Im more old school use to dealing with dail up. when we got 2x, 4x, or more I was amazed. I rember when we measured in bytes rather then bits. They do it in bits now to make it seem like its more then it really is. And I think they lie about it too, because 250giga bits a second is like downloading portal 2 in 5 seconds. and most people with that apparent speed takes more then 45 min to hours.

Belgian provider Telenet used to have a max cap of 60, then upgrated it to 100gb cap because of the complains. And now we have a fairuse cap (around 200gb cap) They call it 'unlimited'. This is upload and download combined. I pay 80 euros/mouth for it.

Australia's always had caps, and it does suck. At least they have been improving them. For instance, in the last year my cap has gone up from 12GBp/m to 20GBp/m to 50GBp/m. 50 still isnt great, but at least it is very doable (lol ;))

I have Comcast Docsis 3.0, currently have 100mbps/Dnlwd-15mbps/Upld, and currently there is no usage restrictions. Im definitely spoiled with my internet, but my home network is also very large, and with the slower service packages, its near un usable. In my old house, I had optimum, from the very start of cable internet, with 300mbps/D-100mbps U, no restriction.  That was before the service providers started charging for higher speed service.

I have Comcast DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem, 30-50 Mbps down and 4 Mbps up with a 250GB monthly cap. If I go over the 250GB limit I get a phone call from Comcast. If I do it again I get banned from using Comcast internet for a year. I know about the one year ban because they clearly state this in their terms of service. If somebody uses more than 250GB it is probably to back up their computer to an online server. Other than that most people don't do that (unless you are constantly torrenting/loading webpages every second). The bandwidth cap is reasonable unless you are running some kind of web server, max I have probably gone is probably about 50GB.

I was on LIVE one night and I was lagging like crazy. I went to speedtest/pingtest to check stuff. I was capped at 1 up for 3 nights in a row starting at exactly 1AM. I couldn't even walk around in a game it was so horrible. I'm currently with Armstrong Cable.

When the providers talk about traffic on the network, it's bullshit. Bandwidth is infinite. Bandwidth is cheap. It costs less the a couple of cents for a gig of bandwidth. Look at our cellphone plans here in Canada. Its fucking ridicoulous.

The reason they can't have unlimited bandwidth is because if they do that, people would start downloading lots of things like crazy and that will overwhelm the servers and the internet speed will be slowed down for everyone in their provider. Then people would complain. That's why they have to have these caps.

Canada is actually running out of IP addresses. This summer they will be shutting down internet usage periodically, and possibly turning away from using IP addresses. The change is happening now. That is why internet providers are putting caps and what not.
