You can tell that this is a learned musician and obviously capable of playing traditional bass. This type of playing is very cool, but I assure you I will never desire to hear this again... the technique was far more interesting than the music. That said, I hate to see young bass players pursue this style without become highly proficient in the traditional role of a bass player.... it's a waste of time and effort.
@orlandofriend You may not like to hear that kind of music but I did, very musical. And I don't think it is a waste to play like that or understand what he does. Not everyone want to play Jamerson bass line. There is a world outside of the traditional role pop and rock music ingraned in the head of too many people.
i still have yet to see the point of "piccolo bass guitar" let alone 6 string piccolo bass guitar. you're not fooling anyone. just get a guitar and stop acting like 6 string piccolo bass is it's own instrument, it's not. it's just a guitar.

@mindbodylightsound10 How much of an arrogant son of a bitch must one be to think that just because they don't like or understand a particular piece of art that it has no place in the world. If even one person enjoyed it, then it has served its purpose. The argument could be made that you're just too dull and uncultured to realize the possible beauty of it.

@infernape1jp You're retarded. Who or what U pretend 2 think I am has nothing 2 do with the fact the guy in this video is lame because he plays a bass in a way that tries 2 make it sound high pitched like a guitar, which is absurd. He should just get a guitar. Now go do your troll fanboy dance some more. U know, when U encourage people 2 make more mistakes as U do, U R only skrewing yourself, because it is telling them 2 keep making more krappy music instead of makign stuff that is cool & deep.
@DuralastTurbo So you are implying that his music isn't cool and deep? This music is absolutely amazing. He is an an astonishingly talented bassist who plays music that is moving, and pretty fucking awesome to listen to. And he gets into it when he plays (you can see him physically get into it sometimes with facial expressions, etc.) and thats deep. And im not trolling or being a fanboy. Im simply backing this guy because trolls like you just want to bash peole with more talent than them.
@infernape1jp Everything I say is true & U know it. U R just trolling.
The guy sounds ridiculous because he's trying 2 sound like guitar, up high, not bass - it's just flat-out lame & U know it. Now go listen 2 your rap krap. I'm not your 'chat buddy'. Get some real friends.
@DuralastTurbo Really? He isnt trying to sound like a guitar. If he wanted to sound like a guitar he would play guitar. And this guy is flat-out great. And YOU know it.
P.S. I have real friends kid. And I prefer to listen to system of a down mostly. Last time I checked. They arent rap.
@infernape1jp U can vomit all the retarded troll krap U like, but it doesn't change the fact the guy in this video is very lame, because he is playing a 'bass' way up high trying 2 sound like a krappy guitarist, not deep or thunderous like a good bassist - such as Billy Sheehan, who plays low down plenty =) Now go listen 2 your rap garbage.
@DuralastTurbo Kid im done arguing with you. Its obvious you dont know good quality music when you hear it, but I guess we all have different opinions on what we like to listen to and we should all respect that. And even though you dont, I will. If you dont like this guy, stop trolling his video and go watch that Billy guy.
@infernape1jp What's that troll? Vomiting more nonsense about things having nothing 2 do with the fact it's lame 2 play a bass way up high all the time wishing it was a guitar? Go on - do your troll dance. What's that U say? My shoe size affects the price of tea in China? My hair color means there will B rain tomorrow in Budapest? ROFL!! =)) U R RETARDED!!! Not kidding @ all.
U only fuk YOURSELF when U pretend this guy's FLAWS R assets. He should stop playing up high so much. It's lame
@DuralastTurbo This is a masterpiece of extremely epic proportions. Now like I said at least 90 times before, why do you have to troll someone because they have more skill than you will ever have? What you are saying currently is just as retarded as saying "My shoe size affects the price of tea in China? My hair color means there will B rain tomorrow in Budapest?" This guy is a great artist and plays the bass beautifully even if it is high instead of low. Listen to Mudita. Maybe thats low enough
@infernape1jp What's that U say troll retard? U say: "I'm such a pathetic clown I like 2 come onto U-Boob & contradict N E 1 who posts simple, obvious, verifiable facts - such as the fact this bass player sounds ridiculous playing up high all the time wishing he was a guitarist" =)
Now go listen 2 your rap CDs, & don't forget 2 eat your fried chicken!
Wow kid. Trying to be mildly racist in a way thats barely noticable? Thats great. But what im saying is this guy is amazing at what he does and he plays the bass great. Now respect my opinion and get off this guys page.
@infernape1jp U R a racist - an anti-white racist. Of course, if I were a cockroach with 6 heads, that still doesn't change the fact it's lame 2 play bass up high all the time wishing it were a guitar, & U R skrewin' YOURSELF with the dildo of bad music by encouraging people's MISTAKES, & pretending their flaws R assets. Go on dork, listen 2 your rap CDs or something. Remember, if it's garbage, that means it's 'good' =))
Hey maybe play a tuba & try & make it sound like a kazoo - so 'cool'
@infernape1jp Hey maybe U should go 2 Yahoo chat & try & find some real friends instead of being a pest on U-Boob denying things U know 2 B true, jackass.
@DuralastTurbo ur a dumbass.... billy sheehan plays his bass about the same height as this guy.... and victor wooten who destroys billy sheehan plays it just as high.... wtf does height of bass have to do with good music, ur an idiot and sheehan is a jackoff
@moosegotloose U don't believe a single word U R spewing. Sheehan plays all over, mostly deep. This guy by contrast stays high all the time immitating Spanish guitar or something = extra lame. I got news 4 U: when U pretend not 2 C the obvious, it only makes U sound MORE retarded.
@DuralastTurbo You are obviously the retarded one here. Sheehan plays well, but his songs are not close to half as epic as this guy's are. It's not immitating Spanish guitar. It's a more solid tone than that. He plays some low notes, too, to support the melody. I don't understand retards like you.
@taufoofar Dork who can't play guitar strings a bass high instead - god how lame. I notice U fart a lot of words, but nont of it changes the fact that statement is correct =) Get a life, loser.
That is stupid, if what you are saying is true then bass manufactures should make 12 fret basses then or less, if you buy an instrument play the instrument, if your instrument has 24 four frets use them, you bought the instrument. There are guidelines that are helpful to follow but remember music is an art form and he is clearly displaying some of his art here. Now you saying it lame, wouldn't you agree that playing low all the time gets rather boring?
@DuralastTurbo Lol, yet another idiot who posts on Youtube videos. This guy plays a bass for the clarity, but strings it differently for a more sustained sound. If he wanted to play guitar, he would. But he chose the bass, you got a problem with that? Playing a guitar in this style wouldn't pick up the harmonics. But a bass an octave higher can. Let's see you play something a fraction of how he plays the bass, ass hole.
@taufoofar Dork who can't play guitar strings a bass high instead - god how lame. Troll all U like, but that fact remains & who or what U pretend 2 think I am has nothing 2 do with N E of it.
ok i saw this live at victor wooten bass camp and he tried to explain how he played all this. hes a lefty but his strings are set up like a righty bass except tuned all weird. the higher strings are closer to the top of the bass and the lower strings are on the bottom. he truly is amazing.
thing is, he goes from large gauge strings, and as each string gets higher, he makes the string a lighter gauge, giving each higher string a much lighter sound. so if you want to play chords on your bass, throw on a light pair of strings. if you want to mix it up, make your low strings bigger, and your high strings lighter, or the other way around
It's easier because the strings still go left-to-right ascending. A left-handed bass is, by design, backwards. Think of it this way: Have you ever seen a left-handed piano?
Don't believe so, he strings his strings on backwards, and in this particular video you can see he's using a string stopper; hence the higher pitch. Great idea with the upside-down stringing if ya ask me, might try it out sometime myself.
dude, that's called a capo, and it's not such a great idea, just saves learning to play the other way, I used to play like that myself, it's better the other way
Ah I see, I never took any lessons due to the fact that the town I live in is too small to have a good teacher, so excuse my lack of knowledge on the various jargon. I've yet to try the backwards stringing thing, mainly cause I got more into the slap and pop so it wouldn't quite work out then. Thanks for the info though.
As a heads up, I'm unaware of his tuning, but you often need a capo because of tension. So you tune it low rather then high and can capo it on a low fret. The lower you tune it, the lower you can place the capo. However, with said end of the spectrum, you will begin to encounter more tension issues. Also, there is a difference to playing an E3 and say an E4. Look into that as well.
i didn't mean that the capo isn't a good idea, I meant the backward stringing. as I said, I learned to play with a right handed guitar, but I learned on a left handed guitar afterwards, and it's so much easier to play the way it's supposed to be strung. Sorry for the misunderstanding
You can tell that this is a learned musician and obviously capable of playing traditional bass.
