Not true. I am from jamaica. We speak patois. Gullah is an african language and culture. Patois in many ways is the end result of combining of english and gullah.
@lilwayneballa10 younger jamaicans might spell that way like my cousins. That would be a more phonetically way of writing. If it's all understood it's all good as far as I am concerned. Google patois and you will see.
Furthermore, when West Africans learn English (because English is a common language to learn) they end up sounding very Jamaican in a sense. They end up speaking a patois. I saw a documentary about an isolated island off the coast of the American Carolinas that retains Gullah culture.
They name their children after the days of the week, make rice baskets called fannas. Some gullah descendants went to west africa and cried upon hearing the language spoke since it reminded them of their mother whom they always thought was odd and different than the rest of the americans and america they grew up with. They then understood the connection. Gullah culture persisted since they were isolated from racism and the oppresive mainland slave culture.
@frecksz Really? My parents have a Chinese-Jamaican friend back home. I went to church with a elderly Chinese-Jamaican woman when I was a kid. I can understand a non-Jamaican being surprised but not a Jamaican like yaself frecksz?
@steeltownbrown52 Well i live in canada so i guess its a sort of social stagnation. When im in a canadian setting and all of a sudden a white or asian person comes up to me and starts speaking jamaican, it always catches me off guard. lol so its not like i think its impossible but i just meant its uncommon.
@frecksz If it's in Canada, then ya might question it cause there is a lot of JaFakins out there. They'll try and fit in with their Jamaican friends or spouse to make them feel comfortable to speak patois. Most Jamaican people in Canada won't speak patois to me cause I don't speak it back(I understand it tho). Just kinda irritates me("you're too light-skinned to be Jamaican") that there are people out there that think Jamaica is a strictly a black country.
Ive lived in Jamaica (Yaard) most my life(26 of 29) and this a typical Jamaican-Chinese family......There is a large mixed-society in Jamaica especially Chinese,Indian and Jewish eventhough its hardly known,if you travel and actually see Kingston or Mo-Bay even through to rural areas like Mandeville and Ochi youll see its a real "mixing-pot" of ethnicities.
omg thats is exactly what my mom says word fi word my mother grandparents are from india and migrated to jamaica and my grandfather is jamaican indian and chinese you are most definately right about a mix-society
Do they speak Mandarin? Usually, the migrants to the Caribbean-were poor, outsiders, not really classed as 'Indian' or 'Chinese' by ruling groups (Brahmins, or Northern Han Chinese. Hence, the term coolies and, for the 'African', 'slave'. Like Africans, they perhaps no lill abt their identiy, speak Patios & English, & giv nuff respect to Jesus. Nice, lovely family, though.
the Chinese in Jamaica do speak Hakka but I am black and don't speak a word of it yet i understood them. I wonder why? In Jamaica everyone speak patois to some degree
They are not speaking Hakka right now in this video.....they are speaking patois/English. Majority of the Chinese Jamican population don't speak Hakka amymore......only the old generation (grand parents etc..can still speak........it's a beautiful language though and I am lucky that my grandmother continued to speak to us in Hakka....
yea dont worry i kno..but some idiot thought they were speaking Hakka in this video... i guess because he/ he couldn't undertand them? I was just sayin i undertsood everyword because they werent speaking Hakka. This is an amazing video though best on youtube
Went to St Georges College in Kingston in the 1960s, lots of chinese students back then. Many migrated to Canada and are doing great. I love Jamaican-Chinese.
love it. i grew up with many jamaican chinese. believe it or not, it did not really occured to me they were until i look back. you see it was not a big deal americans should learn from it. all people have something to say and something to contribute if you level the playing field america will only benifit - genius comes in all colours
these is the type of chiny ppl i like. too much of them go on like pawpers. live a little man. c them laughing and enjoying themselves. my best frined is chinese and her parent go on dont even dress up.. damn. and some of these ppl are born in china u hear their mixed accent.
most if not all jamaican chinese have real strong full jamaican accents.
dat idiot bwoy who chat say, dem nah Jamaican, don know wha him a chat. As an African Chinese Jamaican myself, I can most definitely say they are Jamaicans. Idiot bwoy get pon an airplane travel to Jamaica and see for your self. De world full of, too many ras ignorant jackass (people) dem.
you are one fucking idiot if you gonna tell the tuber they not chinese when am almost sure this is a personal video... like you would know. dwl who's the dumbass!!? you! i am born raised and living in ja and i know a chiny and a fili when i see one. fucking clown
HOLY SHIT...I can hear those damn crickets..i havent heard those in sooo long b..nice family though...the women have that st andrew accent...sounds exactly like my grandma lol
A lot of Asians living all over the world prefer to stick to their own kind but even famous people with Jamaican backgrounds who are black have at least Asian (Chinese) grandparents if not great-grandparents.
Tyson Beckford, Naomi Campbell and even, believe it or not, Grace Jones! Then you have to factor in the ones who are NOT famous.
