MLK's bravery and the bravery of the "little" people who marched with him, supported him - it astounds me. I lived in Mississippi from 1974 to 1980, and the racism, the hatred was so open. People say it's changed, and if it has, it's thanks to the those people who marched, who voted, who were not afraid. Even though there was much discourse in the Civil Rights Movement when MLK died, what would the US be like today, if he had lived and kept on making us face our lies. He changed the world.
i remember learning this song like in the 4th grade now i am in the 10th grade martin luther king was a great man and i believe we shall overcome someday!!!
People who hate and ridicule the occupiers as lazy scum who hypocritically wear and eat things made by corporations etc remind me of cops berating an old lady for a parking infringement while they ignore the violent armed bank robbery happening behind them. If they had a sense of perspective, they would realise that 400 individuals owning the same as the other 160 million people in the USA, is no longer tolerable !
@stylophobia great metaphore. There are a lot of things to critizice, but some enemies are bigger than others. Don't distinguish them is being an asshole. :)
@nomisaurr Who are you, nomisaurr? Are you Pete Seeger? If not, I wonder why you claim the right to speak in his name? I wonder if you like the song? If you consider yourself a peacemaker?
But, I bet you don't know that Pete Seeger performed at Occupy Wall Street in Oct. 2011 or that he played We Shall Overcome? Maybe you should find out what you're talking about before you say something the next time.
The problem with the modern day folk scene (post 1960) is the fact that they were constantly for the nigger. No matter what the black community’s shortcomings were. They still are today. Wimpy white people bleeding for an ethnic group who would ultimately end up hating them for the very same reasons that the folkies hated the established American view of the blacks for: Because of the color of their skin. Black people are the most racist people on the face of the planet..
We shall overcome IF we strive to overcome. Apathy is our first enemy and empathy is the cure. We must overcome for the only other option is to let those who oppress ruin the world in which we all live (whether through ecological disaster, nuclear and enldess war, continued social stratification & the continued divisions they feed us to keep us from recognizing the systemic problems that we all suffer together. The wars on culture, terror, & drugs mask the real war- the class war initiated by WS
It's saddens me to think that maybe we've seen all these men and women of peace come through history and change things just so we could have thie generation of apathy that I'm living in now. NOW! Our world faces some of the toughest questions and challenges it's ever had to face and everyone around me is fighting over blenders at wal-mart on black friday.
To all the homosexuals all over the world who are shunned, harassed, persecuted, ridiculed, bullied, oppressed, jailed, tortured, and/or murdered for being born who you are: Keep fighting for your human rights and dignity. You are fighting the good fight. One day bigotry and hate will fade into the shadows and the world will be much brighter.
To the heterosexuals reading this, remember that you also may belong to a group that was once oppressed and others that were unlike you fought for your human rights and dignity. Please return the favor. We all share this one Earth and no one is going anywhere. So let's all just get along and enjoy the ride together.
I heard this song in this movie called my name is Khan and the movie makes me proud to be a muslim or at least half muslim and the movie made me cry alot but its really happy too and i loved it
I am from INDIA, it's just amazing, so inspiring, i would like to compare the writer of this song to Sh. RABINDER NATH TAGORE, writer of INDIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM.
I had an opportunity of listeniing live to another folk singer named James Durst.. During his performance he kept on mentioning Pete Seeger n kept singing his versions of seeger songs... Now when I am listening to this song It keeps reminding me of that marvalous performance I witnessed in 2004 .....
@MrPierrejohansen YOU R THE TYPE OF PERSON WHO STEALS PENNIES FROM DEAD MEN EYES PETE IS A NATIONAL TREASURE WHO SPEAKS OF THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE BIG GOVERNMENT IS NOT GOOD FOR WORKING PEOPLE WEALTH IS BUILT ON WORKERS BACKS
This is the song of every body , I love it , I learned it when I was young in the middle school ROD AMAR in Algeria (north Africa) , My teacher was Mrs LAASSEL. I hope she's fine.
what happened to the minorities these days? like 40 years ago you were literally second class, inferior. Today, so many youth are trying so hard to return to that class..
"I still call myself a communist, because communism is no more what Russia made of it than Christianity is what the Churches made of it." ~Pete Seeger
I do believe that 90% of the worlds population regardless of political beliefs, ethnicity or religious belief want to live in peace, unfortunately that 90% let the 10% dictate and instgate their greedy self serving agendas, but my friends i do believe we wil;l wake up, and for the sake of my and your children and grandchildren i hope and pray that i'm proven correct, Nameste, Shanti, Peace to all my brothers and sisters.
when seeing their fellow Arabs were being killed, raped, expelled? You could sell then and at least get some compensation, or be expelled without compensation later. Very similar dynamics to what the Third Reich in the early years did - and the very reason descendants of "sellers" get much of their property restituted or compensated even decades later now. Of course something to be dreamt of - not only does Israel not restitute, it will not let Palestinians enter the land of their ascendants.
@uatwmf I agree in part, but you forget one important thing: the Zionists/Jews/first Israelis have "cleansed" what was part of Palestine and was to become Israel of most of the ethnic minority, by murder, rape and other terror as well as more or less "consensual" sale of land (do not forget much of today's restitution of Aryanized property in Germany/Austria was "officially" sold, too, not expropriated; but how free were the Jews selling their property to Nazis, how free were the Palestinians
Even on the comments for this song, people are still bickering about who started what an who's the real problem. It takes two sides to have a war. No side is free of blame. I would've thought that the comments here would've been better. Peace is the message.
Love Pete Seeger....a hero for working people and a talented one at that. By the way, the whole "Jews as oppressers thing" and "Palestine" don't really work considering Jews led the civil rights struggle and the fact that Palestinians engage in acts of terrorism rather than civil disobedience. Also, they have been offered generous peace deals several times in the past and are better off than most Arabs, so shove it.
@DJSolomon94 "Generous peace deals" after illegal immigrants expropriated them of their Native land of many centuries with the help of the international community - are you kidding yourself? Which civil rights in your opinion do Jews lead in Palestine and Israel? The Jews who build Jew-only roads? The Jews who continue to ethnically expropriate Arab property and build Jewish housing in Jerusalem, inter alia (what's the difference to Aryanization again?)? The Jews who demand allegiance vows of
@DJSolomon94 the remaining Arab minority within Israel, vows on the Israeli flag (what's the difference to Jewish assimiliation in Germany before WWII, except that there the government did not try to officially make Jews swear allegiance to the Germans and extermination of deviant thinking/solidarity with one's own kind?)?
I can hardly believe a pro-Israeli man, Jew or non-Jew, can honestly love Pete Seeger and his work. At the very least they fail to understand him.
That song is sang right after the national anthem to start every meeting of the local Minutemen. Let us all pray that they do overcome the powerful and evil forces aligned against them --- liberals, open-borders freaks, the US Chamber of Commerce/greedy scumbag employers of illegal aliens, the ACLU, the SPLC, La Raza, the mainstream media, and most federal politicians of either party.
@american37 How very freaking ironic. Right-wing loons singing a leftist song that became a standard of the civil rights movement and bitching about liberals and the Southern Poverty Law Center. You people don't know left from right--or probably up from down. Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe we will overcome goofballs such as you.
By the way everybody, I'm not socialist or anything, but I felt the need to clarify: socalism is just government ownership and control over production. COMMUNISM is the government having power over everything, and having everybody be equal.
Actually, though socialism isn't strong in America, countries like France, Switzerland, and England are more socialist than us, so, really, socialism isn't that bad.(Again, not socialist)
Until all human beings realize that we are all in the same boat or at least most do, we will always have bad troubles. We all need decent food, housing, health care, civil rights, good pay for work, access to quality education without large debt, access to opportunity. Until we learn to quit falling for the bullshit of the Scott Walkers, George Bushes, Tony Blairs, and Barack Obamas of the world we will never get there. No more New World Order approved leaders. We must make our own leaders.
@heartfire451 u set it beautiful..and not just here my brother..all over the world the people who have no voice..we shall speak for them..and at least try to make the world a better place for us all rather than just rich people..i dont understand how annyone else cant see this? o yea i forgot watching sports is more fun..
@heartfire451 yes, but it's not even about making our own leaders, we must be our own leader. we must make our local communities ecologically and fiscally sustainable. stop looking anywhere else for the answer but to yourself. we each, everyone and everywhere need to take care of ourselves so abundantly that we have overflowing resources to help our neighbors. as long as we look to anyone else to care for us or be the answer for us, we will always be disadvantaged. it must be from and by us.
I love this song because it speaks of hope and there will always be hope as long as there are those who keep believing in freedom and the right of every person to be free.
@FlameBaiter oh right and there should b one race everyone should believe in fairy stories about other races. and think life is fucking lovely. im white and i believe that regardless of race or creed it is the individual that can make bad choices! now fuck you you racist cunt come and fight me u mong or maybe your to pussy
@ibidydo Let's not fight, 'kay? I agree with you, but let's not get mean about it; who knows? This FlameBaiter guy may be struggling with his own demons, and wants to take out his anger or pain on someone else.
I am the father of the 4th grader who posted. I just got home from work and he is sitting here, listening to this and posting. I am one proud dad. From the mouths of babes come simple truths. God Bless

who ever put dislike your crazy i just found this out today by my teacher and im only in 4th grade and i like this song its making me and my teacher cry....................so now no more saying dis like to this song if you are dating a white girl and your black you would not have been able to marry your wife if martin did not fight for our freedom and our rights that wight people think they are better then black people thank you god and martin luther king juiner thank god for doing that for us
Ye sentient beings of this Grid, should be ashamed of yourselves, bickering like fools in the Void (cuz thats all you are anyway) We all live in a world where we all grow old and die, why be disharmonious?
If you still believe that tho current problem of America is rasism you should wake up. But I guess you are really pissed off right now so I appreciate the fact that you love and respect the meaning of this (f**cking nah I'm just kidding) song.
in general you are either the far stupidest person I have ever saw a comment written by,
or you are just looking for attention by making your f**kng stupid comment
(I would suggest you figure out what this song is about, and report back to me with an apology to everyone who was and is opressed on this earth, thank you.)
@tantawi1992 Saying that this song is meaningless, is to approve of slavery. It is to say that Martin Luther King and millions of other freedom-fighters had a meaning-less culture that kept them together..
Oh you degenerate African Americans crying and bitching all the time bout' not being equal and all. Racism's over and done with. You had your fun, made your fuss, got your attention like a desperate child. Now get back to the cotton fields, yeh? White folk, teach your children to look out for the brutal, savage, rapist tendencies of the shit skins.
niggers, while you're at it...call me "master" .
Spread the message! Put the niggers where they belong- on the end of a nice long rope.
@tantawi1992 LOL---Another Republican claiming to be a liberal so people will listen to you. Again if you were a liberal you would not have the attitude you have. You don't understand what being a liberal is. So feel free with your response to denigrate and insult, that only proves further you are not liberal
@tantawi1992 Judging from your comment you obviously are a closet republican with a lot of repressed anger. perhaps you need to talk out your issues with somebody. A real liberal may have comment that this was not the style of music he likes. But then again a real liberal would know this song is not about you enjoying it, it is about the feeling it generates from a group of people working for a goal. I would appreciate it if you stop calling yourself a liberal, your aren't.
I had an oppurtunity to sing song along with cancer survivors holding their hands. Really that was a unforgetable moment in my life . Sure this song is highy inspirining.
I had an oppurtunity to sing song along with cancer survivors holding their hands. Really that was a unforgetable moment in my life . Sure this song is highy inspirining.
this song was originally a lutheran chant, written during the war with the catholic church! the social context was added centuries later by certain artists. Someone would think all of you proud, WASP nationalists would know this. Listen to the words and the music! This is a great song!
Shut the fuck up all of you this is just a song for all the dumbass niggers that got away from their fields and need to be put back in the pens to get whipped
My class listened to my teacher read his speach then do a paper on a world changing dream.THEN in music class listen to this

dinavienna 9 months ago
@DJSolomon94 the remaining Arab minority within Israel, vows on the Israeli flag (what's the difference to Jewish assimiliation in Germany before WWII, except that there the government did not try to officially make Jews swear allegiance to the Germans and extermination of deviant thinking/solidarity with one's own kind?)?
I can hardly believe a pro-Israeli man, Jew or non-Jew, can honestly love Pete Seeger and his work. At the very least they fail to understand him.

That song is sang right after the national anthem to start every meeting of the local Minutemen. Let us all pray that they do overcome the powerful and evil forces aligned against them --- liberals, open-borders freaks, the US Chamber of Commerce/greedy scumbag employers of illegal aliens, the ACLU, the SPLC, La Raza, the mainstream media, and most federal politicians of either party.
american37 10 months ago
@american37 How very freaking ironic. Right-wing loons singing a leftist song that became a standard of the civil rights movement and bitching about liberals and the Southern Poverty Law Center. You people don't know left from right--or probably up from down. Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe we will overcome goofballs such as you.

note his original contribution -- the last verse "the whole wide world around" -- certainly in part a legacy of his socialist internationalism
freeunion 10 months ago
By the way everybody, I'm not socialist or anything, but I felt the need to clarify: socalism is just government ownership and control over production. COMMUNISM is the government having power over everything, and having everybody be equal.
Actually, though socialism isn't strong in America, countries like France, Switzerland, and England are more socialist than us, so, really, socialism isn't that bad.(Again, not socialist)
...Just clarifying.

@heartfire451 ...you couldn't have left that shit alone in just this one video
tylerblogger 5 months ago
@heartfire451 yes, but it's not even about making our own leaders, we must be our own leader. we must make our local communities ecologically and fiscally sustainable. stop looking anywhere else for the answer but to yourself. we each, everyone and everywhere need to take care of ourselves so abundantly that we have overflowing resources to help our neighbors. as long as we look to anyone else to care for us or be the answer for us, we will always be disadvantaged. it must be from and by us.

@tantawi1992 LOL---Another Republican claiming to be a liberal so people will listen to you. Again if you were a liberal you would not have the attitude you have. You don't understand what being a liberal is. So feel free with your response to denigrate and insult, that only proves further you are not liberal
Cimiar 1 year ago
@tantawi1992 Judging from your comment you obviously are a closet republican with a lot of repressed anger. perhaps you need to talk out your issues with somebody. A real liberal may have comment that this was not the style of music he likes. But then again a real liberal would know this song is not about you enjoying it, it is about the feeling it generates from a group of people working for a goal. I would appreciate it if you stop calling yourself a liberal, your aren't.

this song was originally a lutheran chant, written during the war with the catholic church! the social context was added centuries later by certain artists. Someone would think all of you proud, WASP nationalists would know this. Listen to the words and the music! This is a great song!
