A great pianist who had no problems playing four concertos in one concert. This is a lovely performance. She was underrated by the snobs of music because she was glamorous, changed her dress during recitals and appeared in films. She was very popular especially during the war years when she brought colour to the war torn bombed cities of the uk.
Beautiful! Virtuosity, great expressiveness and lovely sound - ideal combination. Must investigate other Eileen Joyce recordings of Faure. Marguerite Long gives what is perhaps a more bravura performance which I also like very much, but I prefer Eileen Joyce's.
Eileen Joyce was one of the best 20th century pianists. What a pity she was so underrated... why would a Myra Hess or Clara Haskil be more appreciated? Much as I love and appreciate the two, Ms. Joyce was no worse just because she played in films.

A wonderfully talented pianist, who unfortunately sold herself cheap in performing so often in movies, and therefore was not always taken seriously. Pity.
If you ever get a chance to see the movie, "A Girl in a Million" you'll see Eileen Joyce playing part of Cesar Franck's Symphonic Variations. She looks so happy as she plays this most joyous of music.
I remember going to many of Eileen Joyce's recitals. She always wore a beautiful dress and surprised the audience by changing into a different one after the intermission. She was always on the BBC either as soloist or with an orchestra..
I can understand now why a critic in London said that england did not need Svatoslav Richter when he appeared there for the first time, as there were enough good pianists in the country. And that was right: Myra Hess and Eileen Joyce were certainly among the pianists he was thinking about.... You are really lucky to have been able to hear her....
@uhartchristian Don't forget Moura Lympany - another great, great pianist who never had the renomé of Hess, Haskil or Novaes, but was terrific. How about Eunice Norton? Thank God for YouTube where we can rediscover these tremendous, lesser-known keyboard giants.
@Mapesbury100 - I wished I could have seen her- her playing is extraordinary- one of the most deserving artists I ever heard- I am trying to find her recordings especially the 1st & 3rd Chopin Ballades-
Marvellous, superfine silky speedy, always expressive, and meltingly moving in the lyrical tune. Hard to imagine better. One of the great virtuosi. Thank you so much.
A fine pianist who in her day had a big career (she can be heard on the sound tracks of the 1940s films "Brief Encounter" and "The Seventh Veil"). She's mostly forgotten today, but undeservedly so--thanks for these treasurable posts!

Beautiful playing! I prefer this to Marguerite Long's slightly more 'bravura' performance- though that is also wonderful.

never again this composition was so well interpreted.
the tempo is breathtaking as ever with this pianist.
But also the expression and phrasing here are "sublime"....
