  • Stop hating on Joanna! I understand that technically speaking, she may not be the best, and she doesn't always keep a very steady beat. However, Glenn Gould just relies on speed. When you hear him play, sure it sounds great, but all you can tell is that his fingers move. He doesn't listen to the music enough. Glenn Gould plays in a way that makes it obvious how talented he is. Angela Hewitt and Joanna MacGregor really bring out how amazing Bach is.

  • @puppy9violet Very well put! They're all great musicians...

  • @puppy9violet sorry, you got nothing about Glenn Gould and about music. Read some books, make yourself a culture and then you may start to argue with a mind like him.

  • @str3123 Okay, then you tell me what part I got wrong. Besides, even if your opinion differs from mine, music is about interpreting it in a way that makes sense to you. So reread that comment, and intend it to be for yourself. I have never liked Glenn Gould in my life. Just because he's the more "favorable" one by some's standards, I'm sorry, but no offense, he can't play music. Obviously he's better than I am, but he needs to slow down. Speed isn't the best way to express everything.

  • @puppy9violet Ok, you should you really end elementary school before posting comments on ytube. You may not use this argument as a critic simply because Gould is not interpreting everything faster or slower. He knows the harmonic sense of every single note, on the history of the composer and... blablabla, should I really waste my time explaining you philosophy of music? No, then grab some books and make yourself a culture. (Einstein and Newton told speed is just relative to the observer, btw).

  • @str3123 So how old are you? 3? As for "the harmonic sense of every single note, on the history of teh composer and..." that's only two things you mentioned, both of which are obviously present in Angela Hewitt's music. If you can't tell, it must be because you are so stunned by Gould's fast speed that you can barely hear what's going on. And why don't you go make YOURself a culture? You clearly have not spent much time on education; Newton did NOT believe speed was relative.

  • @puppy9violet 17y of musical studies aren't enough for you? Newton did belive speed is relative.

Again, read the books: they didn't speak about how "bach sounds jazz" but about serious harmonic (and most of all: esthetics) topics I won't even think to cover on a ytube comment. Why should we do music at all? Not certainly because of "how sounds jazz" and neither for "speed". If you just get "speed" from gg interpretations it's your lack, not mine.

  • @str3123 Time*. Sorry. I'm just going to back off from this argument. I am not, however, convinced that Glenn Gould is a feeling music player. I am, in fact, far from it. However, this is wasting too much of my time, and I'm sure SoliDeoGloria8550 doesn't appreciate this. So, go on and have fun with your life interpreting things the way you want.

  • @puppy9violet In fact, he's not a "feeling" music player: that's why he's greatest than all this other that are just copying him in the "appareance" and in the repertory (Bach for the piano was considered an abuse, before gg).

  • @puppy9violet Mh, i think that her Bach is amazing. It is not mechanic, like Gould, but it is not romantic at all, it is always clear in polyphony and she doesn't add any pedal. And her technique is flawless...

  • Qu'est ce que c'est chiant...

  • she's so cool. thank you for sharing this. best, stefan

  • I love romantic interpretations of Bach.

  • Really excited to see that Joanna is laying with Britten Sinfonia at the Reverb concerts at London's Roundhouse on Jan 23rd.

  • Both her and Angela Hewitt are both too romantic. I purchased Hewitt's new release of the 48 and it's awful (I'll ship it to you denisdeasy for free if you want it - it's just wasting space here). Somebody needs to get her a metronome. It's hard to listen to anybody perform these after hearing Gould. His master of counterpoint is unmatched.

  • I agree with you about GG, his performances are the best, and I prefer his keyboard concerto in Dm to both Hewitt's and Macgregor's. Having said that I do think both ladies give a very creditible performance and contrapuntal interpretation is after all quite a subjective topic

  • Please, send it to me. I'll pay for postage.

  • she is a bach maestro, Gould was erratic & variable in his interpretations - sometimes it worked, sometimes he was an idiot dribbling on the keyboard while he hummed along to his own playing - give her a break, at least she dosen't wear overcoats!

  • She has an overly romantic touch to bach. Nicely done but not on the technical level of a Bach maestro like Glenn Gould.

  • 歯切れの良いフーガですね!
