By brushes I guess you mean the branches that grow? Draw whatever design you want in either illustrator or Photoshop or whatever. I made one branch with 3 stems. Take that in after effect start with a mask and grow it, as you come to the next stem, start a new mask. So you'll have about 3 or more masks. Then duplicate the entire branch in size and rotation. So you'll actually have the same one branch with 3 stems 6 times playing at different times and speeds. That's it.
hey dude, this is cool! i was wondering, did you just make it or is there like a concept/meaning behind this? or were you just experimenting with colors and shapes and such? btw, can you give me some feedbacks on my stuff too?
It was a sample animation made for a bid to win a commercial contract. The contract was not won because it didn't have enough depth which is why once I figured out to create the depth. I created the response video above(just for me). I doubt i will, but if i went back and added the depth to this video, it would look much cooler.
We are looking for new motion artist for 20Ent message me back.

Do you know of any tutorials to go through this process step by step using Photoshop CS4? I want to learn how to make swirls grow.
Nice work btw.

The animation would be done in after effects. Do you have an example?

No I don't. Thanks.
