when Aslan tackles the witch in the last battle, why does he stare into her eyes for a good 3 seconds before killing her? were they once in love or something?

That's a definite no, haha. Read "The Magician's Nephew". It's the book that comes chronologically before The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. Digory (the professor) unleashed the witch when he was a child and accidentally brought her to Narnia while Aslan was creating it. They were definitely never in love.

It's supposed to be a look of peace and acceptance from both of them. Andrew Adamson never wanted it to be about revenge, or to seem that way. So what you see there is Aslan basically accepting that he has to kill the witch, and the witch accepting that she's about to be killed. Odd, but that's how he chose to do it.
