That maximum force is dependent on the terminal velocity of the cat--(velocity attained before air resistance nullifies gravitational acceleration). It was shown that for the average cat, terminal velocity is reached from around 7 stories. Of course, what the cat lands ON makes a big difference too. Concrete = ouch.

cats can survive most falls 30+ feet. the higher they fall, the safer they are. Once they break the gravitational acceleration their bodies relax (b/c it no longer feels like their accelerating as they fall so theyre not tense). from there its easy for them to spread themselves out, which slows how fast their falling. also their bodies allow them to absorb the impact as well. physics is fun, but its still amazing to watch this stuff happen
