  • The song is just your basic lesson about what happens when one thinks the grass on the other side looks greener. It's a lesson that still applies even today.

  • so touched, aint that?

  • i love this song

  • she is taking on chose a life of excitement and luxury over what was normal (i.e. settling down & having a child), which is the life of the housewife the singer is talking to; she says that she has been everywhere and has done everything the housewife might have done if she followed the singer's path, but now the singer realizes that those 'normal' things is what would have made her life meaningful.

  • The singer tells of some of the highlights of her life, but the tone is bittersweet and she wishes that someone had told her what she is telling the listener. She has learned what is important, but now it is too late. She finds her life hollow and without purpose, having lost her real self years before — the "me" she has never been to, is the life that she would have led if she hadn't been lured away by false ideas."

  • I thought it was about a washed out, lonely, old sleaze who regrets having never settled down. Now she’s assuring a younger woman (who has settled down) that she wishes she hadn’t chosen the kind of life she led.

It’s kind of like 'The Happy Hooker' meets Caroline Ingalls, the mom from “Little House on the prairie."

  • Unborn children! A phrase spoken by pro-lifers

  • Awesome.haunting song. I bought this on a 45RPM vinyl for my daughter. She loved it and that was about 33 years ago.

  • I have heard Charlene explain exactly what she was singing about, and it was as I stated. A song may mean totally different things to all who experienced that subjective time in one's life, but Charlene did explain her meaning. It's an awesome song and it means what 'you' want it to mean. However, Charlene states that she simply didn't realize what was 'really' important in this life. Thanks and Peace...

  • " theres only one who can tell us what she really meant by this and thats the writer or author of this song....... we can never know whats on her mind.... it could mean anything....

  • 100% Pro-Choice ~

  • love it..

  • This song always reminds me of Priscilla Queen of the Desert :)

  • I still remember this song played at my high school grad while gazing into my girfriend's eyes, we shared so much of that year together; we ate lunch outside together everyday; we played sports together; I remember her blue eyes lighting up every morning as she arrived to greet me at my locker. At that time being apart for three hours was an eternity. This song reminds me of what was and could have been. Yes, the years are fleeting. Many years later I now know what that means.

  • There is something spelled wrong. It is supposed to be "you're" not "your". I saw it quickly. Excellent sound, great video, I really like it. Thank you.

  • i really enjoyed this song!this is one of my favorite.

  • its a story of contentment and realizing that happiness always start on your self

  • I know what it's like to be without a family. I'm never listening to this again.

  • @blakspyder If what you say is true then you should know how good the song is. Dont blame the song or artist for your misfortune.

  • @panoramic3000 Nothing in my last comment said anything about blaming anyone. I said I was never listening to it again because it hurts. And the fact that it hurts shows how good of a song it is. Focus on the song, not on misinterpreting my comment. :)

  • @blakspyder The defence rests. Thankfully everyone who feels pain when listening to emotive songs like this doesnt share the same attitude or no artist would ever write or perform them. Perhaps you should look into some counselling to help you overcome your pain.

  • My mum sang this to me as a child, and when i have my own children i will do the same. THE most powerful song i have ever heard x

  • I think we all reaches points in life when we look back, see how the choices we did made us the persons we are today. I love this song, because it is about life !!

  • its a nice song for me..

  • Obrigado minha linda e maravilhosa neta , continua linda hoje com 5 aninhos ... Beijosss do seu avo .

  • Niece is spelled "Nice."

  • The song is about exactly as stated above. She experienced what she thought was the 'good life', but laments that she didn't raise a family. 'Danced like Harlow in Monte Carlo' suggests the good life. She means that she only now realizes what she should have a long time ago. She is trying to give her newfound wisdom to a younger woman. The me suggests that she only now found herself, and the wisdom to know the difference. Awesome song and I recall listening to it all the time. Thanks and Peace...

  • @dajdooley I agree with you. this is my favorite ever since i was a kid. I found Charlene's voice so sweet and comforting.. I love to sing this song in the videoke when we are jamming. i never get tired listening to this song.

  • @dajdooley i think your right....... ;)

  • I HAVENT EITHER!

  • If anyone didn't know this song is from 1976 but was rereleased in early 1982 and cracked the billboard Top 40 on that same timeframe.

  • Great song, I don't understand why they never play this on the radio anymore, I didn't even know this song existed until 1999 and was surprised it was a Top 10 hit and most of the major Top 10 hits were still getting radio airplay

  • No, it's about a whore woman. She's been in many placing having sex with someone else and the time when she's pregnant and she aborted the baby..hahaha..Girls don't be a whore. No man will seriously fallen for you!

  • yes..that's true it's talk about a meaning of present their affection....

  • haha Sue Sylvester brought me here xD

  • this song never grows old:)~i love it!

  • Thumbs up if you're still listening this in 2012 :)

  • There have always been two lyrics, that songwriters have avoided. The other one is "I wonder as I wander..."

  • 41 guys listen Justin Bieber XD

  • like

  • shes trying to tell all ladies about her life and try to teach lesson the true meaning of happiness.......care and love...............

  • Hit #1 on the Australian pop chart for 6 weeks in June 1982

  • forgive me, lord..........

  • this song is what a lot of woman have in mind...especially those who never got the chance to spread their wings and explore the world...

that some of us have been to places some of us have never been but still hopes to find what they are looking for in life... that's life not being perfect...

    I DEFINITELY LOVE THIS SONG...

  • just put a "d" on move like harlow, thats better english

  • I read the lyrics and just from there, you can tell it has nothing to do with abortion. I have spent the last few years traveling and I can relate to the singer, in that she wants to have a family with husband and kids. So, the line about unborn children is about the kids she could have if she had settled down instead of traveling around the world.

  • i've sing this song in videoke , and i''m been sad for unborn children they have no chance to spread their wing and let it, be free , to see what? is the beauty of the the world, that gods given to us

  • My mother used to sing this when I was little. I think that was in the year of '95. I loved hearing her sing this even though I never really understood what it really was until I searched it by myself. It makes my eyes teary too as I reminisce the old simpler times...

  • the unborn children were the children she could not allow her self to become pregnet with. not abortions.

  • i so love this song...my masterpiece pagdating s videoke hehehe pag eto n kinakanta ko grabe feel n feel ko kumanta...and every piece of the lyrics..tagos s buto...

  • i always hear this song during my childhood and i love hearing it, until now it still sweet in my ears. hearing it sometimes makes me teary a little bit, but somehow makes me smile though.. i can relate somehow coz i am one of those people here who love exploring new things sometimes forgetting the fact that we are leaving something behind. just a happy go lucky one who doesn't even thinking the consequences aftermath.

  • this is the favorite song of my mother when i was a child......share lang masyado ako naging madrama

  • what a memory.... grabi napaiyak ako naalala ko ung mother ko nung kinanta nya to sa Skul namin nun.... and i am proud to say maganda ung boses nya......... miss u mom.....

  • one of my fav song,,,,

  • I'm sorry, but the excellent quality of this video in no way diminishes my overpowering urge to jump into my speaker and forcibly remove Mrs Oliver's vocal chords with my bare hands.

  • so relaxing itong kantang ito...

  • its very nice song....

  • I agree its not about abortion. It seems a tired housewife wanted to leave her husband and children to explore the world then there comes this single carefree girl who wants what she has, telling her life is not only about the adventure but about appreciating and loving herself "I have never been to me", How many of us have really explore who we are really?"

  • @beautifulflames i agree with you

  • nice song i'm so touching.

  • @akosiriza19 im so touching hmm,,, i guess "i'm so touched" is the right one.. what do you think??

  • *Had the Song Gone on Just a Few Seconds Longer:

(the music stops and the other woman responds with): "Sounds like you're life has been a hell of a lot more interesting than mine. Thanks a bunch, Charlene, for trying to cheer me up! Fail."

  • IVE BEEN TO PARADISE.....yeah sounds lovely...quite exciting

  • Touching!

  • "...ive been to paradise but ive never been to me" :( :( looking for nothing......

  • Love this song to...immortal !!!

  • Love this song!

  • awesome!

  • When i heard this song it's remind's me always how i love my family and it re- refresh me...

  • Such a beautiful and meaningful song.... I just love it ;-) <3

  • i love this song !!!

  • Fabulous!!!!!

  • this song helped me through my difficulties in my life... keeping the family together... now, as a happy grandmother, want to thank Charlene...

  • Motown first released this song in 1976,it bubbled under ..it was re-released in 1982..remember it well. My 6th grade teacher used it a defense against throwing hot water on her husbands balls that sameyear...

  • @nealadams70 lol wtf!

  • @jakijo72 believe it ...LOS ANGELES

  • wow..this is awesome! Thanks Uzo

  • One of the best song I heard in my life. Beautiful lyrics which inspire millions.

    Thanks a lot.

  • I use to go around singing this as a kid as my mother played on the record player, and had no idea of its meaning.

  • @christina1276 Yep. I too loved it as a kid, but now that I understand it as an adult it means SO much more!

  • its a song about choice in general. we run from what might be then live in regret of what might have been. Beautiful song.

  • oohhh so nice song...

  • this is my long time favorite song thanks to youtube a lot.

  • this song is one of my favorites ^_^

  • This makes me think of that cougar from "Just Shoot Me."

  • She's had sex a lot but she's never touched herself.

  • @SirKevinMartin that's pretty much the jist of it bro.

  • Its not about abortion, everyone jumps to the wrong conclusion, wasnt even meant to cause a debate, the "unborn children" was her sadness at the possiblity of haveing a good life with a family, that she gave up due to her carefree lifestyle, and she is explaining it to a an unhappy wife, that she has what she could have had and wishes the girl would see the light.

  • @leafsfourever : I agree on ur explannation.....

  • @leafsfourever : you are such a great person. in addition, tahnks for the uploader.

  • @leafsfourever All I can add to your comment is simply Bravo. Plus even being a guy I really liked this song and it was released when I was a mere 20 Years old. Good Comment

  • @leafsfourever yes, totally agreed, i'm with you absolutely.

  • I'm a nurse,26 yo., and i'll always have this song in my playlist every time i have my duty. It helps me to think and relax esp.on hard times,..

  • so cool!

  • love it sooooooooo much ^_^

  • Are we supposed to feel sorry for this jet setting whore living the good life?

  • im here because of wii music obviously :/

  • This Music brings me to the other places!

  • SHUT UP AND ENJOY THE MUSIC!

  • DAMN.. what a great song! :))

  • this songs must become a reminder of today's children especially the teenage girls.

  • @dreamer660 yeah i agree :)

  • I always wondered if the song would have been as popular if they hadn't changed the title from I've Never Been To Leeds.

  • Hopefully I could make a AVP of this song showing the importance of life & my advocacy for pro-life most especially my fight against the RH Bill. This song serves as my eye opener on the importance of life

  • @charlenem88 I don't think the focus of the song is on abortion....the main point is a woman never finding happiness because they simply couldn't be content with what she had. The line about "unborn children might have made me complete" doesn't necessarily mean she had abortions. She may have simply chosen never to settle down and become a wife and, subsequently, a mother.

  • @GeorgiaKev

Why not? It says so, in plain words. An onlooker, old lady, telling a young mother her story.

  • @hkjazzable I think I've already explained it fully. The one line about "unborn children" may or may not have been refering to abortions she had, but that wasn't the main focus here....I think the sentence that summarized the song best was "You know what paradise is? It's a lie--a fantasy recreated about people and places as we'd like them to be. But TRUTH is....(the family you're so blessed to have).

  • @GeorgiaKev

The main focus of the song is clear. What I feel is, the line about unborn children is obviously her regret. I think people has the right to like this song just because it says things in plain words and shows clear stance. Thank you Charlene!

  • @hkjazzable I think she has A LOT of regrets.

  • the song was wow great the lyrics was inspirational and fantastic i like the video so much.......

  • ..the isles of Greece...that's the most beautiful thing in the world...

  • God give me the courage to endure freedom.

  • Sue Sylvestor bring me here

  • LOL!!!! People have crazy interpretations about this song!

  • Slut, the reason no guy will settle down with you is cus your riddled with STDs

  • it makes me cry anytime

  • IT'S A BEAUTIFUL SONG,IT WILL NOT FADE AWAY!!!!!!!!

  • classic!

  • it was so relaxing when i heard this song,..

  • She's a whore. She was thinking that being with somebody is enough to have a happy life but she was wrong. She realize that you'll be happy when you have husband that loves you and a little child that you're holding in every morn till night.

  • @amazingalex20008 My first thought was that she gets around.

  • great! for stillprayingonit

  • Agree 100% with stillprayonit!

  • I can't help seeing those drag queens from Prisilla queen of the desert, parodying this song when ever I hear it. The melodic melody is beautiful but the lyrics are so esoteric, really lady you lived the material good life all these years and now you wanna bitch about it well boo hoo ;) I'd take all those undressings by kings over struggling to pay the monthly rent anyday...

  • A very meaningful song...Couldn't help myself liking not only the lyrics but the music as a whole..The blending is very subtle, Charlene didn't possess a belting prowess but this can be a good bet in line with her contemporaries...Lastly, the meaning is very sentimental yet full of maturity...This is one among my favorites whenever I have time singing KARAOKE...

  • 28 people just don't have taste in wonderful music

  • i really like this song, and it makes me feel comfortable every time when i listing this. . . thumbs-up for charlene

  • I always thought irish singer DANA sang this. Something new you learn every day I guess.

  • really like since i was a child, we both like with my brother.

  • Wow... All these years later and the impact is about the same. Fantastic! Such a breath of fresh air after all the reality/make it famous in a minute/hype stuff htat's out there now. Thank you Charlene!

  • @mellerick100 thank the composer.LOL.

  • fantastic song classic!

  • i forgot this song and just saw it on a icon screen poignent and personal thats the great advantage of youtube it brings songs like these back ones that had much more to say than the majority we hear today.

  • I heard this song through my "adventure" years and instantly fell in love with it. It made me think how my life has been. Since then, I have found my ways. Heard it again yesterday Funny how I can still relate to the song. Brought tears to my eyes. The role has reversed. I am now the advisor and no longer the advisee. I still dream about things I'll never do and I still want to be free. I met my soul mate recently but not sure if he is ready to commit. This song remind me to be grounded

  • i lovw

  • JACKSON 5 IS MUCH BETTER I MEEN GEE

  • @satch0phile dhr

  • i don't know what to make of the song its kinda a good song says one half the other says your much more is a soul fan your likin this but its a bit wishy-washy not that i don't like the song but gee what do i make of it

  • i heard this on wii music then found it in the charity shop on vinyl i realy wanted to hear it so i gave it a spin this is going into my favorites

  • @satch0phile , same here! i was going through songs and i heard Wii Music's version and i thought, "I have to find the full song!" i came on to YouTube and found it and was DEEPLY moved by this song! I think that ANY woman could learn something from this song, especially young women! Instant favorite song for me!

  • When I need to feel grounded, when life gets to be too much, and I am searching for the elusive, I listen to this song. It always brings me full circle to what life is truly all about.~ Peace

  • I would say this is a confession from a 'subtle whore' to young women who should not live in man-made fantasies... it's great! Old songs will last...

  • I really love this song.. and hey great choice of photographs to complete...

  • what a song.superb singer love it !!!

  • I remember watching a interview with Charlene after this came out. She had recorded it 5 years earlier in some studio session, and had forgotten about it. She had given up singing, and became a housewife with two kids. She said that she heard it on the radio while she was washing dishes, and that she was being touted as the next new star. She kept washing the dishes. Thats why no one has heard of her before or after. Somebody made money sifting through lost recordings in studio vaults.

  • after hearing this song , all my sadness had gone away

thnks Charlene :* love u with all heart

  • Meaningfull song!

  • @nguyenthihangdhsp This song reminds me of when I have just fallen in love with my fiance. We heard it in the cafe named Petite Note. Miss those days so much.

  • this song makes me comfortable always.

  • What a misogynistic song.

  • @duetothefore Actually, the song was originally written from a man's point of view, where an older man speaks to a younger fellow who's living the life the narrator once also lived but soon came to regret.

  • @engrish2006 I wasn't aware of that! It makes much more sense now.

  • @engrish2006 No surprise there. No women would ever admit that she had made the wrong choices and screwed up her life.

In fact I don't think I have ever heard of an older woman warning a young women at all. Maybe because they realize that the young women won't listen.

  • @MoshotheSpear - It "takes" a woman to admit their mistakes and many do...like me :) AND young woman DO listen, they just don't let you know it. (but eavesdrop sometime on your kids, & you'll hear Your advice come out of them)

  • ...

  • am so romantic. it hurts....

  • lol discontented morther

  • DON'T FEEL SO BAD BABY - YOU'VE NEVER BEEN TO ME EITHER!

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, and it has a great message. Love and family are more important than all the excitement and worldly experiences someone could possibly have.

  • i really like the music...and every lyrics on it i learned though i am still single..to all the mother whose never been really mothered to their child,,,i am blessed to have a caring mother
