i agree with you, her german is really good. and she's singing it-let's say ok...but listen to Natalie Dessay, i have never heard a rendition that beautiful!!
OMG, where's the lyrical line? Nonexistent. Typical "precious" over-refined pufflets of sound that passes for artistry. Try Lotte Lehmann to hear beautiful phrasing or David Nadien on violin.
I'm holding the sheet music in front of me right now, and she doesn't even do all the grace notes, and you'd be surprised at all the tiny dynamical marks that she's actually doing pretty well.
Her German is not the best. Remembering the late Elisabeth Schwarzkopf: A clear pronounciantion is mostly important thing, and exactly that is missing here.
Im german too and I can say she sounds well and is well understandable. Her pronounciation doesnt sound strange in any way and accent is charming ;-)
Lot of (german) opera singers do the mistake and pronounce the "S" and "T" sounds much too strong because they where educated this way. That sounds strange and un-natural and I am glad that she does better.
Maybe that is a reason that I often dont like opera singing, but I like Sumi, she is exceptional.
Thanks for posting your opinion. I'm not a native German speaker, but I was wondering if her German was understandable to native speakers. I think she sounds nice also.
There is a video here on youtube where she sings Gluck's "Ich liebe Dich". This is a very recent recording made by KBS. I have retranslated her words into english. Here pronounciation is even better there.
Note that opera singing is sometimes difficult to understand for native speakers because there are many ancient word and expressions.
Please, Schwarzkopf was singing in her native language! If you would know how much work it takes for a foreigner to sing well in German. I would have loved to see how well a german singer would be able to go when singing something in....let's say Turkish. But you are right, it is the only thing that is missing here :)
The embellishment is written in the peice. And there is hardly any. Only couple grace notes here and there. If that's too much embellishment then I don't know you'd say if you heard most opera music....yoy

She is beautiful...And Mendelssohn's music is so universal...his passion and sincerity can reach any singer and any other musician for that matter.

Voice OK; but too much embellishment for me for this piece - prefer something plainer and more delicate.
