When I was a preschooler, my neighbors had a pet deer named Shadow, whom I had mixed feelings about. 1) nothing called a "dee(a)r" could be all bad, but there was the issue of having the name of that scary radio character.

I'm only 23, but my mom had a bunch of these on tape and we always used to listen to them. I loved them. But damn, I had no idea. Life is awesome.

Frank Readick's transcribed introduction was used because Orson couldn't quite master the sinister laugh required of "The Shadow". During the first few seasons, the program was heard on Sunday afternoons at 5:30pm(et). By the end of World War II (when Bret Morrison assumed the role), it moved up a half-hour to 5pm, and stayed there until the end, in 1954. "Blue Coal" was the primary sponsor on the East Coast, where it was marketed; other sponsors sustained it in different regions of the U.S.
