hey i have a sprint hero cdma and its flashed to another service provider which is metro pcs. i have everything on it like internet and picture messaging but its on the 1.5 version and i want to update it, i heard if i do itll ruin the whole service and ill have to reset my phone but i dont know and i want to update it. so i need help please help!!
It really isn't too terribly challenging so I would recommend giving it a shot at least. You can't really brick the phone for good unless you yank the battery out while it's flashing something. There are many easy ways to get the phone back to stock if it seems like it won't boot.
Basic rule, if the phone turns on in ANY way it isn't bricked. If you see anything on the screen at all you can come back from that.
Yes but I would not recommend it in any way. It will choke horribly and make the phone lag on every browsing the home screen. Your battery life will also show you it's disgust by draining faster than a Drino'd kitchen sink.
Hey bro hows it going. just wanted to ask.....once the phone is rooted, does it matter WHERE the rom comes from or does it have to be from the place it was rooted?
The Damn htc hera is receivin updates i just got a ota update as they said theyd be done updating? Well sprint sent me a new one :D cant wait to see the changes once i see my fone done chargin.
Not done updating, just done updating Android. You will never see an official version of Android on the Hero past 2.1 from Sprint or HTC. There still will be minor software updates from time to time until it goes EOL. Which should be soon since there are some lower end phones that are almost as cheap as the Hero and have better performance. (LG Optimus, Samsung Transform, and the Evo Shift.)
@gibbygano are you a freshman? Android 2.2 os came out on htc evo, droid incredible, droid 1 and droid 2 came preinstalled with it in the time of your video. Next time do research. Google nexus one also.
@add119 Well, shoot, my bad. Found an article that basically confirmed your serious bash on my tech geek knowledge. My world would be crushed except I didn't do any research for this video because I was really just focused on the Hero, so I'm glad you're happy at least :D.
i have htc hero orange...will this work on it?i already have android 2.2 villain rom it is very unstable it gets stuck evry moment will this be any better?
Great work on this video, it really helped me out! Sorry about asking a general question, but: I am looking at getting a Hero and rooting it, etc, as you did but I'm concerned about the usual complaints about low battery life and freezing. About how long is the battery life on average for you and how often to you encounter rage-inducing glitches/freezes? Thanks!
General questions are fine, I was just getting irritated answering questions that I already provided answers to. As far as the Hero goes I would say that if you cannot afford anything else as far as the current gen Android phones for Sprint goes(those being the Evo and Epic) I would say go with the Hero. Once you slap Cyanogen Mod in there you will be very happy with the phone.
FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS AT THE PROVIDED LINKS!!! I have been answering the same questions over and over that are already addressed at the places you download the ROMs. I won't answer anymore questions on how to root or install custom ROMs.
okay i did everything and when i unlock it there is no apps in my home page, and when i do it it says tap here to start and when i do it does nothing?
$449 is without a contract renewal and that is actually extremely cheap. The phone is 200 at upgrade, not so cheap. The retail price is 150 dollars cheaper than the BB Curve 8330 was. Do your research before you bash pricing.
@dan123el1 Listen, there are about 3 different links in the under bar for Rooting the Hero and Cyanogen mod. Secondly, I didn't and will not make a video because there are PLENTY of them on youtube showing how to root and flash a rom. You need actually look.
they came out with an update it looks like, but im real confused, it says to update the radio if necessary, im still on 1.5 so im sure i might need it, but is it required?, also when it asks to do a nandroid backup, i did one when i rooted it, so do i hafto do one again?, then im clueless on what to do after im supose to download the cm6 rom, no1 talks about how to do it on the 1.5
There is no version of Cyanogen mod in existence that has anything from Sense UI. The Cyanogen mod team has made this abundantly clear even on the Evo. If you like the widgets from HTC I suggest trying LauncherPro Plus.
@SteelBlitz27 I use google voice. You have to have the service before you can use the app. I'm not really sure what you are talking about with the text messages.
@MarkC538 It's a mixed bag on that. There are some links on XDA Developers and other sites that let you download the .apks for the Sprint apps but there are issues with the apps not recognizing the phone as a Sprint device since the proprietary OS branding is not on there with vanilla Android OS.
Well I'm about to get the phone this weekend but I want to make sure I can get 2.2 on there before I buy it. I've heard of the huge difference 2.2 is from 2.1 and don't want to waste my money sticking with 2.1. Lol I am kind of tech savvy where I can follow a tutorial without getting problems but not as much as you I see.
Do I flash 2.2 during the process of rooting my phone on 2.1 or afterwards, and if afterwards, how do i do it?
@deadman80808 Also, I would strongly suggest NOT getting the Hero if you about to upgrade or get a new contract with Sprint. The HTC Evo and Samsung Epic are both out now and both are either already running 2.2 or will be soon on an official level supported by Sprint. These phones are also much faster with better hardware. The Hero WILL NOT be able to run flash 10.1, ever. So you will be missing out if you get the Hero now.
@gibbygano Well I can't afford to switch my plan... I'm on a budget in terms of the plan. Would you recommend the Samsung Intercept since it will have 2.2 in the future or try rooting the HTC Hero with 2.1 and then flash 2.2?
Also I think I found what you were talking about with 2.2. I have to download the CyanogenMod-6 to get the 2.2 features.
@deadman80808 Yes, Cyanogen Mod is 2.2. Your plan doesn't change from Hero to Evo or Epic except I have heard a rumor of 10 dollar charge for 4G. I am not certain that the Intercept will get 2.2 in the future because it is also limited on performance because of hardware. The Hero can still be quite expensive so that's why I suggested the Evo or Epic. The Evo, at many places, is only 50 dollars more to purchase with an upgrade than the Hero.
@gibbygano Well I'm not on a simply everything plan, I'm on an old family plan. I've worked out a situation where I can get the pro pack add on for $30 mo. and get to choose an android phone. I can't afford the 10 extra for the evo or epic because I'm on a budget with my dad. So besides the evo and epic it looks like hero is the next best phone
@deadman80808 Your choice. I strongly suggest looking into it further, though. If 4G is not available in your area you may not be charged the extra 10 anyways. I don't upgrade till February so I'm not sure if that is the case or not. I can tell you that besides the possible 10 dollars that you will have NO price difference what-so-ever with Sprint from one smartphone to another.
I've had quite a few questions from confused people lately so I'm just going to mention this again. If you are not tech savvy please do not attempt this. Rooting your Android device, while not extremely complex by any means, still has pitfalls for those who are not adept with computers or other tech. If you have never partitioned your HDD before and installed an OS(MANUALLY) then I would be very careful.
I'm on the xda developers website but I can't find the thread that you mentioned showed you how to root your phone to Android 2.2 (Froyo). Everywhere else online all I see are root tutorials for 2.1, mainly because I think 2.2 is new.
@gibbygano What do you mean by flash... sorry I haven't rooted it to 2.1 yet, but I have found a video tutorial for it. So you say just root it to 2.1 and then flash 2.2 over it? What do you mean by that?
@deadman80808 I'm not really sure how else to explain it. You root as instructed, you can't root up from what you are currently running. If you are running 1.6 you have to root to 1.6 then flash a rom for 2.1 or 2.2 after you root.
i strongly suggest to everyone who wants to flash this rom that they read the cyanogen mod website and thread on xda developers. it will help out and answear any questions better than i could.
Hi Gibby are you Ryan Blake? I'd have emailed direct but wasn't sure if that was a real or dummy Gmail account in the video.
