  • "Britain's Got Talent"

  • I didn't mean to suggest it was a good thing. Good is bad/ love is hate/ slavery is freedom---it's a fine line between rooting for an underdog and elevating the lowest thing (ugly/ stupid/ character-less/ non-nice/ etc--- in order to invert values, which is the real goal of so many shows. Everything is like Jerry Springer. It's sad. There used to be elevating things to do, to watch. All college is about that. Books aren't Shakespeare, but about how oppressed people are, and so on.

  • And P.S., not to worry. I'm a girl. I also think Susan Boyle sings just fine. Still, they play it up like more of the Ugly Betty syndrome, like I said. Bad is good. Fat is healthy. Stupid is smart. Love is hate. If you listen carefully, you can hear George Orwell screaming, "I told you so."

  • very insightful. I completely agree, it's a paradoxical thing. True paradox is a most-sought-after media vehicle, and hard to find, much like a kid genius. But its good for hella ratings, people love an underdog, or unlikely hero. Take the Red Sox winning the world series; people were nuts. Imagine if Detroit made it to the super bowl, everyone would be talking about it. It's a universal theme, to want to be unique and shatter the status quo. Never really happens, but everyone loves to dream.

  • Yeah, lol. You're more than pretty. You're super-cute, ramzpaul. With and without the facial hair. And funny, too.

  • It's like that tv show, Ugly Betty. The whole point of everything is how great it is to be ugly. An inversion of beauty as good. The theme is everywhere.

  • cool... does that mean I am now pretty?

  • @westchesterny /watch?v=qGX0_0VL06U

  • Elaine Page and Paul Potts want to sing a duet with her.Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber want's to cast her in one of his musicals,I respect their opinions more than yours. You are the patronizer.

  • I think you're judging yourself here instead.

  • You underestimate her voice somewhat, but certainly the response is out of all proportion, and the reasons are as you state. But - did she engineer this? With little time on stage before singing, she packed in that outrageous hip swirl + aspirations to Elaine Page? Could she have picked a worse dress? She's not necessarily the unknowing victim of exploitation: perhaps she's getting her own back. And the media presumes "they mocked her all her life" - where'd that info come from? It's bull.

  • Bravo Susan, you've really taught us something very special about what's inside each and every one of us if only we have the courage to dare to dream.

I just admire her so much for getting out of bed every day and somehow managing to cope with looking like that.

  • This is the most insightful analysis of the Susan Boyle phenomenon I have heard on the internet.

  • satire...

  • I are mistaken. Have a look at 138 Tubarc - How good is Susan Boyle ? ? ?

  • Reading some of the comments by other folk...looks like you have a comfortable group of cynics who hang out with you and share your opinions....and misery I suspect. Quite amusing....no disrespect intended.

  • Are you an only child perhaps?

Susan Boyle is an everyman/woman phenomena. Most of us have unrealized dreams, and so her story resonates with many peole. Because she's an ordinary person like the rest of us, and because she's striving to realize her dream against impossible odds, we empathize with her, route for her, and maybe vicariouly, share her journey. It's very inspiring actually, but you have to be able to feel and maybe not be so analytical about the whole thing.

  • I think its much easier.....Its hard to get a grab on things in this chaotic world.

Nice to see something and understand it.....something to identify with.

  • Too many foul people are admired, because of the

ridiculousness of the American dream that seems to admire success and material wealth as being the be all, and end all, of everything. Half of the world seems to be chasing it.. Good luck to Susan Boyle and he five minutes of fame...

  • It doesn't actually matter ramzpaul This 15 minutes of fame, will mean that she will make a lot of money (And yes others will make more from her story than she does) but she can always go back into obscurity (if she so chooses), in a lot more comfort, than she would have had otherwise..

I would rather someone like Susan Boyle, had a nice, comfortable, latter stage to her life, than some of the scum bags, who have become famous for awful things like being ruthless and successful.

  • wow uh ur not an asshole

  • RzP: "They're not really liking her because of her singing ability. It's all kind of a put-on."

    Alright... wait for it...

It's a TV show! What do you expect?! *L* I mean, I get what you're saying without question, but this is what television is about. Last year on America's Got Talent, they had a 70+ year old guy who sang Sinatra stuff. He was mediocre at best, and while David and Piers told him that he wasn't that good, Sharon Osbourne kept saying how GREAT he was... ridiculous.

  • Dude, what's happening to your face?

  • ye maybe they are just using her. So what, she gets to be in the spotlight for once in her life. I'm sure she knows what's going on but at this point in her life she's just happy to have this moment. Most pop stars are considered jokes by the general public anyways.

  • Yeah it sort of reminds me of when Timmy was the singing sensation in South Park.

  • That was one of my favorite episodes! Awesome stuff. Good points.

  • I couldn't agree more with you, there is a huge amount of "humbug' going on. Yes she does have an impressive voice but they're all going crazy and slobbering over her cause she's a shocker. The blonde judge was all teary eyed in the close ups even before the singing started. It's gross.

  • Dude... The only place you have taste is in your mouth. Go back to high school and retake music class, and get your ears checked!

  • I never claimed she was a bad singer. My point is that her singing ability is not why she is being praised. She is being patronized.

  • I forget the latin term for "let the thing speak for its self". Can you show me anyone who can sing the song better?

  • @ramzpaul What a silly prat you are. Time has shown that Susan has one of the greatest female voices imaginable. You were so'ooo wrong, but have you got the courage to admit it?. I do hope so, but I'm not holding my breath! I expect you were one of the 15 minutes of fame merchants, but hey, it's almost three years now, and think it likely that she's doing just a little bit better than you ,or I ,are.

  • Reminds a few of us of Mrs. Doubtfire. Think she's quite the character, and will be a huge star (already is.)

    I think she's very likeable.

  • Britain's got talent.

Well, I was gonna start in on ya, but meh. Lol.

Dude, she can sing better than a lot of American pop princesses. She has a powerful, full voice, not this breathy soft shit(Feist) Now if this show was a US version I would TOTALLY agree with you saying that people vote for her and promote her because she is kind of homely, and for the reasons you state! It's Britain tho, and I think they still kind of have more class than that.

  • There is only 1 country that has less class then the good ol USA, Britain #1, Briain #1 Briain #1 Britain#1...........
