I'll be driving by the Grapevine this summer to get to my family in Sacramento. There are a few regular stops we used to take going from San Diego to Penn Valley, and this is one of them. Kinda nostalgic.
when we were on our way to disneyland... we were on the grapevine and it started to snow. We were lucky they didnt close it down. BTw it was Spring time!
@innovationsurvival yeah thats the problem with videos that are fast forwarded. it doesnt show the blur that the human eye would see and the camera would catch. its only after you hit 75-80 miles per hour that a camera starts to fall behind.
I had my campershell blow off one night just as I crested a hill. I pulled over and backed up to retrieve it and then BAM! A car coming over the hill drove through it like a fat kid smacking a Pinata. It can get real windy at times.
The desert you remember was a marsh in the early 1900s. In some places, you could drill down a few feet and water shot up about two feet. There was a 200 square mile lake around Kettleman City that is now gone, along with Lake Buena Vista.
Finally, the USA's largest oil spill occurred about 30 miles away from the bottom of the Grapevine
See my "Innovation in Science" YouTube video for details on that fascinating story.
I drive from S.F. to S.D. twice a year & I'm always taken back in awe as I come out of the grapevine heading home & viewing the vastness of CA99 & I5 continue up the Golden State!

@innovationsurvival Really hope it doesn't happen again. Thats the only way to get to disneyland. lol. I guess if you fly it would be different. But driving is always funner.
Damn, that's a lot of trucks. Is there a specific sign stating that they aren't allowed in the far left lane? Because I'm seeing a shockingly low level of lane hogging by these guys.
I could be wrong, but, in normal circumstances, I believe trucks have to drive in the right two lanes by law, passing into the right-most of the two only to pass another slower truck. But then, there are always max surprises - aren't there?
Sorry for the delay, but YouTube had response posting problems. My camera is a Sony DCR-HC48. It's good, but strong light really helps. You have some nice videos yourself BTW.....
Actually, I have a 1/3rd or so HD video camera. YouTube's definition od HD is not really 1080x1080.....
Glad you like it. I have the descent footage but just have not had time to post it. I started at the truck brake check area and ended at the Valencia In-N-Out Burger off Lyons avenue.
Looks like alot of people were hauling more ass than you up the hill haha. They must've been going like 400 mph.

@TrinityWilderness1 Well, I was doing the limit (60 or so) and the ascent is played at 5X speed. The math is fairly straightforward.
