It's not the economy. The property tax rate is way out of wack. If those property taxes were to be held at $500. per year. People would buy them and rebuilding them would generate more revenue. At $8,000 per year not going to happen.

It's a beautiful area with these brick mansions; if you could renovate these houses and fill up the gaps with some affordable housing it could become a nice area to live. People need to get together and makes some new ideas without the developers involved.

We made our more difficult prodcut in Taiwan and the rest all over S.E.China. I would never blame the people there for our economic woes here in the USA. Yes in a way Detroit is one big movie set, but it is real and it is living. In this sense, there are no adventure films or amusement parks that could ever compare.
Detroit may be a bombed out ruin, but it is also the world's most photogenic petri dish. Mock Detroit's school system if you wish, but all this misery breeds talent, the likes of which no school could ever hope to mimic. For certain subject matter and for those sufficiently motivated, this city is in fact one of our nation's best schools. Why is it not looked on and protected as a national treasure?

This reminds me of another large city I used to live in. The roads in the bad part of town were complete garbage until you got to the entertainment district that contained sports venues and amusement parks.

george did a good job but like all of us from detroit can tell you, its been this way for a long time. there is an entrenched culture of greed and nepotism in the city government and its the same in the public school system. when they tried to audit the DPS the auditor was finding scraps of paper which served as documentation for 750,000$ payouts to contractors who worked out of a post office box. no one could say what work was performed or who exactly did it. there were hundreds of these.
the abandoned buildings have been here for a long time. residents in the city set abandoned homes on fire because the city refuses to tear them down. thats the only way to get rid of them. arson. the leadership of detroit has been corrupt for many years the improvements you see in the downtown area are from private investors mostly.
Detroit has been in an economic decline for almost thirty years. A lot of those abandoned buildings look like that have been that way for a long time.
It's not fair to say the place is like the Third World. The Third World never had something nice to let it ruin and actively destroy it in the first place.

I was in Vegas this past weekend and one minute we were on the strip and the next we were driving by blocks filled with homeless people sleeping in tents and sleeping bags, it was very sad.

It's easy to just say that "they're homeless in a gambling town and therefore probably did it to themselves", but whether or not that is true, what IS true is that the casinos are taxed so little that they provide almost none of the city infrastructure. The rest comes from ballot initiatives which are usually voted down. Vegas will go down next.

I live in Hong Kong. Here we have: a 16% maximum tax rate, a government with no debt, and a huge surplus. New rail lines to China being built, costing billions.
People work d@mn hard here, and do not expect handout from the government. 10 minutes walk from where I live is Mong Kok (crowded corner), the densest habitation on the planet. If people want to live in a house, they pay a huge land premium to the government. USA, you have much to learn, as you sink into poverty.

We made our more difficult prodcut in Taiwan and the rest all over S.E.China. I would never blame the people there for our economic woes here in the USA. In reality the "abandoned" area in north in Detroit proper of Comerica Park is coming back -- or was, prior to the meltdown. Half the houses there are being lived in or are ready-to-move-in condition with RE signs out front. But the areas Detroit and its suburbs that are totally abandoned, that's the future of this country, right there!

this is also the most racialy polarized city ive ever seen. 8 mile road is like a DMZ between white and black. previous city administrations were so antagonistic toward any investment from the suburbs that even good faith investors were driven away. an excellent current example is cobo hall where the international auto show has always been held. the city of detroit wont relinquish even a portion of control in return for 200 million in investment from the suburbs. so we will lose the autoshow too

george did a good job but like all of us from detroit can tell you, its been this way for a long time. there is an entrenched culture of greed and nepotism in the city government and its the same in the public school system. when they tried to audit the DPS the auditor was finding scraps of paper which served as documentation for 750,000$ payouts to contractors who worked out of a post office box. no one could say what work was performed or who exactly did it. there were hundreds of these.

the abandoned buildings have been here for a long time. residents in the city set abandoned homes on fire because the city refuses to tear them down. thats the only way to get rid of them. arson. the leadership of detroit has been corrupt for many years the improvements you see in the downtown area are from private investors mostly.

Isn't that just disgusting? And the saddest thing is that a LOT of those homeless are kids. It's easy to just say that "they're homeless in a gambling town and therefore probably did it to themselves", but whether or not that is true, what IS true is that the casinos are taxed so little that they provide almost none of the city infrastructure. The rest comes from ballot initiatives which are usually voted down. Vegas will go down next.
