Loved this song back in the day---finally got it on a Prince compilation from the movie GIRL 6 (SpikeLee's worst film--sorry,but it is) when I found out the Family album was out of print---if it's on CD, can someone please let me know? I would love to get it---I haven't seen this video in who knows how long! St. Paul put out a solo album not long after this, but it never got pushed for some reason--too bad, because it seemed like he had some real talent. Love the dances--very Prince-ish.
Saw the reunited Family lat night in LA (as "FDeluxe") with St. Paul (Peterson), Susannah, Jellybean, Eric Leeds, etc. - plus Wendy & Lisa, too! They rocked the house and were ultra-funky even 25+ yrs later - the band are all talented musicians in their own right and were hampered by Prince's control-freak nature. - in fact, it's Prince I heard who sent them a cease-&-desist letter recently to forbid them from using "The Family" name to promote their new CD (Gaslight) and tour - how petty?!
I was listening to this song the other day and I remember it long time ago but I forgot who the group were, listening I thought they were black and now I'm looking at the video and they have awesome voices they sound like " Loose Ends" group a little.
one of my all time favs but, now 25 years later I have to wonder if Prince's imprint wasn't too heavy on his groups like this. he could have done this song himself (since it's obvious he did so much on it-backing vocals, screams, the beat, the synth) its 98% Prince and 2% Paul and Suzanne. Maybe if he'd let them have a little more freedom to express their own sounds they would have lasted longer. In 85 Prince's own music was in HEAVY rotation. Too much of anything can be a bad thing
Ramses II doesn't your mommie look sexy? LOL, You are fascinating young lady. You should have let that darn child set sail!!!!! i know Zeus is your brother and all but got darn it this is too too too much. Suzzie Q.
prince all day all of this stuff was prince the whole 1980 sound was prince yet i still love it!!!! check out my song the truth..on my page if you like this!!!
This was mainstream r&b funk and soul when I was in high school first year in college and now what passes for black music in 2010 is talentless people Souljah Boy, Trey Songz, Beyonce and Rhianna good god it's patheic. I wish there was a Time Machine I would go back in a heartbeat just to see this on BET and looking forward to the next Jesse Johnson, Prince and the Revolution and Mazarati albums
@TheNewsoul2 You hit the nail right on the head with your comment. I toast to you my friend. My, My how I miss those days and the "Minneapolis Sound" . Take care and God Bless You.
@TheNewsoul2 I totally agree. I was in high school when this awesome track came out. I knew it had Prince written all over it and that was a great thing!! THe Family were more talented than the corporate churned out pop acts today
@TheNewsoul2 So So right. I wish for that same time machine. I wish for record companies that get behind talent. The funny thing is a lot of these pop acts fall by the wayside and end up owing the record companies money. A lot of "has been" soul acts still tour and make a great living. Real music has to make a comeback one day-some way
This era of mainstream black commerical music talented people playing great music now we have producers who couldn't produce a record to save their lives and so-called artists who belong in the chitlin circuit while the great talent that is playing in bars and not playing in arenas and stadiums. That does not seem fair that Trey Songz, Beyonce , Soulja Boy and other talentless wonders are the caretakers of black music's wonderful legacy.
WHOOOAAAAA are you serious trey songz cut his teeth writing for a few years before getting his break and beyonce was busting her hum since the 1992 come on bro dont shoot down the new people before you know how hard they worked to get their ,
Also they are not talentless you should hear beyonce sing gospel or opera.
now rihanna and soulja boy are another story but its not like the 80s didnt have acts that their talent was not in question dude be fair.
@TheNewsoul2 I feel what you're saying, but here's the thing: soulful music is out there, IF YOU KNOW WHERE TO LOOK, and Believe me, you WON'T find hardly any of it in mainstream music today. Artists like Deborah Bond, Ledisi, Kem, Rahsaan Patterson, Mint Condition, Leela James, and Ndambi are still bringing the soul. Check 'em out when you get a chance, AND the Family is still doing it, too, now known as fDELUXE. Check out the rehearsal video at St. Paul's house - they are JAMMIN'!!!!!!!
Anyone notice that the female lead singer looks a LOT like Wendy from the Revolution? I believe her name is Suzanna/Susanna and she is Wendy's sister. Can anyone verify?
One of the best treasures of the 80's without a doubt. That orchestra in the background is the work of Clare Fischer who has been writing orchestral arrangements for Prince since 85. One of the key contributors to the Paisley Park sound Prince is famous for. Google him - very talented guy.
I was also about 14 or 15 when this came out. I remember Purple Rain the Movie came out October of 84 and this song came out the following year. I love the signature beat of Prince in this song. I would love to take a time machine and go back to these days.
Actually you can find this song on the "GIRL 6 "soundtrack. AWESOME SOUNTRACK. . The family is on it. here is the track listing. you can still get this CD .
1." She Spoke 2 Me" 4:19 2." Pink Cashmere" 6:15 3 . "Count the Days" by the New Power Generation 3:26 4. "Girls & Boys" 5:31 5. "The Screams of Passion" by The Family 5:27 6. "Nasty Girl" by Vanity 6 5:14 7. "Erotic City" 3:55 8. "Hot Thing" 5:41 9. "Adore" 6:31 10 ."The Cross" 4:46 11. "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" 3:55 12. "Don't Talk 2 Strangers" 3:11 13. "Girl 6" by the New Power Generation 4:04
Could have been a much better video if they had actually performed at a beach, instead in front of a blue screen, which gives it a crappy cheap tacky look...
They could have been right behind the orchestra on a slight elevated outcropping with the waves spalshing about; would have been great....
They were on Prince's own record label and they probably didn't have a very big music video budget. All his artists there always tended to make one per album. Prince must have been pleased with the look though, because his video for "Mountains", which came out about a year has the same effects.
Back when music was MUSIC. This song never gets old! *does The Snake right out the door*

@VanteStyle I think the point was to have his imprint on the artists. I don't think he wanted it any other way.
