I don't know if this story is true, if it is entirely true, partially true, or not true at all. Either way I have to say that this is the best book I have ever read. I don't read much, probably only 5 books in my life, but this is a book that I enjoy reading. I think I should read it again because I'm afraid I went to fast, or maybe did not pay attention all the way through and I missed something. Overall though, I did get the story and I like it. Imaging living this book!
I find this talk so inspiring and uplifting. The world often apears to be such a dark place but Roberts has seen that even in the darkest places like slums and prisons human beings are cabable of love and sacrifice. He was shown love in that prison when those men who were criminals gave him their food knowing they would be beaten. To me this is a sign that in the deepest darkness God is there for as the Bible tells us God is love and all who love know God 1John 4. v8. This man is awesome
one of the best books i have ever read, and i have read many, anyone who is interested in a spellbinding page turner, a fabulously rich novel that makes you laugh and cry and wince and cheer, pick it up and you wont put it down
@flyinghotwing So true. I had been in india before reading it. The book was richer then my very rich experience. The book is a classic and, I believe, should replace some of the older books on the school reading lists for English. His prose and descriptions are first rate. buy this book as a present for someone you know who loves good books.
yes i did. Even though he had planed on taking Lin with him to afghanistan since the beginning, it dosent change anything. Still a wise man with a good philosophy on life
He did the wrong thing for the right reason. He made sacrifises for what he thought was the greater good. Im not saying the man was perfect. But it is clear that he was a very wise man who has seen and experienced alot
The replication of how people speak, the well drawn characters, and the beautiful poetic literary language, and the range of emotions from humour and irony to sadness make Shantaram a masterpiece. Shantaram describes it as a novel not a biography but it replicates and expresses the truth of his experiences.
just finished the novel -wow, what a read. All you haters are just jealous. Lived or not-this is a work of fiction people. There is not a disclaimer stating this is totally written from experience. The best writers mix truth with the exceptional to create a story. Do you think Keruoac or Tolstoy wrote 100% from their exact experiences? No way. And who cares, it's the final words left on the paper that tell the whole story. Word.
I'm reading the book and I have to say that the writing is exceptional. I've been to India, and what he expresses about the people there is absolutely true. The beauty is beyond any words and the feeling from the people, well, Linbaba is the only author which has captured it.
Shantaram is one of my fav books, Gregory David or Lin , if i may call him, knows how to keep the reader inclined towards the book. After the book got over i felt as if i had lost something and the fun i had reading it just got over, i hope he comes up with a sequel
And if I've offended any fans, I'd just like to say that I found certain parts of the book to be beautifully, evocatively descriptive, but still thought the overall read was a little too cheesy to do any justice to its out-numbered good parts.
The opium scenes are ripped off a film called 'Once Upon A Time In America' by Sergio Leone as well. Verdict- he's probably done a few things he claims to, but he's evidently full of hyperbole and get's off on the attention. The end product is that the book isn't actually as good as it could have been. Sorry GDR, but even folks in Leopold's know you're lying- the place only turned into a bar sometime in the 90's; as you know, it was a general store before that.
I think GDR is an extremely intelligent man, who could have written even better than he's already done if he wasn't so grandiose and over the top, which seems to indicate a pathological personality. His ego is evidently huge, as is his brain, but really, the guy is full of shit. Shantaram should have been edited to at least half it's size too, it's way too indulgent and over the top.
You're a total sisterphucker... Who comes on here makes a speculative comment like that and then offers no reason for the comment... can you kiss my arse?
I have to agree with you. He actually recounts meeting Prabaker in another clip, then confesses a few years later that he was a fictional character, not based upon any actual person in any realistic way.
Mr Roberts is one of the best- if not THE best- storytellers of our time. He has created a classic that will stand as a milestone within the field of litterature forever.
You know something Prabakar and Karla and couple others in the book are TOTALLY made up characters which did not EXIST , ONLY exist on PAPER.. Prabhakar does not die, there is no Prabhakar
Dont believe me ? check his website!!!!
He is making Part 2 of the book which completes alot of which is left out in the first book . MAn cant wait.
I loved loved loved the book (best book I've read) and I love this guy. He is just great. I'd like to just sit at Leopold's and have a very long conversation with him in the course of a few months.

Yes- but having read the book - how do we justify all of his killings, eye gougings, beating and cheating? He has a developed sense of humanity, a beauty and appreciation for the goodness in the world but is a self-serving hypocrite nonetheless. It makes a good read - but I wouldn't want to have been a tourist he cheated. Good book, good story, interesting life - but don't forget the other side of this man.
I agree with you. The portrait of this man would not be complete without a consideration of his terrible deeds. But then, when did we ever had an intelligence and sensitivity, a gift of observation and description that descended into this depravity and speak of it to the rest of us? I do not say that it redeems him but a part of me feels enriched to learn about things - through him - that otherwise would have escaped my knowledge.
Why must we justify these things. His is a human voice, speaking from a space beyond right and wrong, and good and evil. Violence, inappropriate as it may be, is not unnatural- and what a gift we have in this book to be given such depth of insight into humanity .
SBS9452: did you read the book carefully enough? he didn't cheat any tourists (he just made comissions from illegal jobs, duh?) or kill them or anyone else...
I read the book 4 times and felt new meaning with each time. It is a masterpiece as a novel and an impossible but amazing life.

spoiler alert
he used karla (who thought of him as a father figure) as a prostitute to please a pakistani general
he used lin as a punching bag by allowing him to be in jail to appease that madamme character
he even stood by as one of his best friends was hacked to bits so that the police wouldn't suspect him
this guy is trash, and a hypocrite and if he was a real character I hope he's burning in hell
