wrote the song or owns it. There for he did not take it. And covers are very common in todays world. when an artists covers a song, it obviously means that he is deeply moved and truly appreciates the original writes work and he wants to keep sharing it with the world.

@PsychedelicPrimate
which bible?
ecstasiaburdened 11 months ago
@ecstasiaburdened The Old and New Testament. The exact number for God's murder is 2,476,636. The estimated amount of uncertain biblical numbers is about 25 million. So much for a benevolent God. And just for shits and giggles Satan only killed 10, the the seven sons and three daughters of Job.

@PsychedelicPrimate who was it that said beware false prophets?
akm1171 10 months ago
@ecstasiaburdened God is a wrathful god and a merciful god. Remember the story of Noah's ark and the giant flood? that flood killed a lot of the world, just about the majority of the world.

@ecstasiaburdened He most certainly does murder. Read your own book. Why are Christians so ignorant of the Bible?

this music is peaceful enough to make me not even want to tell @skridtprygl off.
