"Hankering" for Roman life?

The settlement of Britain by the Anglo-Saxons was remarkable in the extent which the newcomers AVOIDED the Roman towns. They preferred a rural, farming existence. Some Roman towns were only partially inhabited, others totally abandoned.

Roman remains were seen as "Eald enta geweorc"- the old work of giants.

This series seems to minimize the Anglo-Saxon period and everything about their culture by painting them as wanna-be Romans. I question this interpretation of history.
