What most people dont realize is that the lyrical content of the original had a very dark tone. What Nevermore did was simply translate the music into a tone as dark as the lyrics. The original was acoustic and dont get me wrong, it was a great song, but I feel the instrumentation of Nevermore's version fit the lyrics alot better than S&G's.
