aw, poor English horn, didn't quite get the attack on the first Bb (Eb) right on the money and had a few intonation issues with oboe as well but they both got it in tune pretty quickly .... nice vibrato...very warm and tasteful.
I played this as a member of the State of Ohio High School Honors Band in 1990 at the Ohiuo State University. I was playing Tenor Saxophone. This is the only musical score that has ever brought a tar to my eye. Its both emotionally and spiritually moving!
This piece of music shows the sheer genius of R. Wagner in that he could take a melody and develop it into so many wonderful expressions. P. I. Tchaikovsky was able to do the same thing. However, none could do it like the great maestro, Richard Wagner. Truly a genius with immortal talent.
The Cairo High School Band played this for Festival in 2010 they were awesome they even got a standing ovation from the judge from FAMU and they play this for warm-up he also said it was the best he has ever heard a high school band play it my son plays the bassoon they also played Hands Across the Sea and Songs of Sailors and the Sea
Wow. This song is beautiful! My high school played this, this past year. Great piece. Brings tears to my eyes. So hard to get intination down but it's well worth the work!
This song is amazing. I just played the first clarinet part at a clinic this weekend. I sat second chair, so I had the duet at the beginning. (Or 2nd solo, whatever). The song is just beautiful! All 4 first clarinets managed to tune that nastily high Gb in the middle section. :)
i played 1st trombone on this my junior year of high school. had to cover a bassoon part at the beginning and a few measures of a baritone part. but not french horn. i wish i could have played the horn part though
Beautiful. I played the first horn part at Governor's School this summer and loved this piece, even the held high Bflat. :D This is anamazing blend and balance.Well done.
The Hibriten High School Band from Lenoir, NC played Elsa's in the 1975 NC Band Festival and received Superior 1, 1+ and 1+++ from the 3 judges, The whole auditorium gave a standing ovation led by the judges. I've never seen judges give a standing ovation before.
Well I saw it on a TV movie called Hitler: Rise of evil. Hitler was a massive fan of Wagner and an associate of his plays it on the piano. It is actually on youtube if you search.
The Texas All State Band played this. Also, my school's Wind Ensemble is performing this piece. I think it's really beautiful. I play Bass Sax for this one. Playing the endless low Cs at the end of the piece is like death but when we all get into the piece, it's an awesome feeling.
i've played this song with 2 different bands. one with only 2 trombone players, and anyone that knows this song and is a trombone player when that E comes(atleast i think it was an E its been a while) you better be prepared to let it all come out. the second time i played this piece there was 7 trombone players. now that was fun. this is one of my favorite songs to play other than the like 36 measures of rest at the beginning. lol
its more like 64 measures of rest at the beginning. and its and F at the end. but youre right. anyone whos played the trombone part knows. this song is not for the weak. lol.
That bassoon part was a killer. We had 6 bassoons and having to tune that perfectly was terrible. haha. And the register (1st bassoon) that I was in wasn't the most friendly at times. Beautiful piece, though!
I had the honor of directing the "last part" of Elsa's at Paul Tyson almost 40 years ago. I still remember Mr. Perot's admonition to not rush it, especially the "bom-bom-bom-bom" of the lower insruments . . .
I play oboe. I was 2 chairs away from being in Wind Ensemble.ugh.lol. thats my favorite classic piece, and i usally dont like contemporary music, but morning star overture is my new favorite contemporary one...

too slow!

@chunkyboy32986
It's supposed to be slow. This is a perfect tempo for it. Much faster and it loses the emotional build up.

This was a great recording- I was in the Baylor Wind Ensemble years ago.
The best recording I've heard is from the Lake Highlands High School Band in Dallas from the 70's under Eddie Green.
Thanks for sharing this!

Mr. Green is amazing. I bet they had a good recording back then. :)
