this kind of wedding are way prettier!!!!! and also very important, they kowtow to heaven and earth as a strong promise. well, i dislike how the hmong today did it...just went on making the groom drunk.....lecturing them for a long time like they know what's going on.....
This isn't just a Miao video, the clothing clearing had a lot of Yao (Mien) influence to them. Actually I believe I saw some of the woman dressed in full blown Yao traditional dresses. I don't believe you can call this just a representation of a Miao wedding, because it obviously is not. Perhaps the theater company wanted to make sure that all the highlander minorities were represented. That would make a lot of sense.
In Ancient time, our Hmong in China have lavish marriage ceremony that are similar to many Han wedding. The bride ride the groom around the houses, kneeling before the parents and elders and huge party. These big festival decline after the end of the Miao Prosperous Age in China according to Folktales. Even today in China, some Miao groups still have big wedding... the Miao in Southeast Asia do not do this because they don't have the resources to have big wedding. LOL
Lusheng or the Qeej was used to play as part of the wedding ceremony but somehow they stop partically with the Miao in Southeast Asia. I'm not sure why. This is a very interesting video on the Miao Wedding. I'll have to ask several elders from my community more about it. If the song is in the Miao language, it's probably the East Miao dialect in China especially the Miao in Guizhou.
Interesting video. I heard a legend or story that the Miao (Hmong) wedding used to be like this. Both ancestors had to kowtow or bow to their ancestors but somehow it only became a man's duty. I heard from a elder that if the Miao in Southeast Asia and in the Western Countries to have this type of wedding they still can.
