  • Beautiful, compelling, touching.

    Ben's performance is outstanding!

  • I think the two greatest painters were Van Gogh (1) and Picasso (2.) They lived such different lives. Van Gogh never had any women. Picasso had more than he could handle. Van Gogh died early. Picasso lived into his 90s. Van Gogh never received any recognition or money for his work in his lifetime. Picasso became wealthy and an international figure.

  • Thank God he had Theo, or he might have never produced his more famous works at all. I feel so sorry for Van Gogh, but I admire Theo so much for his strength and patience. What a lovely movie! Thank you, uploader.

  • omg why did i wait this long to watch this? what a heart-wrenching story! i couldn't help but bawl as you watch this tormented soul create such beautiful work. i regret not visiting the van gogh museum whilst in amsterdam years ago.

  • I think that the story of Van Gogh's life is so beautifully tragic, and the worst part, to me, is that I think that his illness was actually the part of him that gave him such a creative....explosion in his head.

  • I'd love to own this on DVD but I can't find anywhere to buy it!

  • It's amazing that there isn´t any dislike in this video,

  • This is just - simply amazing. The turmoil is so clear, not only in the words and the story, but in the emotion in Benedict Cumberbatch's performance. I'm off to go watch anything I can find with him starring in it :)

  • i was in tears

  • thanks for uploading this!

  • Watch this last night and it moved me to tears... Vincent van Gogh was a genius however he had so much pain and loneliness in the world. I feel like I can empathise with him... Well done to Benedict Cumberbatch for the acting and Alan Yentob for constructing this!!

  • Very touching documentary/drama. I feel so badly for Van Gogh. His works are fantastic, but his life was so tragic. All you want to do is give the man a hug. Benedict did a splendid job playing him. His performance was so gentile and powerful all at once. Amazing.

  • The film was beautiful. I was never really interested in paintings or works by Van Gogh, but his life story was interesting and unique. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

  • It is weird seeing him in this right after "Hawking" right after "Sherlock" and so on. He is very brilliant. He stays within himself, yet completely delved into a character. Completely inspirational.

  • Wow, that was simply amazing. Vincent's work is very inspiring to not only artists but to people as well. His life was very short and lonely, and this film certainly makes you think about that. Benedict done an outstanding job portraying him and his performance really made you connect with the character, he is an amazing actor.

  • Wow... That was so incredibly inspiring! I'd like to put some sunflowers at Vincent's grave some day...

  • Thank you very much for sharing this moving documentary with us, Lorna. I really enjoyed it.

  • I don't consider myself a fan of art, but this was very interesting! and of course benedict cumberbatch did an amazing job! :D the way he portrayed van gogh was absolutely brilliant!

  • Love this film thanks for posting it !

  • Really excellent documentary. A heart-wrenching story accompanied by wonderful music. Awesome work, Benedict.

  • heartbreaking doc, wonderful artist. so sad he couldn't get his work sold during his lifetime but at least he is recognised now :)

  • Just finished watching this. Great documentary, and thanks again for the upload. Hopefully the BBC will have the good sense to allow this to remain up. Now I think I will listen to 'Vincent (Starry Starry Night)' by Don Mclean.

  • Does anyone know the name of the song playing near the end while Theo is talking?

  • Thank you very much for uploading these. I've missed this both times on the BBC (it has been aired tonight) and it is no longer for re-watch on BBC iplayer, nor is it available on DVD. So I now have the chance to watching this thanks to your upload.

Vincent Van Gogh might well have suffered from mental illness (something I can relate to), but at least his legacy as a great artist survives today. I only wish I had his artistic talent, as I was interested in drawing in my formative years.

  • La tristesse durera toujours. RIP Vincent.

  • That. Was. Amazing. Benedict was brilliant, and we mustn't forget Jamie either. Very moving, and very well done. Thanks for uploading.

  • The Van Gogh episode of Doctor Who last year was my favourite.

  • amazing, all i can do is stand and applaude, brilliant piece of art in itself, this documentary, love the way it was done, part dramatization, but all true

  • God, I just want to go back in time and hug him. Poor guy.

  • Thank you so much for uploading this - what a wonderful heartfelt performance. I knew a fair bit about van Gogh beforehand but this made real the loneliness of his life, just heartbreaking.

  • This is just magnificent. Words are escaping me right now...yet I continue to type them...

  • its only me or everybody had tearly eyes in the end?

  • I became interested in viewing other works of Benedict after watching his performance in Sherlock, watching this shows the actors depth of talent and feeling with which he portrays his characters.

His portrayal of Van Gogh is heart wrenchingly beautiful. Even given the sporadic interest shown towards his paintings in his lifetime and the knowledge of his own encroaching madness, Van Gogh knew with an amazing prophetic certainty that his work would prosper only after his death. And that is sad.

  • That was amazing.... I'm just out of words to say

  • Thankyou for uploading this, such an over whelming performance, by Benedict :D

  • I missed this when it was broadcast and I'm very happy to have had a chance to see it here. A fantastic documentary. I thought I knew quite a lot about van Gogh but there was so much here I had no idea about and the beautiful acting made it all so much better even and so moving. Thanks for sharing this.

  • my god this is a beautiful portrait of van gogh, it even brought tears to my eyes.

  • A truly stunning performance.

If only he were alive to see how loved he is.

  • This brought tears to my eyes. What a performance!

I never knew much about Van Gogh, but he really is a national treasure.

And thank you of course for uploading :)

  • I'm into art aswell and I just admire Vincent Van Goghs work. That richness of colour and imagination in his work, what extraordinary shapes he was able to see in the most simple things is just overwhelming. I learned a lot about hwo he was through this film.

And let us not forget Benedict Cumberbatch, who did an outstanding performance. He showed us the many parts of van Goghs personality and feelings in such a way that you connected with him and felt with him. Thats how good his acting is

  • Thank you so much for uploading this! It was a wonderful documentary on Van Gogh. Benedict Cumberbatch is fantastic.

  • Can't thank you enough for uploading this!! You're a treasure. This blending of two of the men I love the most is just a match made in heaven: Ben and Vincent!! What a treat!!! Out of words now...

  • Thank you SO much for these. Marrying my love for both Benedict AND Van Gogh...doesn't get much better!
