Mosney is a fantastic place where people who have nothing and have experienced things unimaginable to most of us, are recovering and being given an opportunity to make a new life. We should be proud that Ireland is so progressive to make this provision, it is the largest and probably the most efficient refugee camp in Europe, The people are content here! Pity the application process takes so long!
I have been volunteering at Mosney this summer, working with the refugee kids. It is a special place. Perhaps all of you can find comfort in the fact that people with a gruesome past, with wounded souls, are there recuperating. It is not so gloomy at all, like in this movie. It is still a cheery nice place.
I use to go der every summer for my holidays wen i was younger it was so much fun brilliant place, shame its shut down now cos even at 20 i wud still love 2 go bac
Mosney was making ALOT of money at the time it closed! why didnt the government put the asylum seekers on a ship and send them back to where they came from?? and yes i lost a special place when it closed. Remember one in three irish families went to mosney every year and i totally agree Almwitch
This is just rubbish. Check your facts. The place was going bust - it's well documented. Try and find another special place. You obviously have no idea what it's like to be an asylum seeker. Maybe if soldiers came to your house in the middle of the night and shot your family in front of you, you might understand what people have to go through.
I'm sure you've been on plenty of holidays since 2000.
Just in case you didnt know already Mosney had already shut down a while due to lack of interest before it opened as a refugee centre. If you want someone to blame have a chat with the owners. You obviously didnt go enough to keep the place open.
The persons comment is stupid but it didn't shut down and sit there doing nothing before it became a refugee centre, I went the summer before and we got a letter saying it will be closing to be a refugee centre that winter after. I think the owners didn't care enough to keep it open. I'm not 100% sure if this individual ran the place, but a guy died of cancer a few years before it closed, if he hadn't died maybe it would still be open. But whetever's done is done. It's gone.
The guy who bought the camp from Butlins in the 80's still owns it, and makes a nice profit every year now. I read an article about it in the paper. They were making no money as a holiday camp so he chose to make his money this way. Its not the asylum seekers fault Mosney closed down. It was already closed. They're trying to escape horrible situations. Unless you've experienced this kind of horror you cannot point fingers. Try thinking a bit about other people instead of your holiday plans.
Who said I thought it was their fault or that all I am thinking of is going there for a holiday? At the time I was about 12, had friends there that I could only see there and it closed without warning, without a 2 year warning that had been promised. Money seems to make the world go round to some people and its sad, sure making no profit wasnt great but if he had passion for it I'm sure he could have got money elsewhere, if they were smart enough. How is a shabby place going to attract people?
It's true - Mosney was shut down as a holiday camp because it wasn't making money. True, it was unexpected, and many people, staff included, were shocked at the news, and the short notice. But that is something to take up with the management.
To their credit the management decided to run the asylum centre there so they could keep as many of the staff in jobs as possible, and to this day most of the staff working at Mosney also worked there when it was a holiday camp.
I am not racist at all and do not hate on anyone for the closing of Mosney but I went there since I was a baby and grew up there every summer until it closed. It only lasted about 10 years for me but they are the best memories of my life. I had many happy and great times there. when it closed I was heartbroken, all we got was a letter even though there was supposed to be a 2 year warning before it closed to those of us that had a moblie home there. Summers just haven't been the same.
I do not think places like this should be used as a holding centre for asylum seekers. It was a place where people had good times in summer and one of the few places my family could escape to with many others. It was a double edged sword, people may have gooten shelter but others had a special place taken away. If the government was so bothered they could have built something for asylum seekers, i don't care the cost, I'm sure they waste money elsewhere that could have gone into it.
Well done Nicky and all involved. This story needs to be told and heard. Nicky you gave my own film 'Guest of the Nation' a screening at DarkLight for which I am ever grateful. Best of luck with this. Have heard really good things about it and trailer suggests they were right. Hope you are not getting the racist abuse I have had thrown at mine.

dont blame the asylum seekers.
blame the owner of mosney and the irish government for having created a situation to allow this to happen.
its such a terrible thing that mosney closed down.
its also a terrible thing that the assylum seekers cant work.
at the celtic tiger time, we needed workers anyway.
then everyone would have been happy!
