  • My apples are busy simmering....i'm following a recipe from my mums very ancient cook book....I vaguely remember her making crab apple jelly when i was still at primary school.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

  • Oh,you mean the jelly for bread...... Ah,just eat it up.

  • I thought crab apples are big..... They're that small?! That's crazy!

  • Thank you so much! Late last fall we moved to a place with a nice crab apple tree in the back yard! This year there is so much fruit I figured there HAD to be something I could do with it! This jelly looks delicious and I am so looking forward to making it! One thing though, how do you know when crab apples are ripe enough to pick?? Again, thanks!!

  • @mcescher1957 Crab apples are ready for picking from late summer onwards. Depending on variety, some turn red, some go yellow, others stay green.

  • I just made a batch according to this recipe. Worked great using 6 cups of jelly and 4 cups of sugar.

One question though, it seems like alot of other web sources tell you to remove the stems and cut the blossoms out. Any idea why?

  • @sessionfiddler Removing the stalks seems to me a complete waste of time. After the apples are boiled and then simmered, the pulp is strained which removes the solids.

  • thanks very much - easy to understand. I look forward to picking my crab apples any day now:)
