He is saying because at one time he "cursed thy rod and staff", ignoring the Bible verse, "despise not the chastening of the Lord", because he had not listened to the Lord's discipline he is no longer comforted. I hear him saying he wishes to be again. He is asking "Love", God is Love, to Rescue him. He is in essence repenting of not listening to the discipline of the Lord's rod and staff and asking for Love and mercy. That's what I hear.
@CJandRobin - Agreed and when you look at the lyrics "On the hill of the Son, I'm on the eve of a storm. And my word you must believe in........The Son is a direct reference to Jesus. Which in my view is the true acceptance of the Lord and the changing of his ways.

This song changed my life, this song made me strong and courageous, great lyrics and bonovox, great instrument and soothing sound, i play it every morning in a form of prayer, it really sounds like a gospel song, i love the song and the band.
