I don't know if I have Tourettes but, I've had various facial tics like Eye, Mouth and Eyebrow and finger tics I've done my whole life, people think I'm smiling when they're being serious or when my eyes roll up a bit and my eyebrows lower they think I'm pissed when I'm NOT. And I have to explain everything so I'm not insulting them. I just call them Tics and not Tourettes.
i remember when i was in elementary i would blink a lot and do a not so noticeable head nod...tell you the truth i had a hard time with it for various reasons but then i just didn't have a care for what people thought...now I'm 21 and i guess I'm lucky that my tourettes was so minor from the beginning that the only thing i do and its very rare now is bitting down as if I'm chewing gum but i catch myself very quickly and stop.
Always remember to be supportive of your son and speak to your close friends and family about his condition so that they don't draw attention to the tics or ask "what's wrong with him?" Sorry for the long posts, I just hope your child has a better life dealing with it than I did.
Now I'm getting a Masters in International Relations and National Security and Foreign Policy (mouthful) so I want to assure you that just because your son is afflicted with this HELLISH condition, doesn't mean he will lead a bad life or be unsuccessful. The most important thing is that you don't draw attention to his tics, just ignore them. My father was an abusive alcoholic so he'd constantly make fun of me when I had a tic, which made me more self conscious and worsened the tics.
Sorry for all the posts, but I have a lot to say about this because I know your child's suffering well. If you have any questions or just need to talk to someone who has dealt with this for all 24 years of his life, feel free to send me a message and I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you may have to the best of my knowledge. In my undergrad years I did study a lot of pharmacology and anatomy because I wanted to be a doctor (before I found out I'm squeamish lol).
I'm now almost 24 years old and just finishing up my Master's Degree in grad school so it's important not to let it slow you down. I also have OCD which is controlled mostly through Sertraline (Zoloft) at a very high dose of 300 mg. How is the Clonidine working? Do you find he is extremely sleepy? I doubt he'd have sexual side effects at that age but these drugs are very strong and it concerns me that he's on them at such a young age.
In addition, the risperidone (Risperdal) caused severe sexual problems like anorgasmia, erectile dysfunction, etc. In fact, it almost makes it impossible for that part of your body to feel pleasure. Having a healthy sex life is important for my mental well-being and I was so miserable on the risperidone that I'd rather suffer and be without it than have a hellish life with it. Most of the medications to treat Tourette's are in the same class as the risperidone so the side effects are similar.
My tics started about that age as well. Over time, they actually got worse and now it's just a part of daily life that I have to try to conceal. I have tics like blinking, grimacing, head shaking, sniffling, eyebrow raising, etc. I've tried lots of medications but the side effects are just terrible because the neuroleptics used to treat the tics are very potent antipsychotics. Risperidone was the most effective but it made me so fatigued I couldn't function. I started missing work and school.
I honestly don't see anything wrong with him. He looks like a regular healthy little boy. I couldn't really see/notice any tics...and the ones that I did somewhat notice was only because there were subtitles to describe the scene. Having said that, he is an adorable little boy =)
@jacg0812 Hi! I also have Tourette tics and I also possess an extreme ability; I am really good at languages, social sciencies, and life sciences. I'm only 23 (almost 24) and I already speak 4 languages fluently and I'm working on more. I think that so much intellectual power is forced into our brains that it just goes crazy! =)
My son rolls his neck all the time and he does this thing with his mouth at the same time like hes biting in the air(hard to explain) well i work at a hospital with some of the best neuro docs and one suggested botox injections in the jaw muscles for the mouth thing and stuff...have you heard of this or anyone going thru this...i will try and post some videos soon so you can see exactly what im talking about, but ive been hearing it could be dystonia, tourettes, how do you which is which

Thanks everyone. To all of you who have similar tics or kids with tics the best you can do is record it while you think they are most active. He has been on 2.5 MG of Clonidine for quite awile now and the majority of his large tics such as his neck rolling and the wrist and finger hyperflexion have stopped
I notice he gets much worse when under stress and when he plays the Wii. Or DSi both of those things cause adrenaline surges.

@mysarip all this twitching can be controlled through buddhist meditation and focusing on the carpet for a long time practicing being still like a statue and herbal drinks also, MENTAL HEALTH IS THE MIND PLAYING GAMES BECAUSE THERE IS TOO MUCH INFORMATION GOING THROUGH THE MIND AT THE SAME MOMENT TELEVISION AND VIDEO GAMES,also i forgot to mention sports also cure twitching because the mind learns to focus, most children who twitch have no friends or have been seperated from friends.
You are so wrong on so many levels. Do you have this condition? It is caused by a chemical imbalance and your homeopathic remedies cannot change it. In fact, these tics make life so stressful so that achieving the Buddhist state of meditation is practically impossible.
oh i am sooo glad u posted this,, my son looks exactally the same but am finding it hard to get any1 to listen to me.. people look at him on the bus as my sons movements are the same although he getts the urge to stretch open his eyes and mouth. all i get from proffesionalls is try to record it although proven difficult as its not 24/7 although i thimk thats its a case of some days are worse than others and its the bad days that they are most noticible xx
had it all my life, my twitches last a month or two then change. the harder i try to control it the worse it becomes. Dont worry i never got picked on because of it and all myu family and friend are so used to it the dont even notice.
Yeah, this can be really annoying and distract other people. Mostly it becomes embaressing (people ask me I'm "alright" and can kind of hurt when it's bad. Thankfully it doesn't seem to happen while sleeping.

They don't seem to be that problematic. They don't seem to give him trouble with writing or normal activities like some tics can. Good luck to him~
