@faraday1945 - I know that this is a REAL mental "wiring" issue. However, what is being disputed is the use of medications for adolescents - those with side effects including death. Stimulants are NOT consistently proven. They only sometimes work yet the pharmaceutical companies push these medications about as much as OxyContin, a synthetic opiate. Psychiatric meds effectiveness all depend on the individual. I'm glad you found what works for you but for another, it may not.
Kids and adults have all these 'mental disorders' put on them cause being out standing as a human being is not socially exceptable anymore, is a bunch of crap. I never went to a doctor when I was a kid and teenager to be diagnosed something just to put on drugs. Being human is what it means to have all these 'mental disorders'. Being human is hard and you can't put a label on any child that is learning about their emotions and the world. Parent your child like you should and they will be happy.
These drugs companys and doctors are con artist. I hope they burn in hell with these harmful meds shoved down their throats for the all of eternity!!!.
To those who believe in ADHD, AD, ACDC and whatever lable you where given... YES the down feeling excites but to believe a Drug will cure it is off the rails. I've had first hand experience with friends and not one, not one has been cure, they all were out there and
@faraday1945 Hard-wired? No!....BUT... Behavior problems? Perhaps!....We live in a society that is becoming more and more self absorbed and want quick fixes like drugs for complicated behavior issues. Instead of trying to find out **why** the child is acting out and working on solutions that may take longer and involve the whole family, they label the kid with the entire family problem. The poor kid is lead to believe he is defective. That is a sad state of affairs!
ADHD is totally real, but that doesn't mean you should put kids on drugs because of it. It's a phenotype; it's just part of the genetic diversity of humanity. There are different 'types' of people. Some are more sensitive, some are more empathetic, some have lots of energy. To say you should ablate the unique attributes of these people is a fundamental type of racism, because there is a more meaningful genetic difference between genes coding for personality than those coding for skin colour.
Let's pretend we had no medicine - that we had to live with all our imbalances, our hyperactivity, our high-arching highs and our immeasurably painful lows? Would we really kill ourselves (more than the suicide rate is now), or would we ADAPT - that is, if society is progressive enough to embrace our differences? This would be idealistic, agree? The medical profession think they are progressive, and that medicine will stabilise our imbalances...yet 13 yr olds are self-harming, overdosing.Curious
A panel of psychiatritst are VOTING wether or not ADHD is a illness because there is NO PROVE. (See DSM-5) We're talking very addictive legal drugs here. Realize what the word addictive really means. You'll never get off this brain-damaging very toxic drug. Show me one independed research (no farmaceutical Industry involved) with real prove of the existence of ADHD. ADHD is no more than another word for unwanted behavior.
Doctors should be checking for the APO-E3 protein when diagnosing ADD. ADD is a mild form of mercury poisoning and is easily cured by chelation to remove that mercury from the brain.
You can now stop your bogus arguments that promote two positions which are both wrong.
@faraday1945 You say people are hard-wired this way. A statement like that requires proof. You can prove a positive statement that is true. Please do so or expect to be ignored or abused.
I have a friend with a 7 yr old extremely rambunctious child who has been diagnosed with ADHD and is very disruptive within the family unit. Yet, if I were to feed my young children the same level of preservative-stuffed foods and fizzy drinks, along with all the technology laden stimulation - I would expect the same. Very often, there is no evidence of positive parenting strategies, diet management or discipline from parents or carers and surely this contributes to the diagnosis of ADHD.
@faraday1945 Sort of a weak argument actually, because the DEA criteria is what sets ADHD drugs apart as highly additive. So you've pretty much made our point. And regarding morphine, no one is injecting kids with morphine because they fidget in their seat or stare out the window, or lose pencils or toys which are exact criteria for an "ADHD" diagnoses. But they are being administered drugs that the FDA admits can cause stunted growth, dependence, heart attack stroke and death.
@CCHRInt You're trying to connect two unconnected dots here. You're basically saying that the negative effects of methylphenidate (Ritalin/Concerta) somehow negates the underdevelopment of an adhd person's neocortex. I don't understand how this makes sense to you, assuming that you are relatively intelligent. Which is of coarse a generous assumption considering your position on the topic.
@faraday1945 Yes but "characterized gene" doesn't mean anything. If you read the medical journals,
they're STILL "trying" to find an ADHD gene. The NIM, NIMH, HHS, APA all admit there is no "ADHD gene" that has been found. So characterized is another way of saying...nothing. All drugs do have side effects, but unlike other drugs, they are not being doled out to millions of children when no one can prove there is anything MEDICALLY wrong with them. There are NO medical tests for ADHD. None.
Wow @faraday1945 Its hard to know where you begin your education
1) There is no genetic/biologic proof of ADHD. None. If you have it, provide it. Because you'd be the first person on planet earth to prove it. 2) The FDA has warned Ritalin & other ADHD drugs can cause heart attack, stunted growth, sudden death. 3) The DEA classifies Ritalin in the same class of highly addictive drugs as cocaine, morphine & opium due to its high potential for abuse.
In every medication you're going to have side effects! I don't agree with you. I have ADD and I KNOW I have ADD. The medicine helps me in so many ways. The side effects are bad.. But most ADD/ADHD medications don't have to be taken periodically. I can take my Focalin XR one day and then not take it the next. Some kids take it only when they are taking a test in school and need a "focus-boost". It's not a label. You can SEE the difference in kids that do have it and kids that don't. You are wrong
This is not right! I mean for some is the medcin helping and for some not... But forthhose how get help by the medcein and get a better life then i dont think that it dose matter if it is a drug! I mean i have got to now i have ADD now when i am 19, but before that had i done evrything i could to get better. I mean EVERYTHING! But now i have start take concerta and its helping me!
@Ylva You think its easy to concentrate? Boo fucking hoo. I was diagnosed with ADHD but its a load of garbage. I think your brain has been reprogrammed over time to say ì cant concentrate unless i have methylphenadate`. These drugs are TOXIC. You have probably been convinced you have it because everyone has told you that you have it your whole life. You must have fucked up parents.
I have ADHD. The Damn pills i'm currently taking really doesnt feel like its doing much. The most its doing for me is causing depression and eating disorders. But I do my best to catch up on my eating. ATM my weight isnt 2 bad.
This is because I haven't identified the cause. With tiredness, we naturally honor the null hypothesis and identify the cause as lack of sleep - not an illness. With sadness and hyperness, we need to do the same thing and honor the null hypothesis. The causes could be nutritional deficiencies, lack of friends, lack of challenges, or other problems that need to be handled by actual scientists. The whole, "Illness by elimination" is bullshit, not science, and is the reason creationism =/= science.
My older son had ADHD so I had him participate in baseball, basketball, bowling, martial arts, track, skiing & tutored growing up.He's an engineer now. I was a strict disciplinarian not only towards my sons, but all. My kin would send their kids to me to "straighten out." The kids joke about it now recalling how terror seized them when threatened to be sent to "Auntie". They are all doing well; all loving, caring young adults. Love+Discipline+Guidance+Sportsmanship, etc-Best medicine for most.
I have children that ARE ADD ADHD and it took many months of testing to get them diagnosed. And many more months to decide if they were gong to go on medication. DO NOT sit there and tell me and my family that there is no such thing. My husband suffers from it as does his mother. There is a family history of ADD. Sometimes it can be the result of poor nutrition but NOT in our case. We have always fed our children well and follow Canada's Food Guide.
You're a bitch. ADHD is real. I know because I've had to struggle with it my WHOLE LIFE. btw I don't take drugs for ADHD so there are no "Side effects" I just can't focus, or pay attention, or stand still naturally. It is a desease. When a machine shows that my brains is going completely fucking crazy for no reason, that tells me something is wrong. The drugs perscribed are bs tho. But please. Don't say that something that people are born with, doesn't exsist.
@CatarinaWimark You don't need toxic drug to treat a problem, these drugs never cure the symptoms, just a transient relieve of the symptoms. healthy nutrition is the key, that why children are so irritable and anxious and is simply because of severe malnutrition which lead to distracted attention.
