what prevented an immediate military attack on the "lifeboat" the instant that the hostage jumped overboard and started swimming, since the lifeboat was being watched so intently by countless military personnel, this quite possibly may have been the only time that the rescue could succeed. I do not any longer see a way to save the hostage, nor the pirates, since they are each insurance for the other.
