make a giant 1 block high cauldron and fill it with it with lava, do this in the nether for a lava source, then have 2 block higher at the back of the cauldron, place ater here, it will flow down and turn the lava into obsidian, it works perfectly and doesnt use up redstone

@WhiteyG93 It works. 4 blocks long, constantly reusable. I made one 8 blocks long, but it requires lava at both ends (which meet in the middle) to cover all the redstone.

@cyber952 My friend made the texture pack that I use, and he replaced the breaking animation with a clock that works the same way. Before seeing it, I was sure I'd always stick to Vanilla.

I got like 10 and a quarter stacks of redstone easily... on my Finnish friend's private Hamachi server... It's not that hard, and with a fortune enchanted pickaxe it's even easier to get tons of redstone >.> So quit complaining about having to use redstone. It's harder to get enough lava to make it one by one.

Ummmmm..... Sorry, but this doesn't work in 1.0.0. If you do it doesn't spread. It just makes obsidian where you poor it and disapears. :(

So, lava over redstone tricks the game into making the lava that replaces the redstone a source block... Cool. Probably hard to cast the redstone lava into premade shapes like you can do the "legit" way, but free obsidian is free obsidian.

I tried this and the reason I wasn't getting it to work was I forgot to delete the blocks under the water. I'm playing on 1.7.3 and it works perfectly :)
