I like what climbing0by says. The groups that stay true to their artistic groove are the ones who succeed. Glad they focus on how THEY want to express their music.
I THINK THE LAST FEW EPISODES INCLUDING THIS ONE,THE PRODUCERS TOLD THE JUDGES TO NOT SHOW SO MUCH FAVORITISM TOWARDS COMMITED. SO THAT WAY THE OTHER CONTESTANTS FELT AS IF THEY HAD A CHANCE,WHICH THEY NEVER DID LOL. BUT SHAWN ALWAYS HAD MUSICAL ORGASMS OVER THEIR SINGING.I KNOW I DID LMFAO:]
@jezyca126 That's exactly right. I understand the judges point that maybe committed didn't get the "spirit" of the song, but HOLY CRAP!!!!!! That arrangement was OFF THE HOOK difficult and artful. That at least needed to be stated more clearly. Ben said it great by stating that they didn't need to go all "post doctorate" on the song. But they were clearly operating on orders to tone down the love on these guys.
@jezyca126 I agree with you 100%. I feel that SCS did well but this was so clearly won quite early on by Committed and they just couldn't catch up. In fact the only song I didn't like much was Joy to the World that they did. I really loved how SCS did their Old Lang Syne and they actually managed a higher score than Committed with that one.
I don't know what was wrong with the judges on this episode other than them trying 2 make the other contestants feel better & like they had a chance IMO!!!
technically & musically almost flawless, but i agree w/ judges. more over, i think song choice made it a weaker performance to the judges/masses. not the most crowd-pleasing "rock" song (to intrigue non-musicians in TV land). though they succeeded w/ other tunes, something just felt awkward and uncomfortable about their translation of Sting & The Police into R&B/Soul. And their vocal jazz flares felt random/arbitrary in this performance. that said, a crown still well-deserved.
I kind of see the judges' point--it had more of a Puffy "I'll Be Missin' You" feel than a Police "Every Breath You Take" feel. And I could have done without the ending chord and scats. I still loved their rendition, though.
I think Committed's harmonies were great on this song (as always). I think both song arrangements on this episode were simple compared their first two performances - I still don't know whether that was good or bad. I think the judges had a somewhat valid point that this song didn't embody "rock", but the hidden objective of their review was to keep the guys humble and reaching. This is the judges formula for delivery: harmony, arrangement, performance/energy, and (apparently) genre integrity
Judges are smoking CracK!!!! Commited's version of this song is sick. Just because you change the mood of this song doesn't make it bad... Just like Mandy Moore's Umbrella.
@climbingc0by You can't take a cold, disturbed song and try to make it happy and upbeat. I disagree with you. Just because they sound beautiful doesn't mean the actual meaning of the song wasn't altered.
@lakers1drew I understand that if the lyrics don't fit but they do. If someone has never heard the song before heard this version even with the lyrics, it wouldn't be cold and disturbing. Kind of like How Umbrella flipped it from a R&B Pop song to a sentimental ballad or Andrew Garcia's version of straight up. Maybe its harder to swallow because its such a classic. I thought it was funny how they said they didnt like the arrangement.... Which virtually sounded the same as the original.
No one was saying it was bad, it just wasn't rock, and rock is what the judges wanted to hear. A capella bands have to be extremely versatile to thrive, and while Committed is fantastic (and in my opinion, deserved to win it all), they didn't show much versatility.

@StarbaseSierra1754 Thanks for mentioning the bass. That dude is SICK! Best bass singer in the competition and it wasn't even close.

@shawnuel I dunno, Jerry Lawson's bass was outstanding, too.
StarbaseSierra1754 9 months ago
@StarbaseSierra1754 He was good, but Committed's bass was SOOOOOO resonant. His tone set him apart for me.

It wasn't my favorite by them. This was supposed to be rock and it wasn't. Good performance of course, but...eh. Didn't feel anything from it.

Tough criticism, but as usual the judges were pretty spot on in assessment. This is more R&B than Rock. Still great though.
