Just another "Old Dudd" but these guys came to my high school in 1957 and I remember them well. We soon hopped on down to Hermosa Beach but were so underage that we had to stand out on the sidewalk---and heard Cal Tjader among others. Thanks for the memories, Inglewood 1959
Greeting to all you "old dudes". I lived right down the street from the Lighthouse for many years; it was my home away from home. Some high-powered talent went through that little club. One of my favorites was Gerald Wilson's band. Actually, John Levine owned it and Howard managed it. John turned it over to his son and it went rapidly down-hill then Howard started Concerts by the Sea on the Redondo Pier (where all the shops were).
I too frequented The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach in the 60's and saw/heard so many jazz greats. I'm glad these clips from Frankly Jazz exist to take me back to that time. The artists and their music are legendary.
I used to go to The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach in the late 60's, Howard Rumsey later sold it and opened up Concerts By The Sea on the Hermosa Pier. Saw all the BIG NAMES when they would play a few feet away from you, then sit next to them at the bar and even see them take a piss in the bathroom, none of that super star bullshit today.
@gloucester414 This, Guy's Timing and Impeccable Phrasing is Right -On .Looks like a Young, Earl Watkins from Bay area ? His, style is alot like Art Taylor -Priceless it is...
"Who is in the band?" Looks to me like Howard Rumsey of course on bass, Bob Cooper on tenor sax, looks like Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, gee can't quite place the drummer or pianist.
man it's good to see old Howard again-he once complimented me and a trumpet player on how well we'd done exchanges, when I played there on tenor as a teenager, with the Santa Monica Srenaders Dance Band, circa 1963.
names of players?? bob cooper?
