Even when joined, they are living tissue - like a trasplanted heart, eye, etc. Until transplanted, they are just living tissue. An in vitro (outside the body) fertilization is living tissue, not a life but a potential life. When implanted in the womb, THEN it is viable. Disagree? Then let's shut down every fertility clinic - let's think about what we're doing here!
As a molecular biochemist, I would just like to say that you guys are so ignorant of this field that you can't come close making RATIONAL sense. Just because all the successful research was in proteins does not mean that we should shy away from the VAST potential of RNA enzymatics, and the same applies here. Please, if you do not have a background in this field, do not presume to have an educated opinion on this subject, and most definitely do not take another's because "they told you to."

Actually, many of us DO understand this. But perhaps you should reconsider your own assumption that "maximum malleability" (i.e., "totipotency") is always a good thing. Ironically, the totipotency of embrionic cells is precicely the property that renders them UNUSABLE in any treatment thus far.
