Sadly, there are a number of Americans who have been conned into believe that trees are non-renewable. As a result the state only licenses a few areas for logging; many are very, very remote. Interestingly, most of the trees logged today were planted by loggers and will be planted again.
Great Video! My father used to work for the Ericsson Air Crane Inc. back in the mid 1990's. Would you happen to have any video of a team on the ground working with Chokers? My father worked rolling up Chokers for the Crane in Oregon.
many of these cutblocks (the areas they log) are tens to hundreds of km's from the nearest road. they are also on very steep hillsides. it's often cheaper, easier, and less environmentally damaging to fly the logs out, rather than building roads everywhere.
they do it to cut down on environmental damage. and btw it cost a lot less to fly the helos up there than it does to cut through the forest and make roads thru the mountains for trucks. lol
@gandb21 Thats why they use Helicopters to log all over BC, oh right, they don't. Helicopters are far more expensive than building roads. They use them around the Islands because of the steep terrain and mainly because there is no access to roads, it is often the ONLY way to log there.
it is profitable because the trees they cut are worth around 1,000 a piece, so three trees could be making around 3000$ mabey more depending on the quality and length of wood.
Man thats the way forward in logging! How many tonne a day do you pull with a machine like that? Lmfao at the bushman at the start so true they are mad as!! If we're lucky we might get the 'toyota hilux' to the falling face,Any problems sending lunch up on 'the gear'?
Man that would have been so great at the end of that video if the chopper would have fell on that guy and killed him. It would have been a perfect video then. They could have named the video "Attack of the Killer trees" or " Trees take revenge". It's about time this earth gave back what we have raped from it for thousands of years. I guess that's part of the reason we have global warming and the ice caps are melting.

Love the video - thanks for sharing. Like others others I find it hard to believe heli logging is profitable however it must be otherwise planet raping corporations wouldn't do it. Don't trees take carbon dioxide from the air to produce oxygen? Wonder what we're going to breath when we finally get all the trees cut down?
Well until we stop the need to live in houses, or use furniture or wipe our asses with toilet paper, there will always be a high demand for wood and paper products.
You will be pleased to know that about half of the planets oxygen supply comes from Phytoplankton in the ocean and the other half from trees, shrubs, grass and other plants. Not just trees on vancouver island ;)
Trees are actually one of the least efficient ones. Replacing trees with fast-growing grasses would pull more carbon from the atmosphere and release more oxygen.
So the "green" argument against logging is just an emotional one. It's really about aesthetics, etc.
wow, awesome video. I'm taking Aircraft Maintenance Engineering right now, and i'm hoping to get my CPL and to fly a Bell 206 someday. I know it's an A Star, but still. Awesome footage.
HEY ALL IM FROM AUSTRALIA AND WE HAV NOTHING LIKE THIS IN AUSTRALIA WE ONLY HAV HAVETERS AND SKIDDERS DOZERS EXCAVATORS WIT BEAKS ON THEM (GRAB) IM ONLY A 15 YEAR OLD BOY AND IVE BEEN AROUND TRUCkS AND MACHEINS SINCE I WAS BORN AND I LOVE IT I HAV MI OWN CAHISAW ITS A HUSKY 395cc SAW
One hell of a grapple skidder! I do C-T-L in the great lakes region (Northwestern Wisconsin, USA) so I have never been able to see this type of operation first hand. This is just freakin amazing to watch! Can I get a Ride-a-long? :)
Pretty cool. I see alot of this kind of operation on Vancouver island. I just want to say that it is an A-Star and not a 206 as mentioned. I have flown lots with Westcoast helicopters (Port McNeill), that's who the operator of the first chopper with the crew in it. A-Star kicks the 206 anyday.
Man mike nasby will never change him and his two brothers bill and ray used to fall for my dad in port McNeill for ghostship log and salvage!!

Shit! No wonder it costs $3 for a 2x4 nowadays!
Surely there is a more economical way of doing this.

Man, that view sure shows how you loggers fuck up the land. But I guess we need the wood, as long as it's not being exported to China.
