At that time they more or less were because they were a handful of kingdoms and even under one king they had no standing army, and did not fare well when vikings came raiding. It wasn't until Alfred the Great that that started to turn around.

As a Dane it's quite funny the hear this Hellish description of the Nordic countries in the first part of the video.

There's no 'eternal cold' here, actually the average temperature during the viking age was higher that it is today. Analyzing Greenlands icecore, it has been determined that - periodically - we had the same climate as Central Europe today.

Greenland was indeed green in those days, the vikings didn't call it that because they were colorblind :)

Funny to think that had they had lost in 1066,we might still be able to speak directly to each others to some degree. But their sending E "underground" for 300 years along with the great vowel shift ( "French" folk trying to speak E? :o) ) "ruined" a lot. But still the links between E and D (+S+N) are very deep & many.

recent DNA testing reveals that the only "genuine" English in England are Welsh...most English today are more German than anything else.

You're mixing up British and 'English' - as in the only genuine 'British' in Britain are the Welsh.

The only genuine 'English' are ' the modern day English' and they are a mixture of Germanic,Celtic & Scandinavian stock. If you can find me an Anglo Saxon ill call you a liar ;)

Yes, but we are also Germanic - NB. Not German! Our languages here are so full of links with E that you would be amazed. So E is still a very easy language for us to learn,as we more or less get "half" of the basics for free. Angeln from where the Angles came ( and are named after) is a peninsula on the East coast of Southern Jutland, just South of the present day Danish- German border, but orig. part of "Denmark". Maybe the term "South Danes" in Beowulf refers to these people?

The language that the Angles spoke was prob. a more Northerly or even North Germanic variant

of the Germanic language, which had started to split up in its 3 main branches only a few centuries

earlier. At least there seems to be lacking some sort of intermediary betweeen G & D.

Also G underwent certain shifts that neither E nor D did, so many features are still more alike, even

if Saxon ( and later Low German) and E are W. Germanic lang.s orig.

And the clash and later fusion between OE & OD (Norse) that became Middle E seems to have

almost made E jump branch from WG to "NG" - at least partially ( much simpler grammar

with far fewer inflections & cases and prepositions instead of cases, word order giving meaning (analytical) etc. Maybe that also rubbed off on us over here? Icelandic (closely rel. to Norse & OE is still far more complex grammatically - as is German btw. ).

Recent evidence suggest the English DNA is just as Celtic as the Welsh, with theories that the Anglo-Saxons merely took over the ruling class, however there's evidence suggesting the Anglo-Saxons wiped out the Britons in what is now England. My view is that we are probably half and half. The term Anglo-Saxon to me means Saxons of England, England being named after the Angles (a Saxon tribe themselves) but probably having a good share of Britons as well as Angles. Anglo-Celts would be more apt.

Your probably right, but the Saxons done alot more for England than the Celts. The Celts who did live here under Saxon rule integrated sooner or later anyway, so they were Celts by birth but they would of spoke Saxon with an accent, called themselves Angelfolc (English) and basically turned into Saxons. The other Celts just buggered off to Wales and Cornwall. In the former Kingdom of Wessex there are still alot of Ethnic English there (people with direct Saxon roots)

Haha!! To the point. Well this is debateable. The myth is that the Anglo-Saxons invaded and brutilised the Britons, other theories suggest it was a gradual migration. Which ever it is the chances are we are a bit of both!

Some conclusions include:

1. It was difficult to separate the Angle Saxon blood lines of eastern and southern from the Scandinavian and German blood lines because they are too closely matched.

2. There was a clear separation of northern and western Celtic bloodline from the Angle Saxons of the Southern and Eastern counties.

If you want to get the correct DNA evidence of the Blood of the English, take your samples before the 1700's and before the mass migration to the current US and Australia.

You got to consider how many English men migrated out of England in those times and most of them migrated from southern and eastern England. With the modern UK today, it leaves lots of room to comingle with British blood. To find true English, blood, whu dont they test the Million of americans who have Anglo-Saxon roots who were of the middle class folks; noting they migrated out of England at that time IT WAS CALLED England for the country of the Anglos and Saxons

The Saxons ( and pointing them out directly) were very prominant tribe unlike the rest of Germania subdueing to the Romans. If there is a true ethnic German to what I believe, no offense to any fellow Englishman and to my own background, but the Saxons were true ethnic Germans (or Ethnic English to which I believe assimulation of Germanic tribes) than the continental cousins during that time.
