Is there a writeup of this swap somewhere? A v8 sho showed up in my town for a pretty nice price but I don't want to buy it if its not a feasible swap, as I absolutely hate driving automatics.
@bhshfb You'll find some stuff on shoforum.com but I never did a full write-up. It isn't for the faint of heart and isn't easy but yes I would do it all over again.
nice cars and a good swap. but i thought the v8 SHO 's run better then even the faster 15.0. i thought they were 14 second cars bone stock with a auto tranny.
In good air the "freak" stock V8 SHO's are high 14 second cars. Probably 25% of them fall into that category. Most ATX's (probably 50%)are low 15's with good air; and the slugs are high 15's. Some of it is always the driver and launch technique but the launch is maybe good for a few tenths.
On these runs the air was quite bad. Over 90 degrees mid afternoon mid range barometer but terrible high humidity. The "freak" cars were running 15.3 and 15.4. Everyone was about .5 slow
@ven0msho no shit! thats suprising to me! i always wanted to run 1 in my 03 cadillac dts that ran high 14s stock. i respect the SHO and always have but hearing that makes me like the v6 SHO even better. in the early 90s my friend had a beautiful "royal"blue auto sho im thinkin like a 93,94 and it was quick enuff to earn a reputaion around our hood. he raced a modified 80's turbo 2.2 dodge daytona for supremecy of the fwd's and was neck and neck until he lost control and totaled it!awsome car tho

Well stock they come with a 4 speed ATX only. None of the mods to either of these cars were power adders to the motors. So the drivelines are far from stock as it is an extensive mod to put the Manual in there.
Parts were around 2K (1K for the axles) Time accounting - I have no idea. I did this over about two years in my garage with no lift. With the knowledge I have now, and a lift I would estimate 60 hours of labor.
Definitely not right. They are both pretty much same but SHO has advantage. Is your car in a top shape or your trans barely shifts and your oil has 30K miles on it?
SHOs are awesome cars. I have a 94 SHO and a 98. They are one of a kind cars. Sure they won't beat a new Hemi Charger, but they are fast and fun to drive. Hell back when they came out in 89, the only 4 door car that was faster than them was the M5 BMW and it cost twice as much.
I assume you are thinking of the Ford MTX-75 used inthe Contour's. Neither of these cars use that MTX. Mine uses the Mazda 6 tranny (A65M-R), and is going to roll 30K on the swap yet this month. I beat on the thing daily on my drive to work. The tranny and cutstom Axles has been real troopers. But that 90W gear oil rows like sludge when it is 10 degrees out like it was this morning. It loosens up fairly quick but the first couple shifts are very stiff.
That video was with TERRIBLE atmospheric conditions (95 degrees and sticky July humidity). I will get the car up to Lapeer this fall and hope to be around 14.6 with good air. Due to gearing and weight reduction alone it accounts for about .4 seconds ET, then add in the extra power delivery due to lower parasitic losses in the transmission and it should more than offset the edge an ATX has off the line.
I wouldn't beat myself up too bad. I was actually able to see the numbers at the end of the run. You can't say the same thing for most drag vids on youtube.
i have a 97 sho v8, how in the world did they get a stick in that thing? i would love to convert mine to stick!!! is there any way that i can contact him?

How is the MTX holding up? It seems to die with 3.0 V6 or 2.3 I4 power, much less a Yamaha V8.
