This is whu you do not fill gas cans unless they are sitting on the ground. The flow of the liquid creates a static charge which will create a spark. On the ground, the charge will go to the ground and not build up.

Fire extinguishers cannot handle a fire that size. The pumps would stop pumping as soon as he dropped the handle, but the gas that had already spilled is what is burning.

No. He was filling a gas can in the back of the truck. It caught fire and he pulled the nozzle out which spilled more gas. He should never have filled the can without placing it on the ground, and then once the fire started, he should have left the nozzle in place and tried to smother(cover) the whole thing

I'd never do that. My Dad is an assistant Fire Chief, so I got to see & hear all I needed to about it. But yeah, there's alot of idiots out there that don't know what ESD is capable of. Cell phones can do the same thing if you leave it on vibrate due to the brushes in the motor. I always turn mine off at a station, diesel, or not just because of the other cars filling up around me.
