@CLEVELEFS If you want to see snap, look at his kumite. If he drew blood, it was the 70's, and most certainly control, was not his personal priority at that time. We live in much softer times now, in terms of even traditional Karate. If you don't execute technique with control in any modern dojo, Japan or otherwise, you can get in trouble. Do really think Yahara-sensei couldn't execute a perfectly timed snap punch at you or I, if he wanted. However, thrust (with extension,) is also a technique.
@CLEVELEFS The tsukiwaza (punches,) in Unsu are not snap punches. They are full-on slow-thrust, Bujutsu-oriented tsukiwaza. Although everything in modern day kata is about show, there are kata which require a different kind of technique, which may not look as flashy as Western-influenced Karate-ka, such as Valdesi display. In Karate unless you are a true master or expert as in anything else. Nothing is as it seems. His punches are exact and correct. Learn your subject.
@44Copperhead I Like him, But he was/is realy brutal.
In the first Unsu in this film, I was there in Budapest World Cup. We had training for a week morning / afternoon, along with the Japanish team.
Yahara has started only in individual and team kata . His techniques are very strong and the feeling was real. But far from perfection. No one would be victorious with this posture, only Yahara. In general, the Japanese had always bonus of each judge
@dgilliespie I have heard the things said about him that you point out. I do not know how much is true, but some of the punches he has thrown in the videos were not only late, but lacked the control that a master should exhibit. All of that being the case, his karate has the spirit and power that it was meant to have. It is the lack of that spirit that lead so many to question the effectivness of it. I would advise the karateka to take the spirit and ferociouness and include the code of bushido.

Not that you will ever read this or understand anything about this guy.
1 The kata is Unsu
2 Yahara was and still is a liar, thief and a assh**e
3 he makes momey as a street thug and beats up his students for fun
- he is detested by most other instructors

The man that jumps in Kumite is not Yahara, it´s Naka Sensei.
tokaidosan 2 years ago
@tokaidosan it IS Yahara Sensei !
Naka Sensei was probably still a very young boy at that time.

I really like the move in Unsu that you can see at 0:41. It looks like a combination of age uke in mid step followed immediately by gedan barai.
It reminds me of a downward samurai sword strike.

That's a life of dedication and love for the arth! Karate would be nothing without men like Yahara!
