Hey I know lets send the Guantanamo people to the Fort Leavenworth Prison, maybe some of our soldiers (who I know must have a soft spot for Islam) can give them a good old fashion home welcoming party.
Hey as far as that goes Im sure they can find safety in any one of our prisons. :}
Joe is such an ass. The Nazi war criminals didn't need habeas corpus -- they had trials. The kind where one has defense counsel and the right to see the evidence brought before oneself. The whole point of habeas corpus is to provide a trial when a prisoner is being held without trial.
Promising to close the prison ONE YEAR FROM NOW is a cop out. Anything can happen in one year. Many things can change. He could have closed the prison TODAY but he DID NOT. I'm not saying the prison should be closed. I haven't looked into that matter, but getting all excited about doing something 1/4 of the way through his presidency (one year into his four year term) is silly.
Dude, it is IMPOSSIBLE for him to close it today. Simply impossible. If he were to try to do that, it would show a lack of executive experience more than anything else. While Bush was in office, there was no plan to close Gitmo, so Obama has to work from the ground up on this one. He needs to make sure there is a place to put the prisoners. Remember, not all of them are innocent.
"IMPOSSIBLE"? Yeah right. You put the prisoners in a bus, drive them to a plane, and fly them back to a prison in America where they can have a trial. It could all be done in one day. There aren't that many prisoner THERE. Get real. You are not living in reality.
Sure, it is physically possible, but lets assume that you are capable of higher thought for a minute...
So you put them in prisons in the US, you have to decide what prisoners go where as some of them are more high risk than others. You have to protect them from the non-military guards, not to mention prisoners because some have information that we are still trying to get. Not to mention the red tape in holding people who can be innocent in US prisons, because they are not all guilty.
Joe Scaroborough is a fucking idiot. Does he even think about what he says?
I'm so tired of FauxNews. They followed Bush around on Inauguration day, and a president re-taking his Oath of Office "isn't a story"? Bush isn't even a story anymore, he's just a washed up idiot now.
Wow more action than we've seen the last year. What a concept doing the job you were voted to do. Can't wait to see what gets done after he has had a full week under his belt. Good job Prez!
Oh, and Fox News: shut uppppp. I can't believe they compared a wet iPod to water-boarding. It's hypocritical to use terrorism against a terrorist. Susan Crawford said so herself.
georgezimmer - I think you're right about Fox News. I know that Bill O'Reilly's numbers are way down and Keith Olbermann is way up. But it's not just that Fox is so uber-GOP. It's that they're just so antagonistic. And in the age of bipartisanship and lets all get along - that kind of confrontational baloney (their stock in trade) is just getting a little stale and worn out.
Maplesyrup41 - we should all watch a little Fox News in with everything else. That's the only way to get a balance view point to what "the other side" is thinking. Does seem like a weird, alternat universe when I click on Fox. I was a Journalism major and you have to get news from all different sources to really know what's up.
True, but fauxnews is not news and never was. It's a biased conservative tool to control the ignorant masses. Sounds so cliche and used, but it's the simple truth
Maplesyrup41 - I agree with you but there are a lot of people who watch Fox as if it were real news (I majored in Journalism, I know the difference) - so I want to know what they're paying attention to - it gives me a clue how they think. Take a cue from Obama - keep your friends close and your enemies closer. *smile*
So you majored in Journalism? Does that mean you also get that tingly feeling running up your leg when Obama speaks? Or were you one of the journalists who could barely catch their breath on innaguration day?
kurtisdogson - I also majored in Business - I'm a small business owner - and a published author, not a journalist. No tingly feeling like Chris Matthews. That was silly. Actually I was more taken with the faces in the crowd waving flags. Obama's speech was good - but not his best. I admit I did enjoy watching history being made. Then got back to work.
kurtisdogson - one additional thought - when we get to the point where people are a little bored with Obama and it's like, "Oh geez, another speech tonight. I'm too busy." then he will REALLY be Prez. Right now he is Prez - but there's still huge focus on the novelty of it all. People need to settle down and get back to life - the lovers and the haters.
Maplesyrup41 - Sure. It more than saddens me - it infuriates me. If you know anything about Rupert Murdoch - he never intended Fox to be serious news. It was meant ot be more like "The Enquirer" news on TV (Murdoch actually is a big Obama fan himself.). Problem is - a lot of people can't discern the difference - but everyone is much better off if they understand all points of view - even if they disagree with it..
Maplesyrup41 - one more thought. We've reached a point where we don't give people credit for critical thinking skills and reasoning - so we tell them stay away from something all together - Fox news, for example. We're almost parenting them (which they don't like) rather than encourage them to think. That's not a good thing because it doesn't give people the credit to look at more news sources - on a regular basis - and come to their own conclusion.
Mgband - I dunno - I think it's a lack of critical thinking skills that got us two terms of Bush and people calling Obama a terrorist at Republican rallies. Just my take on it.
You are right, it is both. It is lack of critical thinking that gets us to uncomfortable positions. It is also our reliance on the critical thinking of others that helps to set up such events.
morning Joe is joking about water boarding...how sick! perhaps if he was subjected to a little water boarding himself he would not laugh and joke so! and FYI morning Joe water boarding has been defined as torture in this country and many others for several years now!
It's a good bet that when conservatives complain about their opposition's actions they are doing the same thing and trying to set up a defense of 'partisan' vengeance. Yet for every whining, clueless about legal precedent Scarborough, there is a murdered Klausutis whose murderer is still untried and free.
I know I love it! Remember when angry wing-bats on the Right said that CHANGE was a fantasy. Well, here is some change and these guys are hitting the ground running. So now they are complaining that there are changes. They are never happy.
To all the zombie Bush loyalist angry that Gitmo is closing, Where do you think we are keeping the heavily armed "WACO Texas" religious terorists that we arrested years ago?? In U.S. prisons, processed and serving sentences, and the bombers executed.
Gitmo is a waste of money and resources, process those people in the justice system and end the stupid endless limbo crap.
We have 245 people held there on NO charges! Charge them, process them, 20 are hardcore, others possible sheep herders!
Actually 61 who have been released have been recaptured on the battlefield (not to mention the ones not caught). So much for the "20 hardcore" estimate. Maybe you aren't as smart as you pretend to be.
Whew! That is taking bald faced lying to a new low
"Where do you think we are keeping the heavily armed "WACO Texas" religious terorists that we arrested years ago?? In U.S. prisons, processed and serving sentences, and the bombers executed."
They were burned alive in their home as you well know.
We have christian terrorists in the United States prison system, but Fox News doesn't seem to care about spreading fear about having them there. However, if you're a muslim terrorist, oh you better believe that Fox News is willing to spread fear and hatred.
Please tell me Joe's logic in that clip wasn't really:
"well if the Nazis could torture people, we can too."
My first interpretation of that statement was that Joe was suggesting that the Allies did not honor the habeus corpus rights of captured Nazis. That would be a semi-decent point except for the obvious fact of the Nuremberg Trials. Those captured Nazis were certainly given habeus corpus rights.
It's the same logic Ann Coulter had when she said Canada sent troops to Vietnam "Hopefully not enough people are smart enough to fact check, or just know that I'm outright wrong and I'll sway opinions". Same thing with Bill O'Reilly quoting a ficticious newspaper to make his point that France's economy was hurt by a boycott on goods after they didn't support us on Iraq. Democrats have done the same thing as well, but I'm a democrat so I don't keep track of all the bad things we've done :)
Shouldn't the fact that most people who watched it thought he meant it the way I interpreted it tell you something? You sure you're not just hearing it through your faux news induced filter?
I watched Morning Joe this morning when he went off on that tangent. I found myself screaming at the top of my lungs. When I saw my poor cats freak out and run out of the room, I realized that I cannot ever watch that show again. Every single time I watch it, I get so upset within minutes. I think MSNBC is trying to show they're not the liberal channel, just cuz they have Rachel/Kieth... but if I wanted to watch a blowhard yell at everyone who disagrees, even though he's wrong, I'd watch Fox
First of all, we declared war on Germany they were the definitive enemy in uniform. Whereas, there was and has yet to be a definition of what we deem a "terrorist", that puts just about everybody with brown skin on the list of subjects.
One lesson I remember from my grade school history classes. During the Revolutionary War, the British were torturing American soldiers & sympathizers on ships off the coast of New England. Washington knew it, and refused to sink to that level when it came to captured British soldiers & mercenaries. Because of his humane treatment of captured enemy soldiers, entire squads would willingly lay down their arms, march to the American lines & surrender.
