Maksim has plenty of unaltered classical peices, played in their cliche manner. However it is 2011!!!! After 300 years of playing the same peice in the same way there is nothing wrong with updating and making it your own! Thats the most amazing part of classical music, its vast amount of possibilities for interpretation. Some people I beleive don't truly understand what expression is. Like it or no, we all have our opinions and tastes. Don't spit on it though!
I like the pedaling. It's well done. I like how his fingers fly up and down the keyboard. I'm hardly paying attention to the orchestration. It looks like he loves doing this, and I admire someone with passion. Life will soon enough come with it's crushing weight. Just enjoy.
Grieg in electro-pop beat... Where is the Nordic melancholy, the powerful melodies, the poetic & lyrical quality of Grieg's oeuvre and the dramatic interplay between the soloist & the orchestra... Nowhere probably, because this is not a soloist, and calling that random ensemble an orchestra would be an insult... But the most hilarious part of this video is its title: that's is definetely NOT Grieg's beloved Piano Concerto. What's next? Maybe Bach's Mass in b minor in a tecno edition? :OOO
Maxim has opend the ears of the youth for classical music,i know many that after listening to him ,then is curious and listen to the original pieces ,and thIS MAN REALY CAN PLAY ...so i down thumb for all that dont understand this is spreading music to a younger generation that never had listen to Mozart ,Bach and so on before .Bravo Maxim .

With all the due respect: the way to make classical music popular for an average listener is educating their taste, making them more sensitive and trying to encourage them to go to great concerts and enjoy the real taste of great pieces, but NOT DESTROYING THE MASTERPIECES AND VULGARIZING THEM, FOR HEAVEN´S SAKE!!!!!
I like how some classical music listeners think they're an authority on "real music". Extremely snobbish. It's like people complaining about how certain pieces "should be" played. Ridiculous!! In the end, it's all music and it's bound to affect different people differently. Try to deal with it in a way that makes you look like less arrogant.
@lindberg555 I accept your opinion, but there is no need to openly insult peoples tastes or choices. I hate hip-hop, its a total abomination in my opinion, but I ACCEPT other people like hip-hop and I don't feel the need to belittle them for their taste. Personally I like both older classical, and Maksim's modern take of classical, who's to say if Mozart, Chopin or any of the other greats wouldn't do just the same with the music and facilities of the modern era? 'With all Due respect'.
Poor and stupid Michelangeli, Leif Ove Ansdnes, and hundreds of other great musicians who dared to play this concerto in the way Grieg wanted... I bet they never got so much money and success. If they only knew that adding couple of tasteless, irritating and vulgar ingredients as here they would be much more famous and "cool"... Another disgrace.
A new version of something can never threaten the previous ones, it is merely a different realization or form which adds to the variety in the world. We can't all share the same tastes. Nothing about this arrangement prevents there being as many traditional Grieg conceri as the world wishes to hear. Nothing is lost, just perhaps a few people access some music in a celebratory atmosphere that they can relate to better than a formal concert. That's it. Simples.
To the naysayers: How many of you are arrangers/pianists of his caliber? I personally envy the man on that stage. Do I sense some bitterness, maybe about the fact that you can't make a good living doing anything resembling what he does?
I have to agree with all the 'pure' fans, I'm afraid. I've got nothing against putting a new spin on something (I thought the 70s 'A Fifth of Beethoven' was fantastic and witty) but this doesn't add anything new. It's just adding a backing that doesn't fit. I can only compare to doing something like taking a Simon and Garfunkel song and trying to rock it up - sure, if the song is completely rearranged, it can work, but simply adding a loud bass and drums is gonna do nothing but degrade it, eh?
To all self-proclaimed defenders of pure classical music who can't keep putting down artists who don't conform to their notion of how to play music: F-CK OFF !!!
This guy is not claiming to do a classical performance of these pieces - he is playing the way he want to entertain his audience. They Love it !!! if you don't - don't watch ?
now you know who he is - don't ever click on another youtube clip of Maksim -- see if anyone miss you ??
How is this more inspiring? Because of the lighting? The bee-bop? Should we then redo the Mona Lisa to be admired with 3D glasses? Next patch up the Parthenon with some plaster?
lighten up. it's his take on the song, just because he did his own version doesn't take away from the original remember. i think this is about taste, it is all relative. also i don't have any problem with doing a second version of the mona lisa, as long as no damage is caused to the original.
Maxim is an awesome artist, on that statement I don't think anyone can argue... whilst this is not as enjoyable to my classically tuned ears, it may inspire the younger generation(which i'm also a part of) to actually listen to some real classical music :)
@kulminatoren Maybe I am wrong but I am afraid it will only inspire young people to hear to THESE kind of arrangements instead of real classical music. They will find it even more boring than ever after listening to this "cool" stuff...
@lindberg555 I started playing piano at 3, composing at 4, and admire both styles/renditions of this piece. You can't compare 2 very DIFFERENT forms of art.
@lindberg555 Your a close-minded biggot. Maksim is one of the greatist Pianists of OUR time. He takes classical pieces and spices them up for the younger generation, so when they listen to something most reguard as classical, they actually enjoy it. If it wasn't for Maksim, the classical genre would be dead except for the few narrow minded snobs like you. I love Maksim's versions, but I also love the classic originals too. Grab your cane, twirl your moustache and adjust your monocle, you fool.
@Superclarinetmorman1 You realise the arrangement is chosen by the shows producers. Not by Maksim, he has little choice in the matter, and while this doesn't appeal to many classically trained musicians, I think it's a good way of introducing classical music to people who don't know it so well.
If he wants to play classical music and make it accessible to people who are not familiar with it, he should at least be SOMEWHAT faithful to the source, or play different works.
maybe hes not emo, he just likes the clothes that a lot of emo people wear? I do, and I'm not depressed in the slightest! I like black, slightly gothic stuff etc. nothin wrong with that, its a personal preference :-)
or you can, with your intellectually insecure ego, trash it, bang it around, say how Grieg would hate it, continue to scar yourself for life at the name of Maksim, and die a poor, depressed individual with no talent
I like it! (But please, don't say I know nothing - I was playing this Grieg piece a year ago with orchester, so I know Something... and I like it, indeed.)
Maksim is a major artist! It's great to know that there are artists who are able to renew music, instead of just reproducing the originals. He gives a new life to the classical music and his success proves it all.
But if you don't like, ok, it's your opinion. If you think you can do better, good for you! don't listen, then!
I remember in the 1970s there was a song called "A Fifth of Beathoven" That was the first time I believe I heard music by the composer even if it took a few liberties with the piece. The important thing is it got me curious about the man and I started seeking out his music. So many musicians and composers have been criticized for having the audacity to commit blasphemy by experitmenting with another composers work. So What? let him have fun!
Grieg can only thank this artist for arising the curiosity of people who never heard his works before and after listening to Maksim look for the original composition.
no need to insult Maksim . he his a young modern, handsome and talented artist
we know everybody that he understood the classic music. BUT ...but the destroys it for the fucking society. our stupid society who can't hear complex music. i am black...b t w
don't you think that is a little small on your part. are you as gifted a pianist? probably NOT and the language that you use is really shameful as well. i too am croatian......shame on youM3RC3p.shame on you for being so naroow minded, grieg would have loved this rendition if he were alive in this day and age......shame , shame, shame for bieng so narrow minded
You know what, let e be honest with you baby lamb.
This is terrible. Really terrible. I could play this quite easily, without having to see any music or anything. Shame, shame shame, for not realising just how mediocre this guy is. If i have to prove it to you by making a vid SO I WILL!
Plus, if grieg were around to hear this he would kill himself. Poor man, really I just end up feeling sorry for him.
ThatÄs horrible! Seriously, if people like this version it's alright, but it doesn't have to do that much with classicla music. He just repeats some phrases over and over again, and makes it sound like a usually pop song!
If people don't like Maksim's remake of classical music, they should go listen to the 'real classic' classical music, instead of wasting time watching this video. There are people out there who appreciate this type of music, although I prefer the original version myself (off I go!!! LOL!!!)
I don't get why people say Maksim bastardizes classical music. Actually, it's just like putting sugar on coffee. He actually makes classical music more interesting and exciting since a lot of people think they're boring.
Chef is quite right. This is definately a good middle ground for the newer generation to become acquainted with classical music. And it sounds great. Well done, Maksim.
Maxim is outstanding ! He brings a totally fresh and unique way to bringing the great classics to life - even if they are short variations on a theme. I`m sure Edvard Greig would be chuffed at this.
revolutionizing the way these classic pieces are percieved??? If you are talking about the tiny importance gaved to this masterpieces, this is not the right way to introduce classical repertoire to people... just stupid...
I at first thought that he was harming music, but to be honest he is doing us all a favor. I would greatly prefer for the younger generations and casual music fans to listen to Maksim and become aquainted with Grieg than to hear crappy MTV music.
After that if they really like it they will look up performances by Ricther, Horowitz, Rubinstein, Argerich, Gilels, Gould, etc.
All this arguing about the bastardization of classical music at the hands of this musician makes me laugh. As a classically trained pianist myself, who has played various composer's works going on 12 years, I've come to a realization. Out of all the genres of music, classical music fans take their renditions WAY too seriously. Why can't you fools look at what he's attempting to do. Layering modern day instrumentation over a classical foundation to help give it a different flavor.
@TheVeroniqq I see you started pretty late. I started playing when I was 5...so 12 years later, I would be 17, and in high school. And then another 8 years to get my B.Mus and M.Mus in Piano Performance.
Congratulations for..."knowing"? Care to compare resumés further?
How can you all sit at your keyboards and bash Maksim like that? He has worked hard, and plays from his soul. A lot of thought and effort went into this piece, and for you to say that he is murdering it and that it is playing "insane pop music" is just disrespectful. You are all entitled to your own opinion, but think about what you are typing.
Yes, yes! This shouldn't be even considered 'classical music' now! I can just see Grieg despairing because his music is so degraded into such...horrible music.
Now Mr. Mrvica...don't you think thats a little too much? How can you defile and completely disintegrate such a great piece like this and force it into insane pop music? I respect that this man has a different look at classical music, I mean, he might be trying to help people listen to more classical music. But how dare he completely make a fool out of Grieg? How can he love great music while he plays this? Shame on him.
it's all about the show, baby! lol. well, sad thing-it's all about the show and costumes etc. nowadays, not about the music, sadly, but that's how it is these days in case you haven't noticed ...
i also think that this is not such a bad idea to show non-classical lovers a way to listening to the classical music. plus you can also look at this like a little experiment of "modern meets classical"-not everything succeds, right?!
That is true. It introduces to modern audiences, but completely destroy it and make the music stupid as if there were only couple chords with a melody in it?
well ... there always has to be something sacrificed for "the greater" good. there can't be always the way we would wished it to be, unfortunatelly. that's how it is in this life ...
How could he play in those gloves ?? :> It's nice, but it's just another one profanation! Try to listen only piano and orchestra, and you'll see how it is really beautiful. But he variates it :( Sory, I'm conservatist, so I don't like it. 1
I cannot believe they did this to these pieces, what were they thinking in when they did these arrangements for pieces like Grieg piano concerto or "Etude Op.10-12"???
this is just pathetic and awful, just horrible pop-playing of pieces for intelligent people and not for morons (like the people who made these fucked arrangements)
don't blame maksim for the changes in the music-he didn't write the arrangement. but still, be openminded; his playing is beautiful, and there are few who can play like him. MAKSIM IS THE BEST PIANO PLAYER IN THE WORLD!!!
hes fucking hot!!! holy shit!!!!!!!

maybe hes not emo, he just likes the clothes that a lot of emo people wear? I do, and I'm not depressed in the slightest! I like black, slightly gothic stuff etc. nothin wrong with that, its a personal preference :-)
Be happy. Enjoy the music or don't listen.

you can either enjoy it
or you can, with your intellectually insecure ego, trash it, bang it around, say how Grieg would hate it, continue to scar yourself for life at the name of Maksim, and die a poor, depressed individual with no talent
....or you can enjoy it

Nobody has to listen or watch what he does.

I am gifted as amusician, so listen Banninger.
if you go to Troldhaugen in Norway when maksim plays this, it's funny, because they say you can see the soil move as grieg turns in his grave.
4:11
It's horrible.
If you've got to spoil classical music to make it appeal, don't play it at all. We'll all be out of jobs, but oh well.
Will170392 2 years ago
i just read this again.
Poor man, really I just end up feeling sorry for him.

to improve needs more creativity as playing straight .... i think he can it play "original" .... but if he doesnt want it so let him do his thing
orleomarty 2 years ago 3
I whole heartedly agree with your response...Maksim is very gifted and anyone can play it straight but to improvise ...wow that takes talent
mikaelbanninger 2 years ago
He's not improvising.
It's memorised music in the style of an impromptu. That means it soudns like it's being improvised.
Will170392 2 years ago
Horrid, wtf is wrong with Mrvica? He didn't like the way Grieg wrote the original, thought he'd improve upon it? Such stupidity!
kellnergram 3 years ago 5
crap
foxyjohnuk 3 years ago 2
ThatÄs horrible! Seriously, if people like this version it's alright, but it doesn't have to do that much with classicla music. He just repeats some phrases over and over again, and makes it sound like a usually pop song!
Mischko89 3 years ago
If people don't like Maksim's remake of classical music, they should go listen to the 'real classic' classical music, instead of wasting time watching this video. There are people out there who appreciate this type of music, although I prefer the original version myself (off I go!!! LOL!!!)
micromae 3 years ago 4
Beautiful! (^^~)

Well done, Maksim.
vlaknall 3 years ago 2
Maxim is outstanding ! He brings a totally fresh and unique way to bringing the great classics to life - even if they are short variations on a theme. I`m sure Edvard Greig would be chuffed at this.

revolutionizing the way these classic pieces are percieved??? If you are talking about the tiny importance gaved to this masterpieces, this is not the right way to introduce classical repertoire to people... just stupid...

Somewhere Grieg is crying... What the hell???
Tatsu999999 3 years ago
Does Maksim stand for "maximize bank account? "---because this is not the original, the music is bastardized
SwePianoholic 3 years ago
I at first thought that he was harming music, but to be honest he is doing us all a favor. I would greatly prefer for the younger generations and casual music fans to listen to Maksim and become aquainted with Grieg than to hear crappy MTV music.
After that if they really like it they will look up performances by Ricther, Horowitz, Rubinstein, Argerich, Gilels, Gould, etc.
ClassicalMMAChef 3 years ago 6
All this arguing about the bastardization of classical music at the hands of this musician makes me laugh. As a classically trained pianist myself, who has played various composer's works going on 12 years, I've come to a realization. Out of all the genres of music, classical music fans take their renditions WAY too seriously. Why can't you fools look at what he's attempting to do. Layering modern day instrumentation over a classical foundation to help give it a different flavor.
pianonotes1010 3 years ago 12
definitely agree on this one!!
bigbadblondebrat 3 years ago
flavor, grieg wrote this with plenty of flavor, AND WITHOUT THE HELP OF Maksim Mrvica
ihrtmusic12334 3 years ago
@pianonotes1010 Amen. You said it better than anybody. And you should know. Thanks.
pegcage 1 year ago
@pianonotes1010
12 years isn't a long time to be playing piano, no offense. That would probably put you somewhere in high school
Of course we take the music seriously, as a Shakespeare fan would take Shakespeare's words seriously. They wrote works of art, the same as Van Gogh.
Finally, you're assuming "modern day instrumentation" is good. Some of it is, yes, but the generic rhythms Maksim chose are utter crap.
FluffyBunnies04 1 year ago
@FluffyBunnies04 you IDIOT. 12 years WOULDNT put you in highschool. IT WOULD PUT YOU IN THE 2nd year on Music academy.
I should know.
TheVeroniqq 1 year ago
@TheVeroniqq I see you started pretty late. I started playing when I was 5...so 12 years later, I would be 17, and in high school. And then another 8 years to get my B.Mus and M.Mus in Piano Performance.
Congratulations for..."knowing"? Care to compare resumés further?
FluffyBunnies04 1 year ago
How can you all sit at your keyboards and bash Maksim like that? He has worked hard, and plays from his soul. A lot of thought and effort went into this piece, and for you to say that he is murdering it and that it is playing "insane pop music" is just disrespectful. You are all entitled to your own opinion, but think about what you are typing.
RhymesWithBauren 3 years ago 7
This DVD/CD should be named "Mvrica Murders Great Music"
ihrtmusic12334 3 years ago

Sinfoniette 3 years ago
It's very sad, that he did this with a beautiful piano concert!!!
Adlih91 3 years ago
it's all about the show, baby! lol. well, sad thing-it's all about the show and costumes etc. nowadays, not about the music, sadly, but that's how it is these days in case you haven't noticed ...
i also think that this is not such a bad idea to show non-classical lovers a way to listening to the classical music. plus you can also look at this like a little experiment of "modern meets classical"-not everything succeds, right?!
urssulas 3 years ago 2
That is true. It introduces to modern audiences, but completely destroy it and make the music stupid as if there were only couple chords with a melody in it?
Sinfoniette 3 years ago
well ... there always has to be something sacrificed for "the greater" good. there can't be always the way we would wished it to be, unfortunatelly. that's how it is in this life ...

Yeah, like we should sacrifice the whole citizen population of America to make one person happy... /sarcasm.

How could he play in those gloves ?? :> It's nice, but it's just another one profanation! Try to listen only piano and orchestra, and you'll see how it is really beautiful. But he variates it :( Sory, I'm conservatist, so I don't like it. 1
