I think his voice has adapted well. Maybe it's as high and soulful as before, but now it's charming and croaking. I personally like it, reminds me of Rod Stewart, Kelly Jones etc. Keep it going Mike!
I love Michael McDonald, but this is about one step too high in the key. He may have had a throat problem or something... but I would still pay good money to see him!!
@CassiieMuffin LOL. I always see him on Family Guy and go "awwww, poor Micheal" but of course I am laughing when I say it. I grew up listening to michael (solo and with the doobie brothers) so I have always had a soft spot for him and his amazing voice.
that has to be the hardest song to sing every night. I have heard this guy live and I can say there is not a stronger voice at any age. He does not hold back for two hours....unreal.
You can't find too many singers his age who can still do their song like that that they had recorded 40 years ago..hail i've heard jokas sound worse them him on stage who did their song a year ago. gimme a break. Keep on rocking Mike..youre a legend
Hey people give the guy a break. As a singer myself I can say that we are NOT machines. He is on the leg of a tour. Also since it's live and NOT playback he is using the microphone technique that singers use to accent certain notes and to soften other ones especially when your voice is a little tired form hitting those damn high notes this guy does.
@alcatras4 Mike McDonald is an amazing vocalist and songwriter; it sounds to me that he is battling a cold here, perhaps due to the change in climate in England? I saw him a few years ago at Red Rocks in Colorado with Steely Dan, and he was amazing, but found it so difficult to breathe from the altitude, they had to bring him oxygen on-stage. Travelling to different climates does often take its toll.
@shutixa I agree. Michael has a gifted voice and everytime I hear him or the couple of times I actually saw him live, I was blown away by his vocal skills. Other "singers" like Britney Spear or Justin Beiber rely on auto-tune, playback, heavy outboard process and/or all of the above. Michael just adds a touch of reverb and BAM!!..he is a true artist and I understand completley if on this vid he sounds raspy...
I LOVE Michael MCDonalnd, he is such an unbeleivable talent with one of the best voices in the rock industry EVER but its sad to hear him struggle thru this here. he's lost his voice or is having a bad performance here. he is missing some bad notes here and sounds nothing like he should in places. very sad. but that happens. voices do go off with age and time. think he should use a different key to help. BUT he's still great tho, a music legend. if i had 1/1000 of his talent, i'd be GREAT !!
I really love his voice and this song.... this song is one of my favs of all times!! But in this performance he seems not be up for it!! voice wise... ;) It kinda made me nervous throughout by always imagning if he was gonna reach the notes ow not!! oh boy!!! (i do understand he's not as "young" as used to, just wanted to share what I felt about his performance..)
wow...i have always been a fan of the Doobie Bros and Michael McDonald as a solo artists. he still sounds great...but much different than he did just a few years ago.
You can still catch McDonald around Nashville,, dropping in to do cameo appearances at local small cafes,, like the Bluebird Cafe, and Tootsie's Orchid Lounge (famous Nashville holes in the wall)
and McDonald sang with Steely Dan until about 1980,, as memory serves
Walking home through the fields of Northumberland at 2am in the early 90s you would have heard me singing this at the top of my voice. One time I bumped into two female coppers, they nearly shit themselves and I just kept singing.
I hv to laugh tht ppl think b/c 1 ages tht their voice is expected to "age"-if u hv a good voice-it pretty much stays w/you when ur BORN with the gift. 57 is not old-You will see as you begin to approach the "40's" part of your life. . Not to get off the subject here-I'm not crazy for this performance the flow isn't steady. Cldv been done a lot better-HE is great no doubt,Rock On' music lovers~

Simply superb! This is a legend that have nothing to prove to anyone...One of the greatest voice in the history of music, incredible talent. Nothing has changed as far as this is concerned...and this is only GMTV... Imagine live! Thank you for the music Michael!
Nearly at 60 here, and he is still hitting those impossible, trademark notes. The lack of effects in the studio makes the sound flat, but man, man, man, the bruva is smoov!
he still has it...every time I hear something where it sounds like he might be loosing it i hear something ever newer and it blows me away...I think it has everything to do with the mix. This is such a dry recording, wouldn't be flattering to anyone.
@JuanOmegaIota Steely Dan's Katy Lied, with Michael McDonald's backing vocals, was released in March 1975. He had been touring with SD keyboards and vocals before Fagen and Becker switched exclusively to being a studio band. His stint with the Doobs happened after this, and, you are right, before '77's Aja.
@jmg4314 Yes yes yes, I guess we can agree that generally people attribute his "acclaim" to his work with the doob's, though. His work on Asia was 'expected' for those of us who were already voraciously reading the liner notes on every steely release to find out "who they got' into the studio! :) "Noobs" kinda didnt even realize they were hearing him on tasty S.D. tracks before hand. ":Asia" Blew it all up!! Ill say one thing: it's nice to be around other SD & DB FANS! Peace brothers!
Not his best performance, but that's what happens when every damn video ever recorded winds up on youtube. I'm sure he had some mediocre performances in clubs back when he was up and coming but nobody was able to tell him so on a message board. I love this man. I grew up with his music and think he's one of the most unique musicians in history. He's only 58. But he's always looked older than his age because of his gray hair. I remember thinking he was really old in the 80's, but he was only 30.
I doubt Michael would give a yacht about any 'haters'. Anyway they are not in his Yacht club . YACHT ROCK! Squares! The thing about the voice is it changes and he's still singing it in same key as 30 years ago. Brave!

@billycmo wow, 57!! Looks great, & DITTO to what u wrote about "taking the make voice to some of its most all time colorful places; very well written ~
Vocally this is a really ambitious song. He put that melody up in the stratosphere, it's angular in the verse, and totally exposed throughout. Without commenting on whether or not It think he's still got the *ahem* chops to pull it off today, I will say, it's impressive that he's still attempting it in the ORIGINAL key, and not transposing down a few steps (a la Billy Joel) to pull it off stronger. Not an easy tune vocally. Plus, shit is still pretty fing smoooooooooth. SO SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH
started out years ago with Steely Dan, kicked ass with the Doobs, then crafted his own mien. c'mon, his stuff is so intense, he has every right to show wear. he could knock it down a level, perhaps, but mabey the live mixer controls that for the shows, as long as he wants to perform live.....we want him live.
This, kids, is what we call real talent. You may think his voice is a little off but you see dear ones, that is because he is singing live without any kind of voice editing. Put that in your Katy Perry pipe and smoke it.
@nina052696 LMBO!! Well written! Plus the man STILL has soul ~ love love love me some Michael McDonald ~ check out his more recent material, if you haven't already!
@jphipps295 There is also a job hazard to singing. You lose your voice due to throat illness like cancer or other kinds of permanent illnesses. It would mean a lot to people like Michael McD. Timi Yuro comes to mind for throat cancer-terminal; Cyndi Lauper was out for 20 years tho I don't know what particular throat problem. Told that she would never sing again.
That's a true pro, that's what it's all about. Turning up to a breakfast TV show in England, answering the same questions with enthusiasm and a smile on your face and then singing to a backing track you probably can't hear properly through a crappy microphone. Singing with such skill and conviction that you just made a large percent of 60 million people remember why or realise for the first time that they love this guy's music.
damn u guys, give the poor man a break will you! This guy is a fcking Legend with still a great voice even at 57. Wat a performance considering this was only GMTv. Shame it wasnt the full Doobie Bros backing him up but i thought the girls sounded great also. :D
@mrperfect1879 I agree with you MrPerfect. BUT can you not see that this LIVE and still musically great. I know that you are a true fan and only wanted the very best.. This was just to promote the tour. All the best.
His vocals are completely dry here (no reverb, compression, delay, pitch correction or other effects) and he hits every note-and very well. Considering his range, and his age (56) he is still on top of his game.
I found his performance exemplary! I heard neither flat nor off-beat notes. I don't know his age, but Michael McDonald still has a great set of pipes and is one of the best 'blue-eyed soul brothers' that ever existed! Keep singing Michael, we still love you!
he's still good looking and love this song=)

OMG, he's a midget !

This, kids, is what we call real talent. You may think his voice is a little off but you see dear ones, that is because he is singing live without any kind of voice editing. Put that in your Katy Perry pipe and smoke it.

michael mc. & paul mc, the age has taken a toll on their voice, but they still can jam
jphipps295 1 year ago

MM is simply amazing...and how cool are the backup singers.

Check out the bass player behind McDonald...he reminds me of Hugh Laurie.
BTW, if you listen to the song, he's a fake bass player because the bass on the track is definitely a 5-string.

damn u guys, give the poor man a break will you! This guy is a fcking Legend with still a great voice even at 57. Wat a performance considering this was only GMTv. Shame it wasnt the full Doobie Bros backing him up but i thought the girls sounded great also. :D

This is a beautiful and soulful rendition by a more mature man.
Love this guy and everything about the process of aging and the maturing of his art.
Rave on Brother Michael.
wesvaught 1 year ago
His vocals are completely dry here (no reverb, compression, delay, pitch correction or other effects) and he hits every note-and very well. Considering his range, and his age (56) he is still on top of his game.

What was it like travelling to us?!!! This is typical more-looks-than-brains British TV presenters. Great performance by MM though.
SimonDolan 1 year ago
I found his performance exemplary! I heard neither flat nor off-beat notes. I don't know his age, but Michael McDonald still has a great set of pipes and is one of the best 'blue-eyed soul brothers' that ever existed! Keep singing Michael, we still love you!

I attribute this lackluster performance to him not having his trademark beard.
