  • Took me a while to get it, but I'll simply say... Amazing!!

  • sounds tight brotha. and dont listen to these guys that dont like it, they just dont understand it.

  • @number1saxophone

no im sorry my friend, i play jazz myself and know what im talking about, modern jazz is what ned rothenberg is doing, yours is just sad.

  • Great! Sound´s like a bagpipe from Scotland!

    Thanks

  • The fact that you can circular breath while playing overtones on the melody and baseline all at the same time makes this one of the best videos I've ever seen. It might not sound too pretty, but you have to get past that!

  • despite the unusual technique, the piece is modal and African sounding, the rhythm is good

  • It may take talent to do this but it sure ain't a pretty "piece".

  • Whoa, God-like.

  • WTF? this is crazy. awesome. respect. if could play like that. (:

  • neat textures! kudos man

  • i think its a difficult play nicely done

  • NO WAY!!! CIRCULAR BREATHING!!! I'm so jealous you have no idea.

  • accomplished thru training ;) i can do it (not very good tho) and i dont even play any instruments :P

  • cool

  • Interesting!

  • Listen to his CD "The Crux", its awesome!

  • Awesome!!!

  • Cool textures! really enjoyed the vid.

  • tenor or alto?

  • ALTO!

  • i just dont get the concept of ciruclar breathing, i mean how do you do it?

  • ok, while breathing in through your nose, use your cheeks as a bellows to keep the air stream flowing. hope that helps

  • Also if you circular breath while playing a wind instrument your tone begins to sound like shit.

Although the tone he was trying to achieve in this video was intended to sound like an oboe or something of that variety so nothing lost.

  • No, it's possible to maintain tone while circular breathing. He does it pretty well in this video actually, he's just doing a lot of false/alternate fingerings and multiphonics so that's the "oboe like" sound you hear. Rothenberg can sustain great tone while circular breathing though, heard him do it in other contexts. Also; Evan Parker, nuff said.

  • I know, right? Is it even possible?

  • how long have you been playing?

  • this guy is astounding

  • those are some good harmonics!

  • SOLO BEM LEABAORADO PARABÉNS.

  • what type of alto is that

  • it kinda looks like my bundy alto but i'm not shure

  • how does he make it sound like that

  • very nice tune and video good job.

  • Oh my god dude that was the coolest solo on the sax I have ever seen!!!

  • WAW! Amazing! When do You inhale?!

  • he's circular breathing, he breaths why blowing out at the same time.. It's pretty difficult to do.

  • yea. its how people play the digeridoo propperly.

  • so basically he has no larrynx ^^

  • how long does it normally take to learn

  • Circular Breathing?? I've been playing 6 years and I can't circular breath.

  • Been playing since 2nd grade, I still can't either.

  • I've been playing 7 years and it is really hard to do, but I bet you can do it.

  • The circular breathing.

  • Check out Dirk Raulf playing a 10 min soprano sax solo here on youtube, using extended techniques (circular breathing etc.) as well.

  • it kinda borders almost on being a 20th century classical sax etude. using all those extended techniques like that.

  • Yeah but he's not using any classical technique...he has a very distinctive jazz sound and does not use classical vibrato. Though I bet some of these elements put into a classical piece of 21st century nature would be pretty sweet.

  • nice circular breathing and 'basically fingering' action. kind of experimental, well done!

  • agreed

  • basically fingering is an alternate fingering for a note that sounds kind of funky. however you can incorporate them into your solos and they sound pretty cool. But I tend to use them a bit more subtly than this guy.

  • Nice false fingerings, thats not easy!I'm learning to incorporate those into my solos now.

  • what are false fingerings and what can you accomplish with them??

  • alternative ways to hitting a certain note. Makes it easier to reach a certain note if the standard fingering for that note is too difficult to reach.

  • Admirable and impressive. Not my taste (I don't like Braxton or Evan Parker's playing either) but I tip my hat to his ability as a saxophonist.

  • ...yes, and not only circular breathing; this is also great in terms of false fingerings and overtone playing. For viewers who don't know Ned so well: try to check out his solo recordings and his record with New Winds. And I especially like "Opposites Attract" with Paul Dresher.

  • well for starters.. he is doing the circular breathing man. givve him props

  • he may have good technics but I just couldn't enjoy his solo...

  • Great solo performance!

    Amazing technic.

  • This is a beautiful, sensitive video of a major talent: in my view, the true heir to Anthony Braxton and Evan Parker, who will carry things on further. Yep, beautiful.

  • okay ...glad to see you join the you tube generation

    nice video....!
