  • yawn this is boring

  • @3musketeers0 not as boring as your unoriginal comment

  • Roving 氏は伊達政宗が好きなのか

  • Terribly impressive outfit, by the by.

  • They do not look like viking to me, I'm from Iceland, where you can see good viking fight, not so faggy fight like in this video

  • @mrhardone

When you have 3000+ people taking part, along with 100+ cavalry, every society has to hold back, and has to follow the script of the actual battle. None of us can lay in as hard as we would normally as discipline on both sides has to stay in place, for both acuracy and safety

  • It was a dark day for the English language to. Now we have all these damn French words mucking it up.

  • would you much more prefer to talk like this?

æledfýr which is flame of fire in old english

  • All of our swearwords are Saxon. A few surviving Saxon words and their Norman equivilant. Freedom/Liberty. Bold/Courageous. Worthy/Honourable. House/Mansion. Wood/Forest. Fort/Castle. Saxon swearwords- Prick, dick, Cunt, Wanker, Shit, Fuck. Alot of our languge still survives, and other bits of it are slightly changed. Some people in the West Country still use Old English words.

  • @Urinesauce I would like to check my DNA to find out where I am from, hope it isn't Normandy. I was born in West Yorkshire so hoping Saxon.

  • The arrows have blunt rubber covered tips. Nevertheless, wouldn´t be good to get hit in the eye :-( unfortunately one guy did, since he was looking at the arrows flying towards him. The swords a real steel, but not pointy not sharp...of course. We want to play, not kill each other. I´ve been there in 2006 with the Franco Flemic Contingent..FFC. We were fighting on the norman right flank.

    Thorsaie

  • At the end, when the third division (including Regia Anglorum of which I was a member) were readying for the final assault and our death at your hands, two crossbowmen fired at us from the left flank and one guy got shot in the eye socket from less than 20 paces. Poor chap. Was a marvellous fight though :D

  • @Rauhbauty We might have met! I was on the Saxon left!

  • I think the music is amazing.

What is the name of the song?

  • The song is called "Farewell." It's from a Celtic Folk Rock band The Secret Commonwealth based in Tennessee though the singer is Swedish. The song is on their second CD. check out their myspace link in the sidebar.

  • Do they have rubber tips on the weapons too?

  • nope, theyre full steel

  • good recreation

  • I'm sorry,I know this is old,but could you tell me how they pulled the arrows off?Even with all of the armor,if they just blunted the tip I believe I saw someone look up while being fired on.

  • Arrows have a thick rubber tip.. They hurt lots.

  • I was there in 2006 and in 2007 and will be there in 2008, norman side, full center, your vdo is great, thanks a lot.

    :)

  • I do not hope my English am bad too. It is a mad video and I admires the whole people there each year goes through. I in so an event also gladly to go through to want however can certainly only certain people or? From nem normal knight camps one no chance to probably have however great video.

  • Hello! Battle of Hastings is studied in Poland too. Yeap we are learning of many great battles of all of the history. Cool video. Is this only one time reenactment or annual? We have something like this - Battle of Grunwald- evry 15th of July.

  • It's once a year around mid-October. Every year though its only a few hundred re-enactors. The big one such as the above involving close to 3000 all told is done every 5 years. The event is held at the actual site of the battle in the village of Battle at Battle Abbey.

  • October 14th,there is generally a large gathering of English to remember and pay homage to the last true English king.

  • im a hick from the new world saxon pig farmer if anyone ever was but the plantagenets were true english kings did they not lead the great chevauvee from dovers shore in revenge remember the lionhearted king we must stand together there is a new invader he claims to know gods heart he is mohammed son of satan

  • @lvcivs11

The plantagenets were all French, not English

  • @Bcronin1stknight sure born to the house of anjou which i couldnt even pronounce till my belle told me how does it really matter where pirate kings were born they gained the english crown and led us to glory along the way they learned to speak our language and intermarried with our people inside every frank is an english warrior trying to get out hahaha

  • Yes mate , every october on the weekend nearest the 14th English heritage stage the battle on the original battlefield, we lay wreaths of rememberance on the spot our last true Englisc king was killed. come on down.

  • @RoninDave

The next big Hastings reenactment will be in 2012

  • @Bcronin1stknight Hi there. Are you aware of any exact dates for this? can anyone just turn up to watch or will tickets be sold? Cheers.

  • how ironic. we english are known globally for being inperialist, but the reality is that the english have had a foreign dynasty forcibly ruling us for almost a thousand years. harold godwinson was the last true english king. although it is interesting, i had no idea 1066 was studied by foreigners too. thanx, good vid, good song

  • Of course it's studied in the US as 1066 is seen as a stepping stone towards the foundation of the US.

As for norman rule, England was basically occupied by a foriegn power until King John lost Normandy. Then the later kings were all england born and raised more or less.

  • Ugh, Harold Godwinson was an Anglo-Saxon, ie. a descendant of invaders himself. Before Ango-Saxons it was the Romans, before them the Celts and they were preceded by an older Indo-European people (or group of peoples).

(And simultaneously throughout this time period we have Viking and their descendants' invasions of England.)

  • which band is singing the song at back

  • check the description box. There's a link to their myspace account. . They are or were a local Celtic Folk Rock band from Nashville called the Secret Commonwealth. They put out 2 CDs.

  • This is a really cool vid. Thanks for posting it!

  • lets see now...hastings ...isnt that a pudding...yes a pudding me thinks...how odd that so many would die for a pudding...

perhaps i am missing some information ....maybe ignorantia mea magna est.....sigh...

  • What do you mean by best known and least known?

  • On one hand, the english-speaking world knows of "1066 and all that" but the exact details such as the battles of Fulford and Stamford Bridge and their impact on the Battle of Hastings is not well known.

  • Also the Anglo-Saxon period leading up to 1066 is often ignored or quickly passed over with a slight pause for Alfred the Great.

  • yeah most people think Alfred the Great is known for burning cakes though. My family is English but I was born and raised in Canada. here the Battle of Hastings isn't mentioned till high school and even then only if you choose to take Ancient History. So it isn't really beaten into school children's heads here. though both my parents who were brought up in Eng. say it was definately beaten into theirs.

  • theirs=thiers..... i know one of those is right.

  • I say it's beaten because it's one of those few dates that everyone in the english speaking world knows even if they don't know why bacuase it's a landmark date. Other dates would be for North Americans 1492 and 1776 for example.
