The stupid sheeple love flashy words like "change" and "hope".
Its going to take him messing up America before the illusion will be shattered. Everyone forget how he wouldn't wear the small pin with the American Flag, why he wouldn't put his hand on his heart when the Star Spangled Banner would sound. Hes a snake oil salesmen & we bought it ! Where is America headed in the hands of this guy we know nothing about? Hold on, it's going to be a rough ride !
Legally though Lincoln DID free slaves. No it wasn't perfect, yes they were left to the devices of state governments which implimented Jim Crow however the Emmancipation Proclamation was the document which commenced emmancipation in any state which the United States controlled. Of course it didn't do so in Confederate states NOT under US control but then that's like us trying to control Spanish domestic law.
The 13th Ammendment was needed to outlaw slavery but this Act was also needed.
Talk about it Bro! Abe LIncoln had much too hide such as his blackblood , that's y he was so dark hello! & when u have a mulatto attempting to pass, they always b harsher than the actual white person because they got something to prove, they'll b the ring leaders @ the lynch mob!Yea man Pres. Obama got it twisted when he always praising Abe mothefucking Lincoln, yet afraid to say Martin Luther Kings name hmm go figure!Slavery was big business with the USA Gov't @ the head! God bless Black People
Abraham Lincoln was, in fact, part african (of ethiopian decent) and part native american but was "passing" as white because of his skin tone. It actually doesn't take much research to figure this out. At the same time due to the nature of the social standing of a passing mixed person back then he probably considered himself a white man and acted as such but it does make me wonder about his concept of identity.
@ekiroto There's no evidence to this effect. People called him a "black president" because of his role in freeing the slaves, many meant such a comment as an insult.
When Lincoln fostered a relationship with Frederick Douglass and realized at the same time that the south was not giving in or negotiating at all on the institution of slavery, he began to revisit the importance of slavery as the issue of the war. Thus, we have the Gettysburg Address which makes slavery the reason of the war without actually saying the word.
I believe that while Lincoln was not perfect, he was the best option at the time and was a vital piece of our liberation. But just a man
@seashell1111 ..be that as it may, he still got in the way of freeing black slaves. So, I steer wayyyy clear of calling him "the best option". A close relationship with Douglas maketh not a better option, called Lincoln..lol, if I may be so flippant. Lincoln didnt have our best interest at heart because like most white people of that time, who cared less about slaves, he was clueless about our struggles...he wasnt chained in the belly of a ship, for weeks on end, starving. And he wasnt a slave..
I'm not sure what you mean specifically by "got in the way of freeing slaves." That is a loaded statement, requires more info in order to respond. While he didn't necessarily internalize a mindset of equality for black slaves, he did what most white men would not have done - whatever his motives. By best option I'm speaking in terms of the other candidate on the ticket when he was elected/re-elected. I don't idolize Lincoln, but I do give credit where due. Again just a man.
@seashell1111 Yes very true. Fact is you had to free slaves which is what Lincoln did. The Emmancipation Proclamation freed slaves in states controlled by the Union and by advancing Union states so what bennett says is a lie! The Emmancipation Proclamation was not perfect but did allow us to first end slavery and then outlaw it via the 13th Ammendment.
This guy is selling a flawed book. Like many other liberals he just want to attack the country and its heroes.
Lincoln was a man of his time and a southerner and so he held many of the same beliefs about white supremacy that most whites did. Did he start the war because of slavery? No. Did he spend his career pre-presidency as an abolitionist? No. But would he have ever been elected President if he had? Of course not! What made Lincoln "great" was that he was open-minded enough to continue to learn and listen - although sometimes forced - and put his knowledge to action.
Great to hear him speak about his book - "Forced into Glory,,,Abraham Lincolns White Dream." (by.Lerone Bennett jr, & bound by Johnson publishing) . *** I'd advise getting the hard back, . Cos my paperback fell apart... He He !... Thank You regards.
Some slaves went to Africa!! Liberia worked out real well. Murder capital of Africa. You guys ever going to figure out the democrats are holding you back with welfare. You get the slave shack but you don't have to work. How about those gangs and ghettos. Whitey owes you nothing. What if the slave owners 1% of the southern population just shot all the slaves at war s end? How or why Lincoln freed the slaves doesn't matter. God got the job done. Grow up Bennett. Brad
he would act very different. If he were white he would know that pressure is a cruel cultural tyrant. Just like the black kids beating me just for being white. You are a bitter small man kicking against the pricks. Lincolns hatred of slavery brought the republican party into being. His election as president sparked the civil war. I bet your ancestors are grateful for him. I've met your ilk before. Brad
I wished he would have sent black people back to Africa. May be Africas natural resources would be wasted by European influence, allowing apartheid, evil dictatorship, and genocide.
Credibility As far as I am concern most events in American history are questionable depending on whose point of view its coming from. Should I believe what has been taught to me from American history books after being lied to for so? Credibility.Ha
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Lerone Bennett is a fucking moron. Taking such a contrarian view, distorting history, and outand out lying for the sake of selling a few books. Mr Bennett is neither a learned man nor a respected historian. He has zero credibility and appeaently, even less dignity.
And what are your arguments? It is one thing to spew a RESPECTED historian and revisionist for Lincoln as we all know is more of a myth than anything else! What are your arguments in regards to Lincoln? Have you ever been at the Lincoln Memorial and read the man own words in regard to the blacks?
Tavis invited Bennett on the show because he wanted him to "educate" the audience about who Abraham Lincoln really was, in order to make Obama look like a fool for wanting to announce his candidacy in Springfield instead of at the SOTBU.
I'm not talking about Tavis Smiley trying to embarrass Obama about knowing in advance about the State of the Black Union event, I'm talking about Tavis trying to make Obama look stupid for announcing his candidacy in Springfield, the home of Abraham Lincoln, even though Lincoln was racist against Blacks.
If Obama were alive during slavery in the United States, he would have been sold into slavery with the rest of us. What has Tavis done for the Black community other than make money of off it, from the sale of his many books??
Nope! look into the laws of slavery, Obama has a white mother, the only real way to be born into slavery was to have a black mother, that's why they could rape black women and hang and kill black men for even looking at white women. If white women had black kids there would be too many free blacks walking around, they would've hung Obama's father from a tree, but Obama'd be a free man.
I was referring to the fact that Obama looks like a Black man, I wasn't referring to his actual heritage. I'm aware that his father was an African immigrant. However, there is no way of knowing for sure whether or not Obama has any ancestors who were slaves, it is possible that he does.
Regardless....Obama looks black so he would have been treated like a "nigger" called a "nigger"..made to cow tow and bow and scrape and talk ignant so's massa kin feeel gud...suh iz powful sawry uzaint heppy wit me....i be gud nigger suh...

Tavis Smiley is a jerk. He deliberately tried to embarrass Obama and make him look stupid because he didn't attend Tavis's little "State of the Black Union" event.
BS, if you saw the West clip, he knew a year before. Now maybe he had no clue how harsh the trial was and thought he could keep it, listened to his 'advisors' re: all of the people and Springfield symbolism (though obviously this prof. dissents) or didn't hear Lincoln didn't free the slaves a million times since he wasn't raised here in our black experience... only read it in books in Hawaii. We have to remember the education he had, it wasn't the local public school curriculum.
Where did I say that he didn't know about the State of the Black Union a year before he announced his candidacy for President?? Obama made a smart political move by not attending this event, because he knew that from the very beginning he had to present himself as a candidate for all Americans, not just Blacks. Tavis was/is still salty toward Obama because Obama refused to stroke Tavi's ego by attending this event.
Tavis is not the spokesperson for Black America, so he should humble himself and realize that just because Obama doesn't attend his yearly event doesn't mean that he doesn't care about the Black community. So now you're going to pull the "Obama isn't black enough" argument? Please.
If that's the case hopefully our soon to be President as his first act would be to call for one big interracial-orgy ;)-I love history lessons when they're truthful it's time to really update the textbooks for our children. Remember that your children are not born with racist views, it is instilled in them by yourself, their friends (parents) and the media. I consider myself to be a prejudiced individual because of my relation to the final 2. I know of how I am and I don't share ignorant views
He's completely missed the point that Lincoln was the first president of the Republican Party, which was the first American political party that explicitly supported liberation. So even though Lincoln only freed slaves incrementally (because he feared the wrath of of Union Slave states) is irrelevant. It was necessary for liberation to occur when it did. Lincoln and the Republican Party accomplished what they sought: universal manumission and outlaw of slavery.
Yes, but still out of manipulation and the attempt to save one's ass. The Republicans did what what they did because they had to, not because they cared. And that speaks to us even today! So don't forget that.
The Republican Party was founded as an abolitionist party. I agree abolition may not have occurred when it did were it not for the Civil War. Abolition was politically expedient when it occurred, but you are overlooking the fact that Lincoln was the first president of the first abolitionist party in the United States. It was not disingenuous.
That's irrelevant when Lincoln absolutely separated himself from the abolitionists. He once said "If I could the save the union...but not abolish slavery...I would do it." Also, Lincoln didn't emancipate slavery, the Constitution did,(the Emancipation Proclamation was a military document that only mentioned the border states) Lincoln stated in his First Inaugural Address that he supported the Corwin Amendment, which would have made it illegal for Congress to abolish slavery.
He said this in Illinois in a speech to Peoria,Illinois."My first impulse would be to free all the slaves, and send them to Liberia, to their own native land." Abraham Lincoln's mentor, good friend(probably best friend) and man whom he got most of his philosophy from, was Henry Clay. Clay was a slave owner from KY who had a nationalist look at America and a large central government.
It amazes me how many people praise this comment and have no clue what the "abolitionist movement" represented. It was much, much more complicated than just freeing slaves. To shortly help you understand FATToneys misled statements, some slaves were against the ideology of abolitionists. Furthermore,if you are so sure on Lincolns true stance (not just his political agenda), explain his stance during his second reelection campaign? Don't confuse a man with his title-even if that man is president.
It is hard to condense my response in one post If you read my other statements, you would know that I brought up the other issues of the abolitionists movement. Secondly, you can not equate Lincon with abolitionists because he clearly wasn't an abolitionist Lincon's campaign is irrelevant to his policies. During his first inaugural address, he supported the Corwin Amendment. Then, in his second term, the 13th Amendment. He appeased to both sides and contradicted himself.
Not really. "..all men are created equal" ring a bell? Lincoln wanted to preserve the union, and abolishing slavery was the only way to do so...which led to the war. Secondly, the Civil War wasn't about slavery, it was the South being treated as filth by the North (taxes, land and tax issues). Without the Confederate States, there'd be no Bill of Rights and government would have absolute control.
@santran LMAO. An Executive order is a military document. The President is the Commander in chief and Executive Orders are orders relating to the office of the Executive/Commander in Chief.
Slaves were no longer needed because of machinery. So to have romantic feelings of Lincoln's agenda is false. If the "cotton jin" was not created along with other machinery then the slaves would have been enslaved for hundreds of years more.
The slaves were not able to make as much money as the machines would eventually make slave owners, thus releasing them unto their own. Not because of some spiritual revelation of guilt or the understanding of how horrific slave owners were it was all about greed and money.
The cotton gin was invented in 1793 and the first tractor was invented in 1796.The Emancipation Proc: The first one, issued September 22, 1862, declared the freedom of all slaves. It was about money/power/greed not an emotional feeling of how wrong it was to enslave people. Lincoln wasn't a hero to non whites.
Lincoln(slave owner) knew that keeping slaves and have the machinery would not be beneficial to them. They could make 100 times the money with machinery rather than have slaves to work the land. When the slaves were freed they did not have equal rights and couldn't get good paying jobs.
The first slaves were brought over in the 1700s until the end of the 1800s. It took over 200years for Africans in America to get equal rights. The Civil rights movement/War 1955-1968 post Marin Luther King. So Lincoln wasn't a non hero Marint Luther King was a true Hero!
I'd hope most economic stimuli don't take 70 years to take effect. The country might be in trouble with this recession if that's the case.
The Republican Party was the first abolitionist party. The first Republican president abolished slavery. What more could you want?
If "money/power/greed not an emotional feeling" motivated abolitionism, why did it take 60 years from the economic developments you cite for an abolitionist party to come about?
GET OVER IT!!!!!!!Every single race has been enslaved at some point in time. If you hate this country so much then leave. I never did shit to nobody and my family never had any part of slavery. I am not going to feel bad about something that I had nothing to do with. If you are stuck in a bad environment then join the military. That's what I did and it changed my life. Take responsibility for your actions. This guy isn't helping anybody of any color. This is just holding back progress.
The fact remains that the social infastructure of an entire race was completely dismantled and didn't exist for over 200 years.
Now I am for personal accountability, but our forefathers(in social standing) did not take responsibility for what they did and the black race in America has been paying the price in blood ever since.
It is the same with the indigenous people of all of America.
I respect your opinion and agree that they got fucked over, but I don't understand how thousands of immigrants can come to this country every year, bust their asses and make something of themselves but they can't. Something doesn't add up. A lot of them don't even speak english but they adapt and work their asses off. I am just saying the excuses are getting old and the people using them need to look at themselves before blaming someone else.
"Leaches" a large number of people caught in the storm were helping other AMERICANS that the state and the city government had failed. To previous comment made, that majority of them are leaches is complete duff. I'm for and from LA and I had several family members that I took in before the storm and several of my family members went back to help those in need. Leaches, I met a few and most are not in Louisiana, but on YouTube watching history and doing little to shape it.
I would like to say that is one of the truest statements that could ever be told. This is ridiculous that some African Americans hide behind this still. Look at what happened during Katrina. Than look what happened in the Central US when they just had those disastrous flooding. Could it be possible that the people in LA, the majority, are leaches on society and have no intent on bettering themselves or society? Now Obama wants to help them even more ...
We are in the year 2008!!! Hello!! Slavery is a part of history, but why in the hell is it still a part of our lives today, let it be history! No one can change that, and it is no longer an excuse as to why we as black people can't progress! I am not enslaved! I can go where I want when I want and do what the hell I want, why are we still talking about this shit like it happened yesterday? WAKE UP PEOPLE! Quit holding on to the past like it happened to you.
April 11, 1865 Lincoln became the first president to outwardly wish to extend voting rights to african americans. Do your own research, its much more rewarding.
my point exactly one if any is ever caught be racist meanwhile on the other side its 1 ever hour!!!
face reality racism is taught to kids hate is taught
love is natural. i.e. : bah bah black sheep have you any wool yessa yessa three bags full one for the whom?? the master!! wat master the poker master or "theeeee master"
tip of the iceberg my friend... tip of the ice berg.
90 percent of americans are in denial and thats truly a sad thing.
so who cares what the reason for freeing the slaves were. , "...all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free..." thats still a powerful document and statement for the time.
Abraham signed the proclamation of emancipation so deserves credit for helping to bring freedom and normalcy to the lives of thousands of black people. However he did believe that the white man was superior, however this kind of belief needs to be put into the context of the moral zeitgeist of the time. Lincoln was indeed streets ahead in his thinking in comparison to beliefs held common at the time however if he had been born in our generation he would have cringed with shame over such beliefs.
not if history suggests otherwise. he had noooo freaking choice the revolution was at its peak!!
he had to and i am sure he wasn't jolly after he did that!!
free the slaves to what extent? so that we need another piece of paper to be renewed ever couple years to allow black people to vote?? thousands and thousands of black people died in transition and all we focus on is some bigot's signature? with all due respect fuck lincoln thats what he did (con) and i mean that from the core of my heart.
He still signed the Emancipation Proclamation. I read Slave Narratives where Abraham Lincoln personally came to the slaves to tell them they were free and they said "where will we go?" and decided to stay and work for the white slave owner as Freemen.
How is he illiterate? YOU seem to be the one who cannot read. He said bastardization and that's what he meant. If you would expand your vocabulary you might actually understand what he was saying. look up the word and you'll probably apologize for your ignorance.
I want all people to notice that the leaders of the black community always place themselves as the victims of slavery.None of these people experanced it. They cant separate themselves from it. The reason is because it is there foundation of their movement if you want to call it a movement.A lot of people all over the U.S, myself included, have black friends, black gf or bf,and we get along. But these leaders will always consider themselves the victims.Thats how they make their money.
Panama. It is my understanding that Abraham Lincoln's staff considered exporting black Americans to Panama! President Lincoln evolved. One of his major objectives was to save the Union!
What the fuck r u losers talking about? He's not a racist, he just telling u what ur history books failed to teach u. It's stupid people like you who just love to think black people are up in arms for no reason. MLK was about peace and loved every HUMAN BEING, even those who hated him. This country is a giant melting pot, which has been openly inviting all races into the U.S, then we have stupid people like urself who complain about this. Yo, just admit that you hate everything thats not white
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Another black racist that thinks he is an intellect, this is what MLK and political correctness ahs done to America, and soon the same premise will give it up to the illegal Mexicans!
And ps there where whites at the "black out" concert, I got the dvd,so dont suggest even remotely that Jay-z had an agenda, cuz Jay is like the least political rapper on the planet his shit been plastic pop, an dont go "when my brother lived there" hear say, an spread complete misinformation on that man, the concert sold out in one day maybe your bro' wasnt listenin the "black" station when it was announced you all have a tendency to be late on the "black" stuff, you guys figure out
Im worried bout real shit like health insurance, 401k's and retirement, tons of people cant retire, workin at 65+ cuz the govt didnt protect them when these millionaires decide to rob them of job security, and benefits, doesnt stand up for them when the jobs are sent over seas for cheaper labor, an they still buying that "white privilidge" bullshit, govts thrive off the ignorance of the poor an middleclass black white brown yellow an red, learn about it...
You motherfuckers need to stop empowering these bigots, by making them feel that they "may have it better cause thier white" bitch please, this aint the 1800's, its just as many poor, uneducated, and underemployed whites out there, dont believe that white privlige bullshit, lets talk about food stamps, HUD, pell grants, AFDC, WIC, all that social shit thats supposed to be a handout that they like to put a black face on, all that shit was created to support whites,
Much Love to you 1987JD..I strive to love and respect all people. However, "until you have walked in a person's shoes", it very difficult to imagine the struggles they face. This is NOT racist information, this is educational and liberating. I understand your position but its because what is being said does not directly apply to you.
In case you haven't noticed most people aren't rascist, you are taught by these "activists" that we all are. Don't let them change your views so they can profit from books and movies!! I say we all stop screaming rascism and just let people be as they are. Judge a man by character! (I'm a whitey if you are curious)
Sweetheart, most people don't "think" Whites are racist because of Black activist indoctrination, but by their own every day experiences and struggles for equality with them.
I think black people are more racist than white people in my own personal experience. I'm British and none of my white friends ever see colour. However in my experience black people always seem to refer to people as "my people." "We need to help my people escape poverty, my people do this and that..." If you only think about your own race that to me is racist.
we say my people for a variety of reasons. the most important one is till about forty years ago the only person helping us were our people. if for many generations the only person that was willing to help you was blacks when ever you moved to a new town you had to talk to blacks to find the safe places for you and your family. then you would understand. it is a leftover characteristic of different times. A tradition if you will.
and trust me your white friends see color just not in you.
I'm only 28 so 40 years ago represents a different time and age I would hope we have moved on from by now. Such 'traditions' need to be left in the past for the sake of unity. And my friends obviously don't see colour in me because I'm white but how can you say "trust me they do see colour" when you don't even know them?
Get out of here we still have traditions from thousands of years ago that still remain today they are extremely hard to remove.
40 years ago may be ages to you. but my dad is 50 my grandma 80 and 40 years is not that long ago.
Tell the Jews to move past the holocaust.Americans move past 9/11 and Pearl Harbor. or a rape victim to simply get over it.HELL a famine in Ireland more than 250 years ago caused the Irish people to be very out spoken about famine today.
You completely misunderstood my point and I actually take offense at the mere suggestion that I was insinuating anything like what you've put in your reply. Let me give you an example so I can make myself clearer. I'm British and in both World Wars millions of British men laid down their lives so I can enjoy the freedom I enjoy today. I will always remember the huge price they paid and will never forget how much we owe them. But do I still blame Germany for all those millions of lives (cont)..
are you serious dude? ok to sum it up in a nutshell
if you can tell me how many black celebrities apologized for being racist go ahead i will wait... ok ready? the answer is none!! how many white celebs? this is minor but its just an example. also where's the black kkk taking white men, women, kids, and pets from their homes and hanging them for fucking centuries! name one one group thats black that did that!! also ask ya white frens how many of them would accept a black man as their brother in law
Well just last year Micheal Irving Apologized for being Racist. And Black KKK?nevr heard of them.Would like to read about them though send me a link.
Tell me why Blacks are only 12.7 percent of the population.15% of the drug users and yet make up 36.8% of those arrested for drugs?By the way 72% of all drug users are white.
hanging them for centuries in what country by the way? There is no black KKK in the US or any such group that were hanging whites for centuries in the US.
exactly! so i cant understand why every other race hates black people what the fuck did we ever do to you guys? what did we do lets see hmm.. demand equal rights and justice? demanded you treat us as human beings?
i cant think of one single fucking reason why other race hate blacks is it because of gangs? shootings?? what?
because if u talking about evil doings white people pretty much got that covered ( i love all race my grandad is part asian my daughter half polish, sisters/bro half white.
If this interests you, please read a book called "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn. You will learn more than you ever learned in school about the history of this country.
Barack Obama is a man of good character with outstanding leadership qualities. John "Bomb-Bomb-Bomb Iran" is an old, dusty fart who has post war flash-backs and thinks we are still in Vietnam - more of the same - Hitlery "Sniper Fire"...HI-LIAR-I-OUS! A sociopathic narcissistic brat who feels entitled to the Presidency. Who are the elitists here? Bill can't keep it in his pants, and Hitlery, who is as fake as you can get, can't run a household, much less a country. Do't be fooled! OBAMA '08!
You can't argue with the facts of history. My Father too worked his BUTT off in the Steel Mill. I am going for OBAMA in 2008! Mc Cain has no clue about what is really going on in the United States of America outside of his own backyard. He is not in touch with ailing communities within the United States no matter what the race is.
Yeah, more whites on welfare??? But they are not being bused to my local school driving up my property taxes in the thousands......idiot. (Affirmative Action)
Oh and...40 acres and a mule my ass.
My grandparents never got a mule, instead, my grandfather was a slave to the steel mill for 85 cents a day from which most went back to the company for rent. 7 days a week 12 hour shift, no days off and walked 5 miles each way to work. Screw you!

EVIDENCE:In 11.September collapsed not only twin towers, but World trade center 7(WTC7) building too, even it was not impacted by airplanes. 9/11 was planned earlier.WTC7 collapsed in 11.september 17:20. In the same day you can not plan and put bombs. It proves 9/11 was planned by USA officials, CIA.
watch?v=EZ9BofDUXv0
REASON:round constitutional rights with antiterrorist laws(it is way to militar dictatorship),invade Iraq, gain control over huge oil reserves.
I cant speak for other white people but I never got a mule or 40 acres and don't know of anyone who has. I do know this.....I am paying $2500 more in property taxes because of affirmative action/busing. My own kids deserve my hard earned bucks, not some kid whose parents won't work. I worked in McDonalds, cleaned houses, shoveled shit and more until I made enough to go to school. No sob story will change my mind. I am now personally paying for blacks and I wont apologize.......what for?
Most black people do work. There are more white people on welfare than blacks. Remember blacks only make up 13% of th population. The drugs and guns were given to blacks by whites, when you cannot find a job to feed your family what alternatives to you have. Whites have benefited from 40 acres and a mule because blacks never got their fair share of what was promised them by the government.
All anyone deserves in this country is an equal opportunity. Equality under the law, the ideal, shouldn't trump freedom however. Government should not be the guarantor of anything except a chance at opportunity. Everyone has to define happiness and success for themselves and make the effort to get it. As long as noone infringes on another's rights this should take place without government interference. We'd be better off taking care of ourselves and each other without big brother. Conservatism!
Barack - Hillary - McCain all CFR members all have voting against decriminalizing drugs. So the next round of questions should be - who inhaled, who enjoyed it, now who wants to go to prison for admitting it.
CFR-Obama voted for every new version of Patriot Act, Homeland Security, Foreign Military Construction. 760 bases 130 countries, as did CFR-Hillary, CFR-McCain
You people are asleep at the wheel!! You missed your chance with Ron Paul!!!
Tougemaster06 ....if so, why did the slaves become free after the war? Still, will someone answer my previous question: What do blacks want from whites?
I cant speak for all blacks, but I can say what I think... There has never been an apology. there has never been 40 acres and a mule, there is no acknowledgement, its as if it's been swept under the rug, and like it never happened, Kidnapping, Rape, Lynchings, Murder... when u ask what do we want from white ppl I must say its more from the government opposed to "white people" I like some white people just like I like some black people, all races have ignorant people among them
TheBoneRanger1968 .........I will not dignify you with answer my pet Gold Fish could give. Read my definition of Liberals. Liberalism is a disease. Obama, Jackson, Hillary and Bennett are Liberals. They will bring us down.
Hey.....off the record, really now, what will it take to please blacks. Like, what do you want?? An apology?? Big cash?? What the F * * K do you want?? We are really getting tired of the whining.......Geez, don't y'all ever shut up??
The definition of Liberalism has been totally re-defined by the democrats/Obama/Hillary. The dems/so called liberals are destroying the very fabric of our nation:
Abortion (Murder)
Homosexuality (Sodemy)
Anti Patriot Act (Let the terrorists win)
Surrender and Run (Cowards)
Planned Parenthood (Abortion/Murder)
Weak on Military (We will Die)
Pro Obama (All the above)
and most of all the democrats ranks are filled with anti american skum.
Obama's problems continue. He still has Meeks do deal with. He also has the Black Panthers, Ayers, Rezko, etc. in his closet. Obama has so many skeletons in the closet, if he gets in the White House it will become the Haunted House.
Historians like Dr. Bennett fall into the trap of judging historical figures by the mores of our times, and not of their own. That's unfair. Lincoln was as liberal a thinker as could be elected by white people of 1860. If he wasn't the South would'nt have succeeded. If he had not conducted the war as cautiously and conservatively as he did, the South would've won. Then where would African Americans be today. Otherwise his analysis is correct. So what! Lincoln is not running for office in 2008.
Lincoln however was a realist. He felt that eventually Slavery would wither on the vine of its own accord, but that to push its demise politically would cause a "house divided". The union had to be maintained. If that meant abolishing slavery he would do that. If it meant keeping slavery he would do that. The war allowed for the Emancipation Proclamation, an edict meant as a weapon against the South, nothing more. That doesn't mean Lincoln liked slavery. He just love the country more.
We can only go by Lincoln's own words, and they were he hated slavery. In the Lincoln Douglas debates, 1858's Illinois' Senatorial race, Lincoln responded to Douglas that he did know if Negroes were his equal intellectually,(presumably he felt he had to defer on this point, because emminent scientist of the day like Agassiz held that blacks were inferior), but that in terms, of being free and earning their own bread, blacks were every bit his equal. Pretty liberal thought for the times.
Hes Muslim, hes racist-everyone wants to talk about Hagge backing Mcain but what about Farrakhan backing Obama? Hes also a sexist!dont think so? find out a little about the muslim religion. there women are practicly slaves! why is america closing there eyes?
In Venezuela Hugo Chavez Gained the elections by rethoric and nice words....and people went crazy thinking they have found their saviour and look how they are now....In the same situation of CUBA! Obama can use nice words but I bet he has second intentions behind those words! LETS SEE IF A SONG IS GOING TO CONVINCE BIN LADEN, HUGO CHAVEZ, PUTIN AND THE REST OF THE STATES ENEMIES.....HILLARY IS EMOTIONLESS BUT ITS OK BECAUSE WE DONT NEED A CHARISMATIC BEAUTY CONTESTANT< WE NEED A PRESIDENT!
are you stupid?? check your stats man..chavez has take 200,000 people out of poverty by instituting a minimum wage and improving healthcare. He also has allowed blacks to have leadership positions in the army. Your latin and you dont even read your own news!
It's very interesting to see how people were critical of Obama, but I understand why he made his announcement when he did, and it had nothing to do with the State of the Black Union.
We need articulate people to represent. Language can be a barrier. We can actually understand what they are saying without punctuating every sentence with "nah I mean."
People should be judged for their TIMES! Lincoln was very progressive on the issue of racial equality for his time--you cannot take his views and fast forward them in history 150 years and then judge him.
This is similar to taking a black slave poet from 150 years ago and judging him based on his literary knowledge compared to modern scholars.
This shows you've read nothing serious about Lincoln and his true politics and intentions. He used African slaves as a political tool. The Civil war had nothing to do with slavery and had everything to do with centralizing a country that truly nothing more than a collection of bickering states. Wars are never fought for ideology. Ideology gives only the language and justification, but the intent is always economic. The very premise of war is an economic endeavor.
I am a History professor. Do you not think I know the reason why Lincoln freed the slaves. Regardless of the reason(s) why he freed the slaves they were freed. And people; black and white died over the freeing of the slaves. And what the fuck does this have to do with today? Black people need to focus on family and self development. Not what happened nearly a 100 years ago.
Why would ANY history professor urge someone to disregard events of the past? Do you not see the irony in that? What would be the point of teaching history if you tell people not to focus on the past? No way you teach history or anything else for that matter...I call you on your BULLSHYT! Focusing on history doesn't immobilize, it's called being informed..but hey, like you said what does that have to do with today? lololol..get the fuck outta here wierdo! lololol

History is the record of past events and times. Sometimes the past clouds the present. Someone said you have to know where you came from to know where you are going. For many there is no truth to the phrase. You can have history sure, but will you let history rule your life? It's good to know history, but also knowledge of the past holds us back. I love to read your response to that.
I really don't see why you made yourself apart of a conversation that didn't involve you. However, I have a few minutes to waste so I will address you and your concerns. First of all, I told the guy to disregard History because he is focusing on the wrong aspect of it. He is focusing on "trivial" shit. Who gives a damn as to why Lincoln freed the slaves. So what if he had interior motives? The point is they were freed.
Secondly, focusing on the point as to why Lincoln freed the slaves isn't as nearly important as bettering your neighborhood and SELF development. Why waste time examining "the why". Focus on how YOU can make HISTORY
You've presented a short sited proposition. "Why" is the most important and most difficult question to answer. How can you better your community if you're not aware of the tactics and motives that defeated previous efforts to do the same. Africans in the country have always fought to maintain their communities against a concerted effort to destroy them. And if things have not changed, then it it imperative that you have a firm understanding of what was done so you can counter it in the future.
Furthermore, the so-called "founding fathers" saw fit to look over a thousand years in the past to the Roman republic, Greek democracy and European history of the more recent past, when seeking to forge their "community", so why is it that we Africans are so attacked for doing the same? Perhaps there's something in our past that certain forces are desperate for us not to regain.
Furthermore, Abraham Lincoln never freed the slaves. He freed them where he couldn't and left them slaves where he could free them. It was only after the war and his death that slaves were actually freed, and it wasn't by his hand but by true abolitionists. If we look to them rather than Lincoln, then we'll have to look at their plans for integrating slaves in the American fabric. But they were quickly silenced, ex-slaves sent unprotected into the wilderness, and the myth of Lincoln was born.
What a brave man.

But just a man
seashell1111 1 year ago 2
@seashell1111 ..be that as it may, he still got in the way of freeing black slaves. So, I steer wayyyy clear of calling him "the best option". A close relationship with Douglas maketh not a better option, called Lincoln..lol, if I may be so flippant. Lincoln didnt have our best interest at heart because like most white people of that time, who cared less about slaves, he was clueless about our struggles...he wasnt chained in the belly of a ship, for weeks on end, starving. And he wasnt a slave..
MisterCrazyLegs 1 year ago
I'm not sure what you mean specifically by "got in the way of freeing slaves." That is a loaded statement, requires more info in order to respond. While he didn't necessarily internalize a mindset of equality for black slaves, he did what most white men would not have done - whatever his motives. By best option I'm speaking in terms of the other candidate on the ticket when he was elected/re-elected. I don't idolize Lincoln, but I do give credit where due. Again just a man.
seashell1111 1 year ago

blackreign2012 1 year ago

We have to remember the education he had, it wasn't the local public school curriculum.
averitas 3 years ago
Where did I say that he didn't know about the State of the Black Union a year before he announced his candidacy for President?? Obama made a smart political move by not attending this event, because he knew that from the very beginning he had to present himself as a candidate for all Americans, not just Blacks. Tavis was/is still salty toward Obama because Obama refused to stroke Tavi's ego by attending this event.
sweetscorp 3 years ago 3
Tavis is not the spokesperson for Black America, so he should humble himself and realize that just because Obama doesn't attend his yearly event doesn't mean that he doesn't care about the Black community. So now you're going to pull the "Obama isn't black enough" argument? Please.

Jollyoldstnick08 3 years ago 2
Yes, but still out of manipulation and the attempt to save one's ass. The Republicans did what what they did because they had to, not because they cared. And that speaks to us even today! So don't forget that.
Kelzo911 3 years ago
The Republican Party was founded as an abolitionist party. I agree abolition may not have occurred when it did were it not for the Civil War. Abolition was politically expedient when it occurred, but you are overlooking the fact that Lincoln was the first president of the first abolitionist party in the United States. It was not disingenuous.
Jollyoldstnick08 2 years ago
That's irrelevant when Lincoln absolutely separated himself from the abolitionists. He once said "If I could the save the union...but not abolish slavery...I would do it." Also, Lincoln didn't emancipate slavery, the Constitution did,(the Emancipation Proclamation was a military document that only mentioned the border states) Lincoln stated in his First Inaugural Address that he supported the Corwin Amendment, which would have made it illegal for Congress to abolish slavery.

Hey I was just wondering where it said that
Facebook289 2 years ago
Where what said what?
FATToney12 2 years ago
Lincoln said he wanted to deport African Americans
Facebook289 2 years ago
He said this in Illinois in a speech to Peoria,Illinois."My first impulse would be to free all the slaves, and send them to Liberia, to their own native land." Abraham Lincoln's mentor, good friend(probably best friend) and man whom he got most of his philosophy from, was Henry Clay. Clay was a slave owner from KY who had a nationalist look at America and a large central government.
FATToney12 2 years ago
It amazes me how many people praise this comment and have no clue what the "abolitionist movement" represented. It was much, much more complicated than just freeing slaves. To shortly help you understand FATToneys misled statements, some slaves were against the ideology of abolitionists. Furthermore,if you are so sure on Lincolns true stance (not just his political agenda), explain his stance during his second reelection campaign? Don't confuse a man with his title-even if that man is president.
QuestioningStupidity 2 years ago
It is hard to condense my response in one post If you read my other statements, you would know that I brought up the other issues of the abolitionists movement. Secondly, you can not equate Lincon with abolitionists because he clearly wasn't an abolitionist Lincon's campaign is irrelevant to his policies. During his first inaugural address, he supported the Corwin Amendment. Then, in his second term, the 13th Amendment. He appeased to both sides and contradicted himself.
FATToney12 2 years ago
@FATToney12
MisterHougy 9 months ago

Slaves were no longer needed because of machinery. So to have romantic feelings of Lincoln's agenda is false. If the "cotton jin" was not created along with other machinery then the slaves would have been enslaved for hundreds of years more.
UNICORNBLUE2008 3 years ago
The slaves were not able to make as much money as the machines would eventually make slave owners, thus releasing them unto their own. Not because of some spiritual revelation of guilt or the understanding of how horrific slave owners were it was all about greed and money.
UNICORNBLUE2008 3 years ago
The cotton gin was invented in 1793 and the first tractor was invented in 1796.The Emancipation Proc: The first one, issued September 22, 1862, declared the freedom of all slaves. It was about money/power/greed not an emotional feeling of how wrong it was to enslave people. Lincoln wasn't a hero to non whites.
UNICORNBLUE2008 3 years ago
Lincoln(slave owner) knew that keeping slaves and have the machinery would not be beneficial to them. They could make 100 times the money with machinery rather than have slaves to work the land. When the slaves were freed they did not have equal rights and couldn't get good paying jobs.
UNICORNBLUE2008 3 years ago

The fact remains that the social infastructure of an entire race was completely dismantled and didn't exist for over 200 years.
Now I am for personal accountability, but our forefathers(in social standing) did not take responsibility for what they did and the black race in America has been paying the price in blood ever since.
It is the same with the indigenous people of all of America.

What an illiterate.
He means "misrepresentation".
And that guy's mouth can barely, I mean barely, hang on to the consonants and vowels while he speaks. He is just not coordinated in that way.

Man oh Man, this country is circling the drain.
There is NO reconciliation among the races. The Zionists are about to do to Whites in America what they had the U.S. Military do to the Serbs.
You know what Lincoln would say to the Whites?

It's stupid people like you who just love to think black people are up in arms for no reason. MLK was about peace and loved every HUMAN BEING, even those who hated him. This country is a giant melting pot, which has been openly inviting all races into the U.S, then we have stupid people like urself who complain about this. In case you haven't noticed most people aren't rascist, you are taught by these "activists" that we all are. Don't let them change your views so they can profit from books and movies!! I say we all stop screaming rascism and just let people be as they are. Judge a man by character! (I'm a whitey if you are curious)

Sweetheart, most people don't "think" Whites are racist because of Black activist indoctrination, but by their own every day experiences and struggles for equality with them.
hwiseman 3 years ago
I think black people are more racist than white people in my own personal experience. I'm British and none of my white friends ever see colour. However in my experience black people always seem to refer to people as "my people." "We need to help my people escape poverty, my people do this and that..." If you only think about your own race that to me is racist.
DatFwad 3 years ago
we say my people for a variety of reasons. the most important one is till about forty years ago the only person helping us were our people. if for many generations the only person that was willing to help you was blacks when ever you moved to a new town you had to talk to blacks to find the safe places for you and your family. then you would understand. it is a leftover characteristic of different times. A tradition if you will.
and trust me your white friends see color just not in you.
djslay34982 3 years ago
I'm only 28 so 40 years ago represents a different time and age I would hope we have moved on from by now. Such 'traditions' need to be left in the past for the sake of unity. And my friends obviously don't see colour in me because I'm white but how can you say "trust me they do see colour" when you don't even know them?
DatFwad 3 years ago
Get out of here we still have traditions from thousands of years ago that still remain today they are extremely hard to remove.
40 years ago may be ages to you. but my dad is 50 my grandma 80 and 40 years is not that long ago.
Tell the Jews to move past the holocaust.Americans move past 9/11 and Pearl Harbor. or a rape victim to simply get over it.HELL a famine in Ireland more than 250 years ago caused the Irish people to be very out spoken about famine today.
djslay34982 3 years ago
You completely misunderstood my point and I actually take offense at the mere suggestion that I was insinuating anything like what you've put in your reply. Let me give you an example so I can make myself clearer. I'm British and in both World Wars millions of British men laid down their lives so I can enjoy the freedom I enjoy today. I will always remember the huge price they paid and will never forget how much we owe them. But do I still blame Germany for all those millions of lives (cont)..
DatFwad 3 years ago
And you somehow expect minorities to forget what happened to them 40 years ago?
oh and by the way it is human nature everyone sees color, under the right conditions our civility always break down.

are you serious dude? ok to sum it up in a nutshell
if you can tell me how many black celebrities apologized for being racist go ahead i will wait... ok ready? the answer is none!! how many white celebs? this is minor but its just an example. also where's the black kkk taking white men, women, kids, and pets from their homes and hanging them for fucking centuries! name one one group thats black that did that!! also ask ya white frens how many of them would accept a black man as their brother in law

9/11 was an inside job
EVIDENCE:In 11.September collapsed not only twin towers, but World trade center 7(WTC7) building too, even it was not impacted by airplanes. 9/11 was planned earlier.WTC7 collapsed in 11.september 17:20. In the same day you can not plan and put bombs. It proves 9/11 was planned by USA officials, CIA.

I am now personally paying for blacks and I wont apologize.......what for?
lanainfla 3 years ago

The definition of Liberalism has been totally re-defined by the democrats/Obama/Hillary. The dems/so called liberals are destroying the very fabric of our nation:
Abortion (Murder)
Homosexuality (Sodemy)
Anti Patriot Act (Let the terrorists win)
Surrender and Run (Cowards)
Planned Parenthood (Abortion/Murder)
Weak on Military (We will Die)
Pro Obama (All the above)
and most of all the democrats ranks are filled with anti american skum.

donottake 3 years ago
Historians like Dr. Bennett fall into the trap of judging historical figures by the mores of our times, and not of their own. That's unfair. Lincoln was as liberal a thinker as could be elected by white people of 1860. If he wasn't the South would'nt have succeeded. If he had not conducted the war as cautiously and conservatively as he did, the South would've won. Then where would African Americans be today. Otherwise his analysis is correct. So what! Lincoln is not running for office in 2008.
bobbeth6 3 years ago 2
Lincoln however was a realist. He felt that eventually Slavery would wither on the vine of its own accord, but that to push its demise politically would cause a "house divided". The union had to be maintained. If that meant abolishing slavery he would do that. If it meant keeping slavery he would do that. The war allowed for the Emancipation Proclamation, an edict meant as a weapon against the South, nothing more. That doesn't mean Lincoln liked slavery. He just love the country more.
bobbeth6 3 years ago
We can only go by Lincoln's own words, and they were he hated slavery. In the Lincoln Douglas debates, 1858's Illinois' Senatorial race, Lincoln responded to Douglas that he did know if Negroes were his equal intellectually,(presumably he felt he had to defer on this point, because emminent scientist of the day like Agassiz held that blacks were inferior), but that in terms, of being free and earning their own bread, blacks were every bit his equal. Pretty liberal thought for the times.

Not what happened nearly a 100 years ago.
sosouthernsofreaky 3 years ago
Why would ANY history professor urge someone to disregard events of the past? Do you not see the irony in that? What would be the point of teaching history if you tell people not to focus on the past? No way you teach history or anything else for that matter...I call you on your BULLSHYT!
Twilliams97 3 years ago
I really don't see why you made yourself apart of a conversation that didn't involve you. However, I have a few minutes to waste so I will address you and your concerns. First of all, I told the guy to disregard History because he is focusing on the wrong aspect of it. He is focusing on "trivial" shit. Who gives a damn as to why Lincoln freed the slaves. So what if he had interior motives? The point is they were freed.
sosouthernsofreaky 3 years ago
Secondly, focusing on the point as to why Lincoln freed the slaves isn't as nearly important as bettering your neighborhood and SELF development. Why waste time examining "the why". Focus on how YOU can make HISTORY
sosouthernsofreaky 3 years ago
You've presented a short sited proposition. "Why" is the most important and most difficult question to answer. How can you better your community if you're not aware of the tactics and motives that defeated previous efforts to do the same. Africans in the country have always fought to maintain their communities against a concerted effort to destroy them. And if things have not changed, then it it imperative that you have a firm understanding of what was done so you can counter it in the future.
iArsalan 3 years ago
Furthermore, the so-called "founding fathers" saw fit to look over a thousand years in the past to the Roman republic, Greek democracy and European history of the more recent past, when seeking to forge their "community", so why is it that we Africans are so attacked for doing the same? Perhaps there's something in our past that certain forces are desperate for us not to regain.
iArsalan 3 years ago
Now you are splitting hairs my friend. I said History is important but do not focus on trivial events. However, you did pose a good argument.
sosouthernsofreaky 3 years ago
Furthermore, Abraham Lincoln never freed the slaves. He freed them where he couldn't and left them slaves where he could free them. It was only after the war and his death that slaves were actually freed, and it wasn't by his hand but by true abolitionists. If we look to them rather than Lincoln, then we'll have to look at their plans for integrating slaves in the American fabric. But they were quickly silenced, ex-slaves sent unprotected into the wilderness, and the myth of Lincoln was born.
iArsalan 3 years ago
