@mastery910 no you don't. i just tried myself.derren is demonstrating how averages work. if you flip a coin 10 times you might get 10 heads and 0 tails. if you use a larger sample, the distribution should be dead even. in this video they don't use a very large sample, but they find out that the average estimate is correct, and that one was closer to the average than the others.

@mastery910 i did the average myself, and i'm telling you derren brown is right. the girl with the calculator is adding up the numbers he tells her and dividing by 21. i read your post and tried myself, and i got the same answer derren did. either you don't know how to calculate an average or you typed in something wrong. those numbers added up do not give you 3382... try again.

136 is wrong, I guessed 209, just on one side there are roughly 70 of them on just the visable side. (check at 1:55 if u want), cylinder shape, 14 around 10 in height would mean 140 on the outer side. It's roughly 6 from side to side. With plain mathmatics it would land on roughly 280. However my assumption has been in numeric favour so let's take away 10% as spill toll, also there are more balls on the right than on the left side meaning minus another 10%, landing it on ~227.

Clever Trick. Derren subtly suggests the numbers to each person without them knowing. They then "guess" that number. This way he has control over who picks the right number and what the total of all numbers will be. Basic Psychological Suggestion.

Concerning what he knew about the girl, all he had to do was write down all that information (i.e. Silver Jewelry, Bright Shoes, etc.) after seeing her and choosing her as the "accurate one". The only real "guess" was that her mother was an accountant

@yitzthegreat I think it'd be pretty hard to suggest 21 different three digit numbers to people all in the same place and seeing the same thing and it isn't necessary. It's happening by itself at least to an extent - a phenomenon called group intelligence.

He must have chosen the girl before-hand thus getting the info of the mother and cat and then suggested the right number to her somehow.

1. The 301s are different - D.B. substituted the original board with a false one, with pre-selected numbers.

2. He placed the scroll inside the jar when removing the lid - he obscured the view of the jar by the board.

3. There must have been an assistant - selected the person who guessed the number closest to the one on the board, prepared the scroll and gave it to the performer. Excess balls could have been removed (or extra added) together with the scroll.

@ermoulis you are correct, it must be a different board. Compare the distance from the edge on the first board and the distance from the edge in the last one. I know the perspective is different but you can judge by measuring the length of the number to the space ratio. The original has enough space to fit the whole '301' number before the digit '3'. The one at 5:28 has barely enough to fit just one digit.
