  • Well, let's just say that was AWESOME! Anyone else try to count the trucks? =D

  • great trains

  • Really nice layout. Love the flowers and the trains. Nice video. Pete

  • how strong is that locomotive and how many acres of land is the train layout on? lol i have a HO scale train set and my conrail 8 wheeler engine can barely pull 10 boxcars

  • Freakin amazing! I know what I'm doing with my extra money once the kids are grown!!

  • If I'd known layouts like this were possible when I was a kid, I think I would have bankrupted my dad.

Very cool. Watching these on Youtube is probably the closest I'll get to having one myself, so thank you for sharing!

To people saying the video's too long or repetitive, I do understand what you mean, but the object of the video is to show the whole train length, so that's what you're going to get.

  • I see a lot of the G scale trains come with the ugly loop couplers. Do they sell these trains with the knuckle couplers? I think it just looks WAAAY better that way. My cousin used to have a G-scale train with knuckle couplers, but once I grew older, I never saw him again or his train.

  • What good is haveing a hobby and not enjoying it? Im also sure that the fun you must have is priceless, thats what its all about. Thanks for shareing and great video!

  • Impressive, but boring as it is to long :) I can't imagine what that would have cost you. Just my opinion but I think it would look better shorter without so much repetition of cars. Still a nice set, I am guessing you did this to get into the record books.

  • Pushonthebutton,

This video was made to show how many cars a USA Trains Big Boy can pull by itself without any other locomotives. Not really for a record, just for fun. And I have 50 other videos with shorter trains that you can watch for your enjoyment.

    Dennis

  • WOW this looks sooo real. awsome video! faved :)

  • A train was not supposed to block an intersection for more than twelve and a half minutes in the 50s without getting ticketed. This was considered as delaying the mail.

  • People have too much time on their hands.

  • oracle2world,

I only wish that were true! I have been so busy with our restaurants, that I haven't played with the trains for almost 10 months now. It's been work, work, work! And that's not good.

    Dennis

  • Under appreciated trains? Never fear. Send them to my back garden, where they will be loved for years. ;)

  • @oracle2world no, people have hobbies

  • Well done very impressive stuff . Big boy polled awesome.

  • that was awesome

  • Well, flatten my funnel...that has gotta be some kind of a record for longest model train!

  • During my early years with Santa Fe Railway in 1946 as an Engineer on the old Baldwin Steamers, the most I've put behind an old 2-10-10-2 Baldwin Steamer was 120 loaded coal cars thru Cajon Pass. In real life Steamers were never pushed that far, with Steamers it's not the horsepower, it's huge amount of torque Steamers rearly stall out, they just spin out and it takes a lot of sand to get them going again. I remember th old Big Boys. I love the layout, I enjoyed watching.

  • ATSF1927,

Thanks for the info. I have some videos of a 2-10-10-2 pulling loads in Cajon Pass. Pretty impressive! I also have some videos of Yellowstones pulling close to 200 ore cars in the Minnesota - Wisconsin area of the country. Some say the Yellowstones were the best. Others claim the Big Boys were superior. Side by side, the Yellowstones had a little more torque. I feel they were basically equal. I wish they would restore one of those beasts! Now that would be great!!

    Dennis

  • what got kicked up at 3:18

  • I think I see the end in sight! Nahhh, its just a flatbed...

  • 5 minutes more to go.....to long XD

  • I have the same question

  • This question has probably been asked before but how long is this track in actual feet and scale length, thanks Andrew

  • holy hell, how do you keep all of the track clean and useable?

  • WICKED AWESOME!!!

  • There's another problem brewing... You may want to rethink where you put your empties and loads! I also find it amusing that there's an SP caboose on the rear of a UP train. Good show, though.

  • People have too much time on their hands ... but great video!

  • All empties tho

  • did u hav to call it BIG BOY

  • wow! amricans trains RULES

  • Oh, if those tanks or any car contain hazmat or fuel, can't be closer than the sixth car from the engines. Also, that UP motor needs to be set out in a siding, and the switch spiked and locked forever.

  • Very impressive for a single head-end power and that many cars; not surprised you were pulling knuckles, there is a lot of draft/buff forces in that train. Being a Class I conductor, if you wanted to get prototypical with your train make-up, all your "hiwide" cars such as the flats with tractors would go on the head end; 10 loaded cars, each over 45 tons make up your head 10 cars, then the rest is up to you. if you run DP on the rear, make the last 10 cars loads over 45 tons. Lol nerd moment.

  • Can i buy your back yard?

  • how money did you spend?

  • alot of rolling money there

  • In reality 1 Big Boy locomotive can pull a train 5 miles long.

  • WhyAskQuestions,

In reality, there is no documentation of any Big Boy ever pulling a train that was over 2.25 miles long. And that Big Boy was really pushing to make that. So I highly doubt that these monsters could pull a 5 mile train.

    Dennis

  • @dennissirrine i don't think i have ever heard of any train pulling more then a mile length worth of cars

  • @dennissirrine The big boy will pull a 5 mile train only if it's on a flat level track

  • Passenger: Watch out dead grasshopper on the rails

    Driver: Oh mother of purl

    All: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

    Girl: Huh!!! Am I dead

    Man: No

girl: Oh ok Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh why am I bleeding

Man: Oh a grasshopper died on the rails and we hit it a 2 freaking miles a hour

Girl: Oh you don't say huh!!!!!

  • Dear santa...

  • is itg-scale or HO

  • Dam i want this =< but being poor won't help

  • Very nice, I'm sure the kids love it and know there's alot of work done to achieve that. From what little can be seen in the vid, the garden truly makes it realistic. How many times can you run like that before the battery needs recharging? Is using DC advantageous over AC? Nice job.

  • Your shipment of WIN has arrived...

  • very impressive, although I'd hate to get stuck at a crossing.

  • holy shit....

  • Hello, wow! That is so huge and I wonder how much is all that worth? Looked like about over $10,000?

  • Wow! It goes on forever! This is an amazing video!

  • That train is easily 4 times longer than the track I have in my backyard.

  • Is the weight of the cars to scale with the actual sized cars?

  • debowh,

No, it is not the same as the real thing, but pretty close.

    Dennis

  • @dennissirrine hi just wondering what the length of your main line is ?

  • 3:53

    OMG it ends?

  • I would love to have one of these my backyard!

  • just think if this whole train derailed.

  • What is the max grade any train can pull

also how would you calculate grade ?

  • wow this is got to be expensive!!

  • Will give you hours of fun if you ever pass an opposing point!

  • That was possibly the longest mold rail line in history!!!

  • so im 135 pounds so if i could make a car that can support my weight and i hook it up to tha big boy could it possibly pull me

  • thank you sir for your help i will look it up and keep on going with my g scale. one more question i have a bachman train set what would be the next step for a locomotive i only have 3 cars the tender, mailcar and passenger

  • dadhernandez1,

What ever you can afford would be just fine. Most any locomotive will be able to pull 3 trains with no problems.

    Dennis

  • could you tell me where i can get tracks for g scale that are cheap im just a teenager and dont have that much money to spend and ebay is really hard to get them expecially when the owner is betting me up so if you have a tip on where to get supplies i would thank you allot my dad emailis dadhernandez22@yahoo.com thanks for your time

  • dadhernandez1,

Try RLD Hobbies. You can look them up on Goggle.com. Robby is the owner and he always gives me great prices. But please be award, that G gauge track is not cheap anymore. But he has the best price of anyone in the U.S.

    Dennis

  • 152 carts OMG and 1 train

  • The best train set ever. i wish i had a train set. i don't even have one small set!!!!!

  • why has no one made a mini railway gun? it seems like a good astetic affect. fyi i am 13 my grammer isn't "that" good

  • I only Counted 151, I may Have made a Mistake but It doesnt Really Affect it

  • Hey, for those out side trains, do you put a cover over it when it rains?

  • 154 smarts!!!! And I counted, but nice layout.

  • i found it for 4 000 000 but i dont have place for him :)

  • it could pull me

  • Hey Denise, tell me about the quality in the engine loco. its easy to get the spares? you said about the resistance against snow wind rain, but it's easy to make some maintenance ? thanks .. saludos.

  • cool man cool

  • the wheel friction on this must be phenomenal!

  • nice g scale i think it was about 1.30 miles long

  • next time put some of you AC's in mid train or on the rear (or both), that'll solve your couple problem. Sounds like you are experiencing real world train handling challenges.

  • tmlafrance,

If I put mid-train or rear-train helpers in the mix, then I defeat the purpose of having only (1) locomotive pulling this monster. I was trying to figure out a way to add more cars with just the Big Boy pulling everything. And I think I have. I will try pulling 180 cars this coming Fall using an idea I have. If it works, I will let everyone know how I did it.

    Dennis

  • @dennissirrine I get that with the steam engine. I was speaking only to the diesels. I look forward to your next product.

  • How many kilograms of force you need to move these cars?

  • sorrydennis forgot to give ya my numbers 15168056816 or 12153173281

  • hi great um in dream land but i did not see any maintance equitment out there um a builder of that stuff railcranes tiecranes hirailtrucks railspikers ballistspreaders dozers loaders all painted and lettered to your theam all move like real thing and are true to scale um not a big company but take on a few cliants every few months please contact love to hear u would be shocked at my talent again unbelive set up

  • what happens if it rains

  • Javiergueritoracadam,

If it rains, the train just keeps on going. No problems whatsoever. These G scale trains are made to run in the rain, sun, wind and snow. In fact, I have run my trains many times in the rain. They look so realistically when you did that too! Go to LGB's website, and they show a locomotive being dunked in a pool of water, and then coming out and running. Pretty Cool!

    Dennis

  • @dennissirrine Sweet thats awsome

  • i like the big boy but im thinking of getting bnsf santa fe's and bn engines from - only trains.com

  • man you must have a ton of cash, i was just on usa's site and as much as i want all of it, one SD70 Alone if very pricey

  • How long did it take you to set up a train with that many cars on it?

  • Nice!!! I'm tryin to get started in Gscale... what do you reccommend?

  • PowerSports420,

Give me a call and I can go over things with you. What you need will take up more space than we are allow to you on YouTube. My cell number is 480-620-9459.

    Thanks,

    Dennis

  • This is one "AWESOME" engine. Thanks for sharing a really "GREAT" video. If you don't mind my asking, how much does this engine cost? Thank you.

  • 1944wabash,

A USA Trains Big Boy costs around $3,500.00. It is one of the best locomotives in the G scale market.

    Dennis

  • @dennissirrine you want the best? get MTH big boy. its way better and cheaper!

  • 1944wabash,

I have one and it can't even pull 100 cars with metal wheels and Kadee couplers. I even tried Accucrafts brass Big Boy and it had a hard time pulling 90 cars. USA Trains Big Boy is the clear winner in pulling power! It pulled the 151 cars in the video, and I am confident it can pull 175 cars. I will try 175 cars this coming Fall, 2011.

    Dennis

  • Big Boy for president!!

Question what keeps cars in the middle of the train from being ripped off the rails on the sharp turns with the strong tensile forces?

  • dizzleblackizzle,

First of all, I am running on 30' diameter curves which is very prototypical with full size trains. And I also use ball-bearing metal wheels which reduces the drag on the wheel flanges. And I installed Kadee coupleers on each cars to keep the center of gravity low to the track. and Kadee couplers on each car which adds weight to each car and keeps the center of gravity low to the track.

    Dennis

  • Big Boy for president!!

  • Dude,,,if one of the cars was to derail, that would take forever to set the train up again lol

  • My only question is, wouldnt it be a smarter idea to take off 2 of the 6 Dash 9's from the head and place them in the back to prevent any possible derailment? Idk. Maybe the physics of model trains is not necessarily similar to that of the real thing, but hey, it works doesnt it?

  • Are you using track power or battery power?

  • can ya do that in reverse

  • Dennis, congrats on a great vid of some fantastic equipment AND a very nice layout.

Heck, just to get 152 cars in one place at one time is a huge accomplishment IMO, never mind having them pulled by one loco....even if it IS a Big Boy !!!

  • Have you ever had a long train pulled around a curve and have he middel of the train just give out and fly off the rails because too many cars and soo much power on the locomotive...cause I know that has happened to me on to many times!

  • @BTCRAIL101FILMS a weight in the bottom of the trucks/wagons/cars should solve that problem. If it's a tight curve. It's more liable to happen.

  • what are those on the flat beds at 3:32?

  • Heroduothecomedian,

Those are locomotives that are used in steel plants to move the molten ore around. LGB used to manufacture those cars a long time ago. I have 7 of those cars and really like them!

  • That's the Big Boy for ya.

  • That bog boy must of cost a fortune I can barley afford a $250 engine

  • Not kidding that has enough power to pull you along.

Can't wait to finish my o gauge live steam challenger. I have done the maths and it has enought power in theory to pull 563LB of train. Even at 450lb that is over 200 hopper wagons! ; )

  • Joking aside this has enough power to pull a person.

Can't wait until i finish my o gauge live steam challenger. I have done the math and it should theoretically pull 563lb of train if it has enought traction. Even if this dropps to 450 that is over 200 cars it can pull!

  • Hate to tell you this, but most of those hoppers and such are unloaded (kinda seems like cheating to me). Have you ever tried this with loaded cars?

In any case, it's very impressive to watch, and a good video all around.

  • Shipwright1918,

Very few individuals ever fill their Hoppers with real loads. It's not practica because of the weightl. Most people use a simulated fake coal load that's made out of Styrofoam which gives the appearance of being filled with real material. In Fact, in all of the years I have been in G scale, I have only seen one person who uses real loads in their Hopper Cars. And he was only able to pull about 15 to 16 Hoppers because of the weight.

    Dennis

  • youre kiddin me right? 3.3 thousand of dollars for a big boy? Then that loc must be very very good.. I, at first, thought it was just luck to pull those 152 wagons, but damn, if that loc is 3.3 thousand at the cheapest, then im impressed.. Actually, do you have more train vids, for example passenger trains, and then especially long passenger trains?

Greetings from the netherlands, from mara

  • msp201985,

I am getting ready to shoot a lot more videos in the month of March. That is the best month here in the Phoenix area for videos because the weather and the sunlight are perfect. So check back in April and I should have many more new videos to see.

    Dennis

  • At 2.30 I was starting to think this was a looped video. It just goes on!

  • imagine this in the real world de-railing

  • Is the "G" scale the same as a "1" scale. I'm sorry if that seems ignorant, I'm trying to look up some facts.

  • @EdgertonLive "G scale" doesn't always refer to the actual scale of the trains, but rather the gauge, G-gauge, or #1-gauge, which is 45 mm between the rails. An advantage about G-gauge is that it can model in many different scales, which represent diverse prototypes' actual track gauge.

  • needs some graffiti

  • DCS?

  • FireAlarmMan458,

This Big Boy is battery powered

    Dennis

  • OOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMGGGGGGGGG..!!!!!!!!!!

I think You got a big garden :)

  • It looks very life-like!

  • I'm just curious to know. How much are the G Scale Big Boys??

  • phllcm3,

The cheapest I have seen a brand new USA Train Big Boy is $3,300.00. You can pick up a used one for a lot cheaper, but you really don't know what you are getting, so be careful!

    Dennis

  • what kinda of mantinence is needed considering the railway is outside? i would imagine rain is a problem?

  • relztem3,

There is maintenance involved with an outdoor railroad. But if you design it correctly, you can eliminate 90% of the problems. And these trains are made to run in the rain with no problems. Go to YouTube and there are several videos that show trains running in the rain.

    Dennis

  • what company do you buy your trains and cars from

  • shorty9754,

Mostly USA Trains because they are the BEST! I also buy some Aristo-Craft locomotives only because Aristo-Craft doesn't make the same locomotives that USA Trains makes. I purchase most of my stuff from RLD Hobbies. Ask for Robbie. They are a great company with really great prices! They are located in Illinois somewhere. You can Goggle them to get their phone number and address..

    Dennis

  • Wish I Could See This Live!!!! I Love It

  • OH!!!! BTW Fantastic!! job!! Sir

  • do you have an airiel shot of the layout??

  • jwtimberwolf,

No I don't. I guess I really should have one. That would be really cool. I will see what I can do about that.

    Dennis Sirrine

  • Dennis, this is, as others have stated..... INCREDIBLE !

I sent an email last night asking your opinion on loco and car brand.... looks like you favor USA Trains....

What brand of track did/do you use ?

  • Where do you get these trains?

  • touch2ndgen,

Most are from USA Trains. In my opinion, they are the best!

  • i only counted 141 counting the engine crud, but cool video

  • nascarmonsterjamfan,

I just watched this video 2 times and counted the cars each time. And there are 151 cars being pulled by the Big Boy, not 141 as you claim.

    Dennis Sirrine

  • a solution to your coupler problem could be trying the 'loop and pin' system used by LGB and those cheap plastic holiday train sets.

  • This is beyond belief! Just watching this video, my son is going crazy. He loves trains and little does he know (he's 2 and a half right now) that tomorrow he's getting a G-Scale train from Santa! I'm about to go upstairs and put it together around the tree. Anyway, this is an amazing video of an absolutely astounding train. I mean, the fact that you have 152 cars and accessories to make the train is one thing but you have the track for it too! Congratulations and Happy Holidays to everyone.

  • What is the average cost per car?

  • TheRcfanatic,

The rolling stock on this train range in price from $49 to $165. Average cost of the cars would probably be around $65.

    Dennis

  • @dennissirrine Wow so that would be like 12K just for the train. Was this like a child hood dream of yours or what becuase that is awsome.

  • could I have an estimate to how much it costs to put the layout in your yard? (not counting the trains)

  • multibulss6666,

I don't know. I didn't keep track of how much I spent. I knew what I wanted and just started building it. But I can tell you this, it was a lot!

    Dennis

  • I won't sleep tonight, I'll be dreaming of cars, cars and more cars. Awesome!

  • Ok ok I'll admit I can't count as well as I thought I could lol

  • OK now load those hoppers with sand and do it again :D

  • Comment removed

  • Keep plenty of spare engine parts handy, you'll need them. :)

  • Dennis, what batteries are you using and who did you purchase them from?

    Rick

  • Dennis, what kind of batteries are you using and where did you get them from?

    Rick

  • WOW THATS LONG

  • This layout must be omgwtfbbq big

  • My favorite part was when the cars were rolling by =D

  • Wow! Thanks for sharing! Did I see some reading, northern and blue mountain rr coal hoppers??

  • To have that much space and so many G size trains..Would clasify as a dream layout...

  • That is actually how long the trains the REAL big boy pulled!

  • raymondleeleggs,

Yes I know it's the same. And now that the railroad is up and going from being down during the summertime, we are going to try and pull 190 cars with the Big Boy. The reason we are trying is because the Big Boy seemed to pull those 152 cars without much trouble. So we are going for 190 cars!

    Dennis

  • @raymondleeleggs thats a long time waiting at the railroad crossing:P

  • What ever happened to distributed power? I bet you could reduce the amount of diesels you used at the end by 2 or 3 if you spread out the power. Maybe 2 in the front, 1 mid train, and 1 end of train loco. It's cool how that Big Boy could pull that amount of weight though! Really reflects the real UP beast's power.

  • themattrat1995,

I really didn't need all of those diesels to pull those cars. It was more for show than anything else. I know three diesels could have easily pull those 152 cars. And maybe even two, I don't know.

And now that the railroad is back up and going for the new season, I am going to try 175 to 195 cars for the Big Boy to pull. Let's see what happens!!!

    Stay in Touch Guys . . . . . . . . .

I will keep everyone posted for a new pull record.

    Dennis Sirrine

  • @dennissirrine ohh, the way you made it sound from the video it was the amount NEEDED to pull the 152 haha

  • @themattrat1995 They do that all the time on the Canadian Pacific Intermodal trains. Love to see them!

  • @UAL2842 Yes I love them too! CP seems to do that more and more these days too.

  • Impressive!

  • I'm also shocked that this didn't put any strain on the locomotive.

  • adfgfds,

It could have put a strain on the locomotive, but I have no idea. It seemed to work it's way around the layout without much trouble.

    Dennis
