  • How come its playing christmas music?! lol!

  • @OlviMasta77 It's an easter egg that happens when you play the game on December 24th. c:

  • @TheOtherLioyd haha cool! I thought it was a mod. But devs these kind of cool things back in the day. Check out the bullfrog games as well...I remember dungeon keeper 1 having lots of random messages on the main menu, depending on if it was christmas, peter monleux's bday, or Elvis birthday!

  • Merry Christmas from the U.S. I remember playing deathmatch in this w/ a friend every Christmas. Good times.

  • They need to port this game to opengl. I'd imagine how great this game would look with updated DirectX11 graphics and sound. :)

  • for the people who Love this game like i do, There is talks of a Sequel that was rumored in 2009 which they said that it will be reboot/remake

  • This game had the best god mode ever.

  • one of the best games i have ever played.. it was only few levels ( or i had the demo) .. wish they can make a remake !!

  • most underrated game ever. This game beats doom in so many ways.

  • "No please, don't shoot, no pl... ARGH!!!"

  • dipstick -> chojin

  • Man I loved this game. One of the first FPS I played as a young lad. I was only like 7 years old, so what I recall from playing it is quite blurry. But nonetheless I do remember thinking it was the most badass, gruesome game ever!

Live long classic computer games.... We'll never forget you.

  • i remember playing this when i was really young...it was so violent!

  • This game used to give me the creeps..

  • This was the best FPS in its day. Blood running down the walls. When playing on a 21" CRT and using a bazooka, every once in awhile an eyeball would fly by with the optic nerve still attached. This game was so far ahead of its time. I would snap up a new release in a second...

  • God rest ye merry 3D Realms.

  • Why is everyone in this thread calling for a dumbed down console version of this game? Honestly, it would take away the charm of this game... With a fucking limited controller... Fuck that shit...

  • @doneplayalmada

in game, just type in on your keyboard (not console or anything)

dipstick. Now it should say cheats enabled.

Then type goto, and pick the level.

type in /bum for some hp, plugem for MP40, hottimes for heat seaker, and booze for drunken missile.

  • dude i played this shit when i was like 7. AWESOME! I wanna play it again. Too bad I have a MacBook Pro. :(

  • Ah ROTT...first pc game that I ever owned. Memories.

  • Is it true it has a random map generator?

  • @Zambaku yes, it is.nly on CD version, though. Not even downloadable versions have it.

  • A favorite of mine.

  • I remember minimizing my screen at this max and it said 'Buy a 486!'

This would run smoth on a 386! why today's game need so much hardware

is it because programmer sucks? because they dont have time to optimize their code anymore?

  • @Bronislawsky Yes. Back then game's managed their own memory and everything there was less hd space and less ram. So your code had to be efficient and small. I think the newer operating systems have spoiled programmers so much they've become lazy. The hardware on your average computer of today is capable of so much if it was properly utilized.

  • did anyone remember during Christmas or something, they would all wear santa hats in the intro screen?

  • been looking for this game for ages...played when I was a kid. thought it was called ROOT.. nostalgia at its finest.

  • wolfenstein, heretic, then ROTT

i love this game since i was 9 years old

  • Anyone ever got the bonus bonus?

  • I've still got the ROTT CD! Think i'll give it a go!

    Gotta love using the EXCALIBAT!

  • @TequilaCT I just got it today.

Im starting to collect old DOS FPS game CDs and cases.

  • @MrThembones And what a great start to a collection! Can't go wrong with ROTT :) Played it again an hour ago! EXCALIBAT!!!

  • @TequilaCT its insanely hard though, lol.

  • @MrThembones True! both Insane and hard LOL especially the last boss!!!

They should re-release this on XBL!

  • @TequilaCT what? they did?

why are they giving all these DOS games to halo faggots, like they'd actually play them.

thats stupid, PS3 should get it.

  • @MrThembones I ment they should and especially it should be on PS3!

(Xbox is full of Halo f**ots Anyone wanna swap my 360 for their ps3 lol)

  • Good Game

    Good Video

    Good Music

  • Very nice seeing this game again, i still hope for a new version of this great game, years of fun.. First game i ever played against my brother (pc vs. pc), still have a memory shooting the flame wall, and him falling to earth as a skeleton.. I miss him (R.I.P. 2005)..

  • gosh i remember playing this game on my gramps computer...he always had the classics...duke nukem...wolfenstein, shadow warrior. memories!

  • Behind ya!!! Behind ya!!! I loved the voice macros you could use in this game.....aha!!!

  • I had the shareware, fun as hell way back when...

  • I remember ROTT being the first FPS where you could walk on multiple elevations on a single layer. Unlike doom where one layer could only accomidate one elevation (no bridges you could walk under etc).

  • omfg what is that tune on the first level he plays? PLZ HELP

  • Grew up with this game, this is legendary to me

  • Comment removed

  • lol i remember it was so mysterious and awesome game i was so afraid of that bazooka shooting robot when i was a kid lol.. good old memories...

  • i miss this game. I liked the aesthetics of it

  • oh asbestos armour, itchy!

ROTT was the best FPS game of the 90's, loved the missle camera

  • loved this game!!

  • Fuuuuck I love this game. I want to buy it on GoG but even though its only like 5 bucks, I can't be fucked :P

  • OMG i don't no how many hours i would sit playing this what a classic

  • lol is that Meryl from Metal Gear Solid at 0:28 ?

  • Makes me dizzy all over again to watch this. Consoles suffer from crap FOV like in this video.

  • ROOT.exe

  • My favorite fps on the DOS is, undoubtedly, Blood. It has so many interactive elements. (pretty much every object, light switches, jukeboxes, organs, etc. Can be used with the space bar) Also, there are many secrets in each level. It's also detailed. Every shotgun shell that hits the ground stays where it is, every wall dent your gun makes never disappears, etc. It's nice to pay attention to the small things. :D

  • yikes ..its tough to say since they all pretty much suck lol .. mordern warfare is better than modern warfare2 .. u cant go wrong with counterstike after all these years

  • Half Life 2. 'Nuff said.

  • omg this game is an oldie but a goodie!! i remember the god mode that was cool

  • the weapons in this game were unbelievable. i was born in 88 and i played this game before elementary school. idk, i knew how ridiculous violent it was but though other things scared me(i.e. bobombs from mario movie), ROTT was just fun as hell, and still is. i just wish you could invert the aiming y axis and have a jump function.

  • besides quake 1 and the original diablo this was one of my fav's of all time.

  • old, but it's still a good game to play! :) I've played this about an hour ago.

  • aaaaaaaaahahaahahahhahaah APOGEE!!!!XD

  • Even after all this time, the weapons in this game are still awesome compared to most of the stuff you see now.

  • old but good game

  • old?ancient!

  • Ludicrous Gibs!

  • it was released 2 days aftet i was born :D

  • Hand of God!

  • what was the gun called that was kinda like the flamewall but it made mass explosions and shook the whole screen?

  • firebomb

  • haha wow that's been a long time. Used to find it a little scary.

  • Gaawd, the sound effects! :D 0:36 ?? :)

  • I can't believe this game used a modified Wolfenstein 3D engine...

  • wasnt it a modified doom engine? then again doom was a derivative of that engine as well

  • No it is most definately modified Wolfenstein 3D. If you look, the walls are on a 90 degree grid, where as doom can have angled walls, also, doom can have different floor and ceiling levels, if you look at this game everything is on one level, (There are scripted elements that raise the player's height off the ground, but that's not the same as having different floor heights)

  • What's with the music? Isn't it an xmas carol?

  • @jerman2003 Yeah, this was a christmas demo.. :)

  • @AndrewDBarker Oh, ok. These early apogee fps games were so much fun back in the day.

  • Awesome FPS! The enemies begging for their lives and fainting was my favorite thing about the game lol. Oh, and the cheat codes ROCKED!

  • Definately one of the best games I ever played when I was younger. ROTT, Doom, Heretic, Wolf 3D, Duke Nukem. Brilliant =D

  • I have to second that!

  • easter egg at the beginning lulz xD

  • Scott Miller said Apogee is making a Reboot of this Game.

  • what's that mean? and do you know how to play other people online?

  • A Reboot Is Like A Remake like Doom 3 is to Doom 1. No I don't know how to play online.

  • Ah, good times. Used to play this all the time! Great fun...

  • Man those people got blown the fuck up.

  • ive played it.... there where some shit in game

  • anybody know where to get the full version for free? please reply

  • why does the HUD look different than some videos ive seen

  • lol i used to play games like this

so confusing to find ur way round

  • I used to LOVE this game! LUDICROUS GIBS!

  • I NOSTAGIA'D!!

  • reminds me of the doom series

  • do you need DOSbox for this?

  • the song sounds like a christmas song

  • That's because it is - "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". ROTT had a number of holiday-themed easter eggs in it, and this was one - that song was played when the PC clock was set to Xmas Day.

  • This was a very innovative game. It used a heavily modified Wolfenstein engine, resulting in clever level design that in many ways was more advanced than Doom. I only played the demo, but it definitely wasn't a game I just forgot about. I should download it. Probably abandonware/freeware by this point, right?

  • that game was amazing

  • omg i played this game when i was like 7

  • R.i.p 3d realms

  • Hehe, man, me and my dad used to play this game at least 2 hours every day way back:), those where the days

  • i want to play this game so badly i looks so cool i never even played it before

  • Fun game... Goood times :)

  • this one was my favorite....the hand of GOD was the best....i think i almost always cheated when i played these games

  • i remember much better graphically, it's me or?

  • it's you. video games in the early to mid 90's were all like this. Not even true 3d as the stuff was all 2d that turned as you moved around.

  • don't tell me that. but i know. they were great, and... such art...were so few.. so..

the bad thing is that i remember this as one of the best. along with another ..evil one.. which was the name? blood?

  • yep blood... one of the first games that mixed zombies with moletov cocktails to make flaming zombies!

  • Holy crap, Blood! that game was awesome, lol.

  • i hope they make this 4 xbox live arcade!

  • No they wont.

It's source code has been released, many fans have ported on all kinds of platforms, look up "XBox port" or something like, if you're really into that gay shit (consoles).

  • Man those where the best times doom and rott , wtf happ to games they try to make them too fancy.

  • I played this so much. The Shrooms are fun !

  • i loved the gore scenes in this, they were so funny

  • I use to play this all the time!!!!!!! I loved this game

  • Why do all old fps look like doom?

  • This game was built on a modified Doom Engine! thats why it looks like Doom.

  • It was actually built on a modified Wolfenstein 3D engine, that's why there are only 90 degree walls and surfaces, unlike the Doom engine which allows for curvature and slanted surfaces.

  • what recording program are u using by any chance

  • clasico muy bueno

    jejejee

    saludos

  • ROTT kicks ass!

  • I remember buying this game when it came out. I was 11 years old. My best friend and I spent countless hours playing this game. This was when FPS were much more enjoyable. Even though they copycatted each other then just like now, it didn't feel like it back then. This was a badass FPS, along with DOOM, DOOM2 and Heretic. After Shadow Warrior and Duke 3D FPS games went downhill for me. The late 80's to mid 90's had the best video games overall, especially PC games IMO. ROTT FTW! 5/5

  • The most fun was to shot the green guys and make them beg "please no please no don't kill me" XD

  • Doom, Doom2, Rott, Shadow Warrior, Duke3d.. I miss to shoot those sprites and see them fall, always keeping an eye on my player's face to see how meaty he gets..

In loving memory of my BFG9000

  • I know just finish playing a dukematch a while decided to look up this game again

  • Had this game back in the day but could never get the sound to work on my 486DX as i did not have enough conventional memory, whatever the hell that was. Had to play it in silence

  • I remember back in the SNES era, we had a 200mhz pc and 16mb ram, onboard video card.

This game was fun to play on those cold december winter days. I'm 21 now. GOOD FUCKING TIMES I TELL YA! I never got to play the full version of this untill now. I can't believe I missed out on such a bad ass game.

  • Holy shit did this game ever rule. I remember playing it on my IBM Aptiva back in the day.

  • I LOVE THIS GAME

  • Rise of the Triad was pimp back in the day

  • few games have as many easter eggs packed into it like ROTT did. what else can you expect from the team that evolved into 3drealms?

  • DIPSTICK CHOJIN Password for all...God Mode

  • NODNOL

  • i got the cd but i lsot it .. and then i deleted it to reinstall .. now i cant find the cd and install it .. its so cool

  • I remember the good times.

  • This game is oldschool :P I couldn't run much on an old 486dx but this one played so smooth.

    Anyone remember GOD MODE?

  • Totally remembered GOD MODE.

I remember getting a cheat code in order to get all the weapons and not getting killed, so what I did is let the other dudes (how were they called?) kill themselves, if not I just used the flamewall and burned them.

  • LOL, how about the mushroom and elastic mode? hehe!

anyone remebers the dude that begs you not to kill him and plays dead?

  • Anyone know where i can possibly download this game????

  • Tidings of comfort and joy? wtf?

  • dont remember running so fast but one of my favorite games any my first real pc game

  • it was my all-time favourite game. not to mention the brilliant musics, as the work of Lee Jackson!

  • i was addicted to this game as a kid.. Question: Does anyone remember the game for either Sega or Sega CD where you played as this chef looking character that threw chop knives or something? It was first person shooter. jus remembering old gaming days haha.

  • That game was "P.O.'ed"

  • Ludicrous gibs!

  • I played the hell out of this game, but I never actually liked it very much.

  • Hahaha yeah me too. Something about it was just really off. Didn't stop playing though.

  • I remember this game, but when i played, i remember it was diffrent like this. But that's lots of time, when i played it, so i can remember wrong. :D God damn good game!

  • YEAH! ROTT!

  • I loved this one when i had it. great to see how many knows this legendary game!

  • Used to play the network game at lunchtimes at college. Great job that was. Happy memories. Love this game.

  • How did you have music background on DOSBox video capture? -___-

  • sniffs.. oh the memories. (oh, if i could pay good money to go back there for just a while.)

  • any1 know if i can get this as freeware anywhere?

  • i played a lot with this game..liked it

  • Loved that game, played it all the time. It came even here in south america

  • WOw. I don't remember the game looking so dark. What fun I would play for hours. Remember the Shroom Mode?! LOL

  • ROTT was awesome. I played it 14 years ago till the final boss.... and it was a long and hard way through thousands of enemies. Especially the dog-mode was funny!
