This was always one of my favorite TCM intros. Chet Baker had a really beautiful voice. The great art work was by Edward Hopper. And yes, the edgier one they replaced it with is not as nice....
When I was in high school I set my TV to turn on TCM at 6am, and this would come on, what a beautiful thing to wake up to every morning. Now I'm in film school looking for inspiration and I still remember this vividly.
I always loved this promo, and as others have said it put you right in the mood for a precode film. Maybe that's why TCM changed it - they don't consistently play precodes in the morning anymore. On the other hand the new AM promo puts me in the mood to watch Roseanne - hopefully not the atmosphere they were aiming at.
Takes me back to my middle school and high school days when I'd watch TCM pretty much all day and night. Definitely takes you to a simpler state of mind.
Now, this clip just makes me feel good. I watch this clip every morning before I go off to work and it just puts me in a good mood. How can you have a bad day when you start it off by watching this?
@kjjgfkjjk ---I did the same thing in high school! I would fake sick and just watch TCM all day. None of my friends got it. I looooove this promo...I have a postcard with the Edward Hopper painting on my fridge. Memories...
I have found recollections of this intro, I too was very disappointed when TCM canned it for their new "hip" intro that doesn't set the mood for getting lost in a great classic film at all. This intro just always reminded me of a nice, quiet, tranquil Saturday morning when you were ready to just kick back and relax the rest of the day.
does anyone know the name of the song played during the commercial of "star of the month" on turner classic movies. That is another classic commercial. Btw thank you for puttin up this old intro of tcm brings back good memories.
YES! Thank you for posting this. What an awesome piece. I think I just replayed this a thousand times! I wish TMC still played it but what the heck now? Thanks again.
I am in tears thank you so much you kind, beautiful soul ... my grandfather is going through an illnes that could kill him and this is a song that I remember always singing with him before we watched a movie together. THANK YOU
It's one they play before a movie when it's late at night. Like it was played just now at 1:00am before a movie they played. Try watching a movie they play late-ish and look at the promo they play right before it. In the end of the promo it looks like they reenact the "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" painting (google it if you don't know which painting it is). I hope I help and make sense. lol.
HarleyQuinn0389- are you talking about the "Nighthawks" painting by Edward Hopper? the intro TCM plays late nights/earlyearly mornings...looks kind dated(like from the TCM's early days in the mid or late 90's or so) with characters 1930's style...with a kinda mellow, jazzy sound?
I always loved when they played a dark, depressing film noir after this cheery intro!

This intro dates to the mid-90s. It was created using Electric Image animation software. I remember because I had it on a promo CD.

This looks similar to the intros TCM plays nowadays before a movie that comes on in the mornings and afternoons(5/6am-ish to 3/4 pm-ish)
I've only had the TCM channel since December of last year(08) so I don't remember this song!

They used this intro here in America until recently, probably even 2008. I certainly prefer this classic intro to the current ones.
